Raymond Loftus Bair, age 80, of Oakwood, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at Kettering Memorial Hospital. Ray was born April 22, 1925, the son of Edwin Scott and Inez Janet (nee Loftus) Bair. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Ray graduated in 1950 with a B.A. from Oberlin College. In 1962, Ray received a Fullbright Scholarship at Dartmouth College to study in Russia. He received his Master’s Degree in Education from Wright State University. Mr. Bair taught for over 30 years at Oakwood High School. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Prudence Jane Bair (nee Harwood); children, Eric Loftus (Summer) Bair of Miamisburg, OH, Edward Wallace (Linda) of Atlanta, GA, Elizabeth Jane (Mark) Cornillie of Grosse Pointe Park, MI, and Richard Curtis (Ann) Bair of Columbus, OH; brothers, Dean Edwin Bair of Alstead, NH and Robert Alan (Martha) Bair of Fresno, CA; 10 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild. Ray was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Donn Eugene Bair. Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 8 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3940 Kettering Blvd. Interment in David’s Cemetary. Col. Mark G. Treat USAF (Ret.) and Professor Emeritus, Sinclair Community College; age 87, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2005. Born 21 December 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Kent State University in 1940. Enlisted in the Flying Cadets, U.S. Army Air Corps in December, 1940. Graduated from Brooks Field, San Antonio, TX, as a pilot and commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in August, 1941. Married Janette Heath on October 11, 1941, described by Mark as “the best thing that ever happened to him.” Mark served in combat, flying Martin B-26s in the Southwest Pacific during World War II, and Douglas B-26s in Korea during and after the Korean War. Mark graduated with an MBA from the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright Patterson AFB in 1958. Retired from WPAFB with 29 years of service in 1969. Mark taught business and aviation courses at Sinclair Community College from 1970-1994. Served as a representative of Messerschmitt-Boelkow-Blohm (MBB) in the Dayton area from 1973-1986. He was Past President of the Virginia Hollinger Tennis Club; member of the Order of the Daedalians (Military Pilots); member and former Trustee and Elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church; Member of the Dayton Country Club. Mark was preceded in death by his parents Mark E. and Adele M. Treat, and his sister, Adele Nicolai. Survived by Janette, his wife of almost 64 years; Daughter Janette Ann (and husband Max) Cockerill of Oakwood; son William Mark (and wife Jomarie Alano) Treat of Warrenton, VA; and son Kim B. (and wife Kathleen) Treat of Kensington, MD; and three grandchildren, Curtis and Amy Cockerill and Elizabeth Treat. Memorial Services were held Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at Routsong Funeral Home, 6 Oakwood Avenue, Oakwood. Lois T. Geis, age 83, of Oakwood, passed away Friday, September 2, 2005. Lois was a member of Church of the Holy Angels.  She attended the University of Dayton. Lois was the owner of The Clothes Loft in Oakwood, retiring after 25 years. She was a volunteer for the Little Exchange in Oakwood and was on the associate board for Wegerzyn Garden Center.  Lois was a member of Dayton Country Club and was an avid golfer.  Preceded in death by her parents, George and Gertrude Geis; sister, Rita Richards. Survived by her cousin, Lillian Reiling, of FL; one niece and two nephews, all of Philadelphia; long-time friend, Rosalie Hall; and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2005, at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering.  Burial in Calvary Cemetery.  Family will receive friends from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to, Humane Society of Greater Dayton, 1661 Nicholas Rd. H. Clay Messenger, Jr., M.D., age 86, of Oakwood, a retired orthopedic surgeon, died August 9 at Miami Valley Hospital. Dr. Messenger was born May 14, 1919 to Dr. Harold Clay and Nell Fairbanks Messenger of Xenia, Ohio. He was the grandson of Dr. and Mrs. A. C. Messenger also of Xenia. He graduated from Xenia Central High School in 1937, where he played varsity basketball under the late Tom Blackburn. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1941 and the University of Rochester Medical School in 1944. After completing his internship at Duke University Hospital in 1945, he went on active duty for two years in the US Navy as a Lieutenant at Oakland and Philadelphia Naval Hospitals, and in 1945, in the Philippines. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. In 1951, he established private practice in Dayton. Dr. Messenger was on the staff at Miami Valley Hospital for 35 years and was also affiliated with Good Samaritan and Kettering Hospitals. He was on the staff at Barney Convalescent Hospital (now The Children’s Medical Center of Dayton). He held regular children’s clinics for the better part of his career. After retiring in 1986, he was a consultant to MVH’s MedWork until 2001. Dr. Messenger was a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a member of Dayton, Tri-State, and Mid-American Orthopedic Societies. He was an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at Wright State University Medical School. In 1994, he received a Certificate of Merit from the Ohio State Medical Association commemorating 50 years of medical practice. He held volunteer positions on the Board of Goodwill Industries of Dayton and the Canterbury Court Episcopal Retirement Homes. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. During retirement, he was a clarinetist with the Kettering Civic Band. In addition to his parents, Dr. Messenger was preceded in death by his son-in-law Robert S. Tolles, Jr., of Oakwood. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Myra Maben Messenger and their three children: Margaret M. Messenger, of Alexandria, VA; Joan M. Tolles, of Oakwood; Harold C. (“Terry”) Messenger III, of Alexandria, VA, and daughter-in-law Laura Karl Messenger; grandchildren Sarah, Rebecca, and James Tolles, Christina and Alicia Messenger; and brother Richard Messenger of Bethany Lutheran Village. Private burial will be at Woodland Cemetery in Xenia on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Miami Valley Hospital Foundation, 31 Wyoming St., Dayton, OH 45409, or the charity of your choice. Betty Ann Breidenbach, age 76, of Oakwood passed away Friday, July 8, 2005 at Walnut Creek Nursing Center, Kettering following a short illness. Betty was born in Dayton, OH, graduated from Oakwood High School and then attended Monticello College in Alton, IL and Ohio State University, majoring in Fine Arts. She was a lifelong resident of Oakwood, a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the Dayton Junior League, Oakwood Garden Club, Delta Gamma Sorority and Co-founder of Bettmaar Artwear Inc. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Henry (Hank) L. Breidenbach; parents, Fred C. & Rose M. (Mantia) Geiler; sister and brother-in-law, Katharine G. (Geiler) & Frederic L. Rieger and aunt, Katherine Ross. She is survived by her son, Jeff & Nancy Breidenbach of Oakwood; daughter, Amy & Cris Johnston of Indianapolis, IN; 5 grandchildren, Megan, Molly & Max Breidenbach and Rick & Ben Johnston; sisters and brothers-in-law, Eleanor Nelson of Virginia & Conrad Nelson of Minneapolis, MN, and Suzanne & Robert Mills of Solon, OH and many nieces & nephews. A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 18, 2005 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 33 W. Dixon Ave., Oakwood, with Rev. Jack Koepke officiating. Family will receive friends Wednesday, August 17, from 6-8 p.m. at the Routsong Funeral Home, 6 Oakwood Ave., at Irving and prior to the memorial service Thursday, August 18, 2005 from 10-11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 33 W. Dixon Ave., Oakwood. Private family burial. The family would like to extend special thanks to, the entire staff of the Suites at Walnut Creek & Walnut Creek Nursing Center, and Hospice of Dayton for their loving care.
