Seman – Donaruma

Eileen Patricia Seman, daughter of Gail S. Earman of Kettering and the late Paul I. Seman, and John Joseph Donaruma, son of Edith and Joseph Donaruma of Brockton, MA were married October 16, 2005 at the Wequassett Inn Resort in Chatham, MA.

The bride graduated from Oakwood High School and Boston University in addition to graduating from Georgetown University Law Center-JD. She is associate director of alumni relations at Simmons College in Boston, MA.

The groom graduated from UMass-Amherst. He is a portfolio analyst at the financial firm of Thomas Weisel Partners in Boston, MA.

Mrs. Julia Diaz of Washington, D.C. attended as Matron of Honor. The Best Man was Steven Jaffe of Camarillo, CA. Mr. Steven Donaruma and Mr. James Donaruma, brothers of the groom, served as ushers. The bride was given in marriage by her brothers, Paul F. Seman of Kettering, OH and Matthew J. Seman of Bowling Green, OH.

The couple honeymooned in St. Kitts and Nevis. They will maintain two residences, one in Brookline, MA and one at The Ridge Club in Sandwich, MA.

 


Burke – Villen

Sarah Jane Burke, daughter of Mrs. Maureen Burke of Oakwood, and Anne and Aaron Burke of Vandalia was married on August 21 to Mats Bertil Villen, son of Bo and Hjorjis, Rattwik, Sweden at Cedergrenska Tornet in Stocksund, Sweden.

Sarah, formerly the Assitant Director of Development for the American Jewish Committee, Washington D.C. Chapter, now studies Swedish at the Folkunivesitetet in Stockholm. Sarah is a graduate of Oakwood High School.

Mats is a Senior Consultant for ITPS (Internet Telecom Payment Solutions) of Stockholm. The couple reside in Taby, Sweden, a suburb of Stockholm.

 


Deck named President & CEO of Munson Healthcare

K. Douglas Deck has been named the next President and Chief Executive Officer of Munson Healthcare, northern Michigan’s largest health care system.  Deck, who currently serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Samaritan Health Partners, the parent organization of Good Samaritan Hospital, will assume the position in January after the retirement of Munson’s current President and CEO John Rockwood.

Deck, 56, served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Samaritan Health Partners and Good Samaritan Hospital for more than 17 years.  Munson Healthcare’s flagship hospital, Munson Medical Center, is a regional referral hospital in Traverse City, Michigan and is repeatedly named in the Top 100 Hospitals in the country.

“This is a tremendous career opportunity for Doug and while we are losing his valued expertise, we know that Munson Healthcare recognizes and appreciates the leadership they are gaining,” said Tom Breitenbach, President and Chief Executive Officer of Premier Health Partners.  

James Pancoast, President and Chief Executive Officer of Good Samaritan Hospital, will maintain his current responsibilities and in addition has been named President and Chief Executive Officer of Samaritan Health Partners.

As President and CEO of Good Samaritan Hospital and Samaritan Health Partners since 1987, Deck’s career highlights include being instrumental in bringing together Premier Health Partners in 1995, the largest health system in the Dayton region.  Under his strategic and operational leadership, Deck led the development of Samaritan North Health Center, the region’s largest and most comprehensive full service ambulatory campus.  Other accomplishments include creating the physician network Samaritan Family Care, the joint venture ambulatory surgery center Samaritan North Surgery Center, and the Samaritan Homeless Clinic, Dayton’s only homeless healthcare clinic.  Deck is actively involved in the Dayton community and has served on many boards including Key Bank, the Dayton Chamber of Commerce, and the Dayton Ballet.

“Doug has championed patient centered care in all our services.  He has contributed to the wider Dayton community through service on many non-profits boards, and was a leader in ensuring our community’s high quality healthcare system.  We wish him well in his work with Munson Healthcare,” said Dr. Ned Sifferlen, Chairman of Good Samaritan Hospital’s Board of Trustees.

Two named to OSEF Board of Trustees

The Oakwood Schools Education Foundation is pleased to announce the addition of two new members to the Board of Trustees. The new trustees are: Janine Z. McQuillan and David Williams. Janine is Vice President and Manager of Private Banking at U.S. Bank.  She is an Oakwood alumna, resident and active community volunteer.  Janine and her husband Tim, have one child attending Harman Elementary and a preschooler.

David Williams is Vice President of Development Services for Hutchins Commercial Realty and a Principal in Hutchins Construction Company. He is also a Partner in the Webster Station Development Group who developed the Cannery and the 2nd Street Public Market in downtown Dayton. David is an active Oakwood alumnus and resides in Oakwood with his wife Susan, and two children.

Little Exchange Open House grosses $28,000

Chair Marilyn Fowler of Washington Township and Co-Chair Lois Maher of Oakwood, announce a successful sales day at this year’s Holiday Open House held on Sunday, November 6.  The Holiday Open House was held from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and in those six hours, The Little Exchange had gross receipts of more than $28,000.  The Little Exchange is located at 45 Park Avenue (off Route 48 South/Far Hills Avenue) in Oakwood and donates its proceeds to The Children’s Medical Center.  The size of The Little Exchange’s annual donation to The Children’s Medical Center largely depends on the success of the holiday shopping season.

According to Chair Marilyn Fowler, “Hundreds of volunteers donate thousands of hours to operate The Little Exchange.  The success of the Holiday Open House serves as the kick-off to The Little Exchange’s holiday shopping season.”  Selections of distinctive ornaments and decorations, unique children’s apparel for infants to boys and girls size 4T, holiday merchandise, hostess gifts and great presents for everyone on the gift list are featured.  Chair Marilyn Fowler added, “We are so pleased with the sales results of the Holiday Open House because it represents so much hard work by so many volunteers.  At The Little Exchange, you can shop for unique fine gifts to celebrate the important occasions and relationships in your lives and do something charitable at the same time.”

In its fifty-five years in business, The Little Exchange has donated more than $1.275 million to The Children’s Medical Center.  Last June, The Little Exchange donated $40,000 to The Children’s Medical Center as part of its three-year pledge of $125,000 to fund The Family Resource Center at the hospital.  The Family Resource Center provides information for patients and their families regarding symptoms, treatments, etc. using printed materials, videos and internet access.

The Little Exchange is open on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  For more information or to find out more about volunteering at The Little Exchange, call 299-1561.


MDA seeking summer camp volunteers

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is searching for summer camp volunteers who are looking for a rewarding and memorable experience. Volunteer counselors are needed to help young people with neuromuscular diseases enjoy a fun-filled, weeklong MDA summer camp located in Clarksville, Ohio.

Volunteer counselors must be at least 16 years old and able to lift
and care for a young person between the ages of 6 and 21. Each counselor becomes a companion to a camper with a neuromuscular disease. Counselors help their campers with daily activities such as eating, bathing and dressing, and in recreational activities such as arts and crafts, swimming and horseback riding. Counselors are provided free room and meals during their stay.
