, age 80, of Bellbrook, formerly of Oakwood, passed away Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005. Al was a retired Mechanical Contracting Manager, past president of ASHRAE. A graduate of the University of Dayton, an avid booster and a member of Hithergreen Senior Center. He was also a veteran, POW and Purple Heart recipient of WWI and was a member of the Trailblazers Company D 275th Infantry. Fraley, a member of the Oakwood High School Class of 1944, participated in a forum at the school library in 2004. As part of their 60th reunion, Al and Cy Laughter met with a group of students and recorded interviews about their
WWI experiences. Al was drafted in the spring of his senior year and didn’t participate in the graduation exercises. He was sent to Europe, where he became a prisoner of war until the German surrender a year later. He was preceded in death by his wife Gloria S. in 1994. Al is survived by two daughters, Sandra Fraley-Ochin and her husband Richard of FL., Cynthi Fraley of Bellbrook; a son and his wife, Steve and Mary Jo Fraley of Kettering; two grandchildren, Brian Fraley and his wife Jill, Jennifer and her husband Brian Heckman; Three great-grandchildren, Jaret and Trevor Fraley and Camryn Hogue. , age 78, of Oakwood, formerly of Centerville, OH, passed away Saturday, November 19, 2005. Joe was a current member of Holy Angels Catholic Church and was formerly a longtime member of The Church of the Incarnation. In 1950 he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a BBA in Accounting and was a member of Phi Kappa Fraternity and the Newman Club. Joe was a member of Hithergreen Senior Center, and the Knights of Columbus. He retired after 32 years as a Pension Administrator and Assistant Corporate Secretary from Dayco. Joe was preceded in death in 1960 by his first wife, Anna Mae Ryan (nee Ricke), and in 1995 by his second wife, Anita Ryan (nee LeTang); children, Ricky and Julie in 1960, and sister, Dorothy Lonergan in 2004. , age 65, of Oakwood, passed away Monday, Nov. 7, 2005. Carl retired as a Tenured Professor of Organizational Behavior from Kettering University (formerly GMI), Flint, MI., in 2000, having served there since 1986. From 1978-1986, Carl was with the NCR Corp., Dayton, OH, last serving as Director of Training/Development, Engineering and Manufacturing Group, and was functionally responsible for the educational programs at 16 U.S. manufacturing and 8 international locations of NCR. From 1976-1978 he served as the Executive Director of Personnel Affairs, University of Miami, FL. From 1973-76, he served as an Assistant Professor, GMI and consulted full-time with General Motors, Corporate, Detroit, MI in developing performance appraisal systems implemented in all 32 divisions of GM. Additionally, from 1970-1976 he served as a Consultant of Psychological Assessments and Test Administration for the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation (BVR), primarily in Columbus, OH and Flint, MI. From 1963-1973, he was with the Goodyear Corp., Akron, OH in Human Factors Engineering, and as a lab technician; received his MA and Ph.D in Psychology from the University of Akron, OH, and authored or co-authored 25 professional journal published submissions. Carl graduated from Tallmadge HS, outside of Akron, OH in 1958. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard E. and Mary Virginia (Teel) Thornton of Akron, OH. Carl is survived by his wife of 42 years, Janice Elaine (Mattingly/Baranchik) Thornton; 3 children, Matthew C., Miriam (Mimi) C. and Maria E., all of Dayton, OH area. 4 grandchildren, Maiya, Connor, Kataryn, and Jericho; and a sister Judy and husband Michael Frahlich of Simpsonville, SC. His final resting place will be at Woodland Cemetary Mausoleum, Dayton, OH. There will be a private family memorial at a later date. He was a Real Estate Broker and Appraiser at Lake of the Ozarks, MO and a Licensed Securities Broker. Don was on the Board of Directors of the Miami Valley Hunt & Polo Club. , age 82, of Centerville, passed away peacefully Sunday, October 16, 2005 at the Cleveland Clinic with his daughter by his side. Beloved husband and father is survived by his wife of 55 years, Phyllis (Lewis) Gardner; one daughter Molly Farley, her husband Ken, and three grandchildren Steven, Emily, and Kevin. He is also survived by four siblings: G. Neal Gardner, Jane Ekstrom, Nancy Rogers and Jack Gardner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Elizabeth Gardner, his brother Wayne Gardner and his sister Lorraine Keim. The third of seven children, Earl Jr. was born on September 18, 1923 in Montgomery County, Indiana. Red attended Wabash College until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was selected for Officer Training, became an Ensign, and was assigned to the USS Cassin. After WWII, Earl attended DePauw University where he earned Little-All-American and All-State-Selection and set high-scoring basketball records which stood for many years. After graduating in 1948 Red played basketball for the Minneapolis Lakers, where his team won the first NBA World Championship in 1949. He received his Masters degree in Health and Physical Education from Indiana University. In 1950 Earl and Phyllis where married and settled in Dayton, Ohio. He served the students of Oakwood High School for 33 years as coach, guidance counselor, and teacher. Red has been inducted into the Sam Andrews Educational Hall of Honor, the Depauw University Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Melanie was born on April 25, 1958 in Newark, New Jersey. She was preceded in death by her mother Alma (Partyka) Mackin. She is survived by her husband of 18 years, Randall; her son Ronald Patrick Stump; her father Thomas Mackin of Bedminster NJ; her sister, Tara Hiby and her husband Eric of Houston TX; her niece Allison Hiby; her father-in-law and mother-in-law Maury and Patricia Himmelberg of Kettering OH; two sister-in-laws Leigh Ann Turner of Bellbrook OH and Susan Holt and her husband Tim and their children Justin & Kristin of Tampa FL. , She was a 1980 graduate of Smith College in Northampton MA, and a 1984 graduate of the University of Dayton School of Law and was
admitted to the Ohio Bar in the fall of 1984. She started her career as a law clerk for Judge James A. Brogan, then worked at Smith and Schnacke for several years, later with Chernesky, Heyman & Kress, and then with Thompson Hine. In 2002 she was a founding partner in the firm of Scheuer, Mackin & Breslin, with offices in Dayton, Cincinnati & Cleveland. She was board certified in the specialty area of Workers Compensation Law. , a native Daytonian, age 87, died on Oct. 5, 2005. He is survived by his wife, Harriet (nee Gerstner), one daughter, Jane and son-in-law Bradley Langdon of Lee’s Summit, MO, sisters Ocie Paul of Chicago, IL, Virginia Palmatier of Niskayuna, NY and a brother, Robert Leland, a Dayton attorney. He was preceded in death by his only son, Harry, his parents, Hazel and George Leland, a brother Gerald Leland and sister, Margaret Russell. A Purdue graduate in Electrical Engineering, Mr. Leland was first employed by Allis Chalmers Co. for three years in defense work, then served as an officer on a U.S. Navy Patrol Craft in the Pacific theater during WW II. Returning to civilian life, he assisted his entrepreneurial father as chief engineer doing much of the groundwork for developing the then-unique rotary solenoid. Among the many applications of its use was the early athletic scoreboard clock circuitry. The solenoid is still used in most automobiles, household washers and other appliances. The company was G.H. Leland Co., Inc., later becoming Ledex, Inc., and is now SAIA Burgess in Vandalia, Ohio. During 1959-1962 he worked for Systems Research Laboratories, Inc., and in 1962 he joined a family woodworking company, H. Gerstner & Sons, becoming president until retirement in 1977. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and was a longstanding (30 yr.) member of his church choir. He was a member of the Dayton Engineers Club since WW II. Mr. Leland’s ancestor, Hopestill Leland, fought in the Revolutionary War, thus Harold was made a Fellow of the Order of Founders and Patriots of America. He was a two-year volunteer instruc tor of metallurgy for the University of Dayton when they called for help and he had been a board member of the Delaware Valley Mental Health Foundation, Doylestown, PA. He was an ardent supporter of Operation Rebirth, Inc. (Dayton Christian Boarding School for would-be delinquent boys at 1638 Apple Road, St. Paris, OH 43072) and was active in free-lance research with a local MD in electro-bionic therapeutics. He has studied a book encompassing a New-Age spiritual system called “A Course in Miracles” and attempted writings for easier application of Christ’s teaching in the lives of young people. More recently, he has been a volunteer tutor at the Miami Valley Literacy Council. He was known and loved for his kindness and gentleness toward everyone he met.

He traveled for International Minerals and Chemical Corp. and Kaiser Agriculture Chemical for 37 years. Jesse also worked at Dorothy Lane Market for 10-plus years. Jesse was preceded in death by his parents; Ella and William Loar, 2 brothers; Ralph and Paul Loar and one sister, Margaret Walters. , age 88, passed away on October 5, 2005. Charles was born in Dayton, Ohio on June 23, 1917, the son of Charles S. and Florence Wayne Hayes. He attended Moraine Park School and graduated from Oakwood High School. Charles received his formal education in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati and the University of Dayton. He joined IBM Corp. in Dayton as Manager of the Service Bureau during the summer of 1939. Later, as the country was mobilizing for World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army/Air Corps. as a student weatherman in February of 1941 at Wright-Patterson Field. Charles was later chosen to attend the Weather Forecasters School at Chanute Field in Rantoul, Illinois. He graduated from the 6-month course in April, 1942 and saw service as a Forecaster at Selfridge and Bolling Fields before entering the Adjutant Generals School at Ft. Washington, Maryland in July of 1942. Charles graduated in September of 1942 and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the ADG. He served as an officer and commanded the 11th Machine Records Unit in the U.S. and Europe. After making the Normandy landings with the 1st U.S. Army, the unit continued in Europe. He served later with the 9th Army and linked up with the Russians at the Elbe River in Germany in April of 1945. Charles attained the rank of Major and was awarded the Bronze Star. Charles married Marian B. Hayes in 1942 and after her death in 1983, he married Mary Lange Hayes. Charles joined his father in 1946 at Hayes Tools in sales. He became President of the corporation in 1960 and guided its growth from a few employees to well over 100 at the time of his retirement in 1984 when his sons took over active management. Charles has been an active citizen of Dayton and involved in the following organizations: Dayton Rotary Club (President 1982-1983), President of Rotary Foundation, President Dayton Engineers Club (1971), President and founding member of the Engineers Club Foundation, Founding President of Miami Valley Health Foundation supporting Miami Valley Hospital, President of The Dayton Club, President Oakwood Athletic Boosters, Life member of The Society of Manufacturing Engineers, served on various committees of The National Industrial Distributors Association, Moraine Country Club, President Spring Run Farms Trout Club, Slagel Trout Club in Muskegon, MI, Sigma Chi Fraternity and the Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club. Charles hobbies included: model building, fly tying, rod building, reading and golf. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lange Hayes; three sons, Charles (Sherry) Stephen Hayes, Jeffrey (Emily) Wayne Hayes and Dr. Phillip (Jill) Wayne Hayes; sister, Elizabeth (Abner) Pratt; six grandchildren, Jeff (Emily), Sarah Elizabeth, Lindsey, Hannah, Curtis and Emma. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 33 W. Dixon Ave., Oakwood with Rev. John F. Koepke III officiating.
