Jills win Columbus matches

In Saturday’s Reserve Field Hockey game against Worthington (Columbus) Kilbourne, Oakwood won 1-0! The Varsity Field Hockey team also beat Columbus School for Girls 2-1 also on Saturday.

Miscues key to Jacks defeat by Bellbrook

Jacks 7, Eagles 40

Rain fell on the crowd attending Friday’s match-up between the Oakwood Lumberjacks and the Bellbrook Eagles at David Holmes Field.  The weather was an obvious detriment to the Jacks and the run-and-shoot offense.  Poor footing, dropped passes and turnovers allowed Bellbrook to score on their first three offensive plays.  Mysteriously, no rain fell in Oakwood.

The Lumberjacks received the opening kick and went three and out.  Punter Will Merritt was unable to field the snap and Bellbrook recovered the ball on their three yard line.  The Birds scored on the next play and the Jacks were down 7 – 0.  Oakwood quarterback AJ Lewis completed a short pass, but the receiver fumbled.  Bellbrook took over on their 21 yard line.  The Eagles tossed a pass into the corner for another score and led 14 – 0.

The Jacks had the ball on their 20, following the kick off.  Sam Schubert found an opening in the middle for a 15 yard gain.  A penalty and broken plays forced another punting situation.  Merritt’s kick gave Bellbrook the ball on their 38.  The Eagles completed a pass over the middle and a 62 yard score.  Bellbrook’s three offensive plays gave 21 - 0 Bellbrook lead before the first quarter ended.  Bellbrook upped their lead to 33–0 with two field goals and a 47 yard run.  Redemption came only on a missed extra point by highly regarded Bellbrook kicker, Joe Hodapp.

Oakwood kicked off to start the 2nd half.  Bellbrook took over on their 35 following Scott Casebere’s squib kick.  Bellbrook did it again.  A 65 yard touchdown run gave Bellbrook a 40–0 lead.  Five one play scoring drives for the Eagles.  Oakwood couldn’t recover and fell to the Eagles, 40–7.  The lone Oakwood score came on Zach Meadows 38 yard fumble return.  Scott Casebere tacked on the extra point.

While suffering in defeat, the Lumberjacks had some highlights.  Jacob Bubb and Jeremy Reed each recovered fumbles.  John Diefenderfer, Alex Botello, Chris Hardy and Will Merritt all caught passes from AJ Lewis.  Sam Schubert ran the ball well behind Michael Cobb, Aaron Huber, Sam Payne, Michael Curry, Jake Mays and Brian Beck.  Zach Smith collected another interception, his fifth on the year.

Zach Smith makes his sixth interception of the year.

Oakwood, now 4 – 3 on the year, plays Milton-Union at Mack Hummon Stadium on Friday.  The conference match-up will mean big computer points for the winner.  The 6 - 1 Bulldogs are fresh off a 54 – 21 victory over league nemesis, Valley View.  The game is also Homecoming and festivities begin Wednesday.  Go Jacks!

Eagles claw Jacks 36-6

The Oakwood Lumberjacks JV football team lost to the Division 2 power Bellbrook Golden Eagles 36-6 at home on Saturday, Oct. 8. The game was eerily reminiscent of the varsity game on Friday night, with early Jacks turnovers digging a deep hole from which they could not escape. The Lumberjacks fought hard on defense, led by Bob Holmes and Tony Lamb with seven total tackles a piece. Nathan Thomas and Joey Lefforge chipped in with six stops each. Max Olavarria, Nolan Kronbergs, Andy Ely and Aaron Sparks also were involved in five tackles each. On his birthday, Ted Buffington led the defense with three unassisted tackles. Ely and Robby Sherk recovered Bellbrook fumbles, while Sparks contributed a solo quarterback sack. Holmes also sacked the Eagle quarterback, with help from Kevin Harrell and Ely.

The Lumberjacks offense scored when quarterback Andrew Carpenter connected with Drew Sawyer on a five yard touchdown pass. Sherk led Oakwood with 46 passing yards, and added 30 yards on the ground. Sawyer and Lamb led the Jacks receivers with two catches a piece. Jesse Kell added 33 receiving yards with a acrobatic catch and run. Rasheed Ritter gained 26 yards on the ground. The loss dropped Oakwood’s record to 3-4, with two games left to go. Oakwood looks to get back on the winning track when it travels to Milton-Union next Saturday morning.

Jacks take sting out of Bees

At Mack Hummon Stadium last Thursday, the Oakwood junior varsity soccer team hosted the Bethel Bees. The first half opened with the Jacks on the attack with Jon Liston, pictured far right, arching one in for a 1-0 Oakwood lead. A few minutes later Liston shot in his second goal and the Jacks led 2-0 in the half. Kyle Kissock scored the last gosl in the second half for a 3-0 Jacks victory.
