Seeking donations for Kidney Foundation

I am a 32-year-old resident of Oakwood. My husband and I relocated here from Baltimore, Maryland about four years ago, and instantly fell in love with the neighborhood and the kindness of its residents. I have been a life-long Type I diabetic and have recently succumbed to kidney failure as a result. I began dialysis back in February and was immediately put on the national list for a kidney transplant. In April, I lost a close family friend to kidney disease as well. It was not my health, but rather his death, that spurred me into action. The moment I found out about his passing, I signed myself up to be captain for Team Schnitt at this year’s National Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Walk here in Dayton. I have never done anything like this in my life. I know, I’m crazy, right? Obviously the National Kidney Foundation is extremely important to me.

I realize times are tough, but kidney disease is not going away anytime soon. As a walker, it is my job to get donations, but as a Team Captain, it is just as important to set an example for the rest of my team that we can, in fact raise some money in these difficult times. I am asking you to help by supporting my fundraising efforts with a donation. Would you please find it in your heart to help me in reaching my goal to raise $1,000 for this fantastic organization? Even if everyone contributed only $1, it would go a long way in reaching this goal. Your tax-deductible gift will make a difference in the lives of many and it is faster and easier than ever to support this great cause. You can make your donation online by simply going to http://walk.kidney.org/site/TR?fr_id=1530&pg=pfind. Or, you can mail or drop off a check, made out to the National Kidney Foundation, at the address below.

The National Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Walks are designed to help people understand the need for early detection of kidney disease. In addition to raising funds for research and help for patients and their families, the Kidney Walk is a great way to bring the community together! 26 million people have chronic kidney disease and another 20 million are at risk, and do not even realize it. The NKF’s Kidney Walk presents an occasion for dialysis patients, organ transplant recipients, donor families, living donors, medical communities, and the general public to celebrate life and support the Foundation’s mission.

Any amount, great or small, helps in the fight. I greatly appreciate your support and you can track my progress at the website above. Please pass this on to anyone you know who would be interested in helping. This year’s National Kidney Foundation’s Dayton Kidney Walk will be on Oct.18, 2009 at Wegerzyn Garden MetroPark. Feel free to come out and join us or even just cheer us on! Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m. Log on to http://walk.kidney.org for more information. If you would be interested in joining Team Schnitt in the Walk, please contact me at jlschnitt@gmail.com.

Sincerely,

Janet Schnittger
