Oakwood keeper senior Jonathan
Green made 12 saves to secure a shutout against Valley
View.
Oakwood 1, Valley View 0
The Oakwood boys’ soccer
team hosted their third S.W.B.L. game against the Valley
View Spartans on Thursday (9/8). The Jacks charged right
off the opening kick but then had trouble maintaining
midfield control for most of the first half. The faster
Spartans applied steady pressure on the Jacks with most
of the play taking place in Oakwood’s half of the
field.
The Jack’s offense consisted mainly of counter-attacks
with little semblance of ball control or a short passing
game. Oakwood finally scored when the Spartan defense was
pushed up and junior midfielder Jessie Sellers chipped a
ball up over the line of Valley View defenders. Junior forward
Scott Casebere beat his defender and shot the ball past
the charging Spartan keeper
into the net at 24:48. Valley View took 13 shots and Oakwood
shot 11 times during this half. The Jacks were able to hold
this lead into halftime.
The Spartans kept up the pressure
throughout the second half and fired 14 shots. Oakwood keeper
senior Jonathan Green maintained the shut out, making a
total of 12 saves in this contest. The Jacks managed to
take 10 shots during the second half.
Senior captain Chris Luther
(defender), senior Joey Payne (midfielder), and junior
forward Addison Wille demonstrated exceptional play and
hustle for the Jacks throughout the game. Oakwood improved
to 4-1-1 (2-1 S.W.B.L.). They will next play at home versus
Chaminade-Julienne on Saturday, 10 September.

Chaminade
Julienne (C-J) wasted no time scoring their first goal
at 3:36 into their game against Oakwood’s men’s
soccer team on Saturday afternoon, (9/10). Senior Zach
Willis crossed the ball to sophomore Jordan Bighle who
put it past senior keeper Jonathan Green. Oakwood responded
at 6:14 when senior captain sweeper Justin Quenneville
lofted a direct kick to junior striker Addison Wille who
beat the defense and shot the ball into the net over the
charging Eagle’s goalie, junior Aaron Scheid. C-J
took 15 shots the first half compared to nine by the Jacks.
The second half brought another
16 shots from the Eagles. C-J scored at 5:07 when senior
Mark Trick kicked the ball into the far corner following
a defensive save by sweeper Quenneville. Eagle’s
striker Beighle then scored
at 19:14 off of a rebounded ball. Oakwood fought back
with junior Matt Vail knocking a rebounded throw-in ball
(from junior midfielder Jessie Sellers) into far post.
Unfortunately, this was the final goal of the match, resulting
unfavorably for the Jacks.
Sorely missed were previously injured
junior defender Josh Curley and sophomore defender John
Harman (who was kicked in the head on a dangerous play at
the game’s start and was therefore unable to play
the rest of the game). Oakwood only managed eight
shots the second half. Keeper Green made nine saves and
there were two additional defensive saves by Vail and senior
midfielder Joey Payne. Oakwood falls to 4-2-1.
The
varsity volleyball team is off to a dynamic start commanding
a confident 7-1 record in a busy two week schedule that
left powerhouse Waynesville licking their wounds Thursday
night in the pit. The Fabulous Eight, a young team of sophomores
and juniors, with only two returning varsity players after
graduating seven seniors, are led by junior Captains Katie
Fritz (outside hitter) and Lauren Enns (setter),with help
from juniors Elysse Carpenter (middle) Anne Murphy (outside
hitter) and Jen Wuebker (defensive specialist). Sophomores
Lili Hartzell (outside hitter), Alisa Kessler (middle) and
Meredith Baer (defensive specialist) complete the impressive
squad.

Jills Varsity Volleyball team is having
great season.
The Jills took charge at the start
with early wins against Northmont and Springboro, followed
by their only defeat this year against Arcanum in a tight
match. They then rebounded
to deliver incapacitating blows to Valleyview, Brookville,
and Stebbins The domination continued with a crushing
defeat to Stebbins in three games leaving coaches ‘round
town scratching their heads and SWBL opponents taking note,
as they awed fans with their impressive teamwork. Next,
they defeated Waynesville in an exciting four game match
that confirmed with authority that this indeed
is a team to be reckoned with. Area rankings give
the Jills, an eighth place against Division II competition
and a 2-0 SWBL record. The volleyballers host archrival
Bellbrook on Tuesday in the pit at 6:30 p.m., followed by
trips to Valleyview and Clinton Massie on Thursday and Saturday.
Come support this impressive
team as the volleyball tradition at Oakwood continues.
The Oakwood Lumberjacks JV football
team ran its record to 2 - 1 with a 26 - 14 home win over
the Carlisle Indians on Saturday, Sept. 10.
The Jacks were led by game captains
Brett Griffin, Sam Payne and Bob Holmes. The balanced
Jack offensive attack was led by big play receiver Drew
Sawyer, who hauled in five receptions for 120 yards, including
a touchdown and a two-point conversion.
Rasheed Ritter led the running game
with 114 yards on 19 carries, with one touchdown run.
Quarterbacks Andrew Carpenter and Robby Sherk had short
touchdown runs to complete the scoring for Oakwood. The
offensive line, with starters Nick Zunich, Matt Suits, Joey
Lefforge, Bill Dresher, and Sam Payne, and back-ups Jason
Elking and Andrew Ely, consistently opened big holes and
provided solid pass protection.
On defense, the opportunistic
Lumberjacks forced four turnovers
for the second week in a row. Andrew Carpenter intercepted
two passes for the second consecutive week, while Max
Olavarria and Alex Byrd each recovered
Carlisle fumbles. Mark Brown, Nathan Thomas, Olavarria,
Carpenter and Nolan Kronbergs were the leading tacklers
for the defense. Oakwood will try to extend its winning
streak when they travel to Brookville for a 10 a.m. game
next Saturday.
A couple Friday
nights ago football game spectators saw the “unveiling”
of the new Oakwood Lumberjack mascot, a new addition which
was purchased with funds provided by the Student Council,
with help from the Oakwood High School PTO and the Varsity
O. “Plans to introduce a mascot were started by
last year’s student council as a final gift from
the Class of 2005,” said current Student Council
President Annie Walworth. This year’s student council
completed the project.
Inside the
tough-looking mascot pictured above is OHS junior Brad
Thomas, who was pressed into service with not much coaxing;
“It sounded like a lot of fun,” he said. According
to Walworth, two or three permanent mascot “insiders”
will be selected by a method yet to be determined; and
a contest will be held to give Mr. Lumberjack a permanent
name.
Welcome Mr.
Lumberjack. Help chop, chop the competition!
