Peggy (Margaret Ann Powers) Kronauge, of Centerville, formerly of Oakwood, devoted wife of Paul W. Kronauge Jr., married nearly 49 years, passed away on February 20, 2006. She was the beloved mother of Paul W. Kronauge III (Corrine) of Redwood City, CA; Patricia Kronauge (Jerry Gulker) of Hobe Sound, FL; Pamela Marshall of Centerville, OH; Polly Kronauge of Jackson, WY; and Penny Kronauge (John Mott) of Dayton, OH. Survived by five grandchildren who called her “Mimi”; Katerina and Anika Kronauge; Kelsey and Kirk Marshall; and Anuhealani Kronauge. She is also survived by her sisters, Jinny Berten (John) of Cincinnati, OH and Susie Heinz (Terry) of Charleston, SC. Born April 21, 1935 in Kansas City, Missouri to Mary Ellen Walker and William Francis Powers. Peggy graduated from the Summit Country Day School in Cincinnati, the University of Dayton and St. Elizabeth School of Nursing. She worked for twenty-one years at Children’s Medical Center, where she was a nursing supervisor, emergency room administrator and Asst. Vice-President of Outpatient Services. Peggy was the driving force in creating Children’s Urgent Care. She had a variety of interests which included antiques and together with her husband established “Strip-tique”. She found great delight in her friends and shared with them an occasional manhattan. Her deep and tireless devotion to genealogy revealed long held family stories and secrets, both Irish and English. She was a Daughter of the American Revolution, a Daughter of the Republic of Texas and a founder of the League of Italian Sisters, where she was known as “Theresa”. Peggy volunteered many years in the genealogy section of the Dayton-Metro Library as a transcriber for The Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild and also entered obituary information in the library’s database; in addition, after the attacks of September 11, 2001, she volunteered for covert reconnaissance missions for the CIA. She was a wise woman of quiet charm and generosity of spirit, coupled with a unique sense of humor. These combined qualities drew trust, admiration and affection from all who knew her. She died as she lived; concerned for others, finding delight and comfort in her family, and giving instructions for everyone to “always keep laughing.” A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, Feb. 25th at 11: 00AM at Holy Angels Church, 218 K St., Dayton, with Father Dan Meyer officiating.  A Celebration of her Life to follow at Routsong Funeral Home, 81 N. Main St., Centerville. Private services to be held at Calvary Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio. James J. Gleason, age 74, of Oakwood, died Sunday, February 12, 2006 at Miami Valley Hospital. He was a retired English Professor with Wright State University with 27 years of service. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his son, James A. Gleason, parents, John and Ann Gleason and brother Dan Gleason; He is sur
vived by his wife of 51 years, Ellen (Bourke) Gleason; son and daughter-in-law, John and Sylvia Gleason; daughter and sons-in-law, Mary and Tom Bartlett, Cathy and Jim Lawler, Ellen and Jim McElwain; daughter-in-law Lauren Gleason; brother and sister-in-law, Phillip and Maureen Gleason; numerous grandchildren. A Prayer Service was held Friday, Feb 17 at Meyer-Boemer & Reis Funeral Home followed by Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Burial Calvary Cemetary. Family received friends Thursday at the funeral home.

Anthony Joseph “Moon” Mantia, Passed away on February 12, 2006 at the age of 89. He served in WWII on many battlefronts. Mantia worked at Dominic’s Restaurant for several decades with numerous family members and friends. He was a resident of
Dayton until 1982. After the passing of his wife Jean, he moved to Atlanta to be closer to his son, daughter-in-law and grandsons. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Nicholas Joseph and Judy Mantia, grandsons Nicholas Anthony Mantia and Brett Dominic Mantia, all of Atlanta; his sister Francis Lyons of Dayton; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

James R. Rambo Passed away on Jan. 2, 2006. A long-time, former Oakwood resident, and a beloved husband of S. Yvonne, Jim was born July 26, 1923 to Thomas B. and Ann Dopf Rambo who lived on Hadley Avenue. He had a hard time growing up here, in a family with two brothers, and parents who were just able to make ends meet through the Depression. Many people remember the rented farmhouse at the corner of Far Hills and Peach Orchard Road, where vegetable gardens made it work for them. Jim’s work at extra jobs and good grades, with basketball and baseball interests, got him into Ohio University after graduating in 1941. But in June 1943, his R.O.T.C. unit was activated and he served in the Army Engineers until 1946. Returning to Ohio, he continued his studies on an accelerated basis, graduating from Ohio University in 1947 and Cincinnati Law School in 1949. He practiced law privately in Dayton, then served as one of the U. S. Attorneys for the Southern District of Ohio. Joining NCR’s legal staff in 1965, he rose to vice president and general counsel, and secretary of the company. He was elected to the board of directors in 1971. He retired in 1984 and after leaving Oakwood, enjoyed the community of Hanover, N. H. Two years ago he retired to Santa Barbara, Calif. Jim and Yvonne have three sons: Eric (wife Noriko and 2 children), Brad (wife Michelle and 2 children), and Todd. He is also survived by his brother Dave, OHS class of ’49. His brother, Tom, OHS class of ’46, predeceased him in 1988.

Doris R. Spicka, age 89, died peacefully on Sunday, December 18, 2005 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. She was born on March 30, 1916 in Ames, Iowa. She spent her adult life in Dayton until moving to Toledo in 2000. She was preceded in death by her parents Russell and Bernice Richardson, husband Joseph, and sister Martha. Survivors include sons James and Douglas, daughter-in-law Susan, granddaughter Rebecca, and niece Judith Skogen. In addition to being a homemaker and mother she was active in civic and community affairs. She was a member of the Charter Commission for the City of Kettering prior to its incorporation in 1954. She served on that city’s Planning Commission for five years ending as Chairman. She was an active churchwoman at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. She served on the Board of the Episcopal Retirement Homes, Inc. and chaired its Advisory Board for Canterbury Court Nursing Facility. She was a member of the initial Advisory Board for Dayton Public Radio. Throughout her life she was involved in the education al and advocacy activities of The League of Women Voters holding numerous local and statewide offices. She was also a member of the Dayton Music Club. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 33 West Dixon Ave. at 11:00 AM on Thursday February 9, 2006. Barbara Rose (“Bobbie”) Krug, age 68, of Washington Twp. passed away Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006 at her residence. Bobbie was a long time member of the Church of the Incarnation. She was a loving wife and a devoted mother and grandmother.  She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Margaret Towell. Bobbie is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Joseph P. Krug; six children: Carolyn (Paul) Landers of Liberty Twp. and their children, Stephen, Tricia and Carly; Joseph (Sherry) Krug of Springboro and their children, Joey, Megan and
Ellie; John (Carolyn) Krug of Vandalia and their children, Sarah, Annemarie, Tommy and Mark; Andrew (Nicole) Krug of Pittsburgh, PA and their children, Michelle and Lauren; Michael (Amy) Krug of Centerville; and Kimberly (Brian) Conde of Oakwood; sisters Virginia Hirsch, Josephine Cutright and Kathryn Hirsch; brother William E. James Theodore Coughlin, age 89, of Kettering, passed away on Monday Jan. 16th 2006. He was a treasured and much loved husband, father and grandfather. He was born January 6th, 1917 in Ft. Recovery, Ohio, and moved to Dayton in 1946. James resided in Oakwood until 2005. He then lived at One Lincoln Park in Kettering. James attended The Ohio State University where he was a member of the basketball team and lettered in baseball. He graduated from Ball State University, where he met his wife, Mary Elizabeth Buckley. Mr. Coughlin served in W.W.II as a captain with the 147th Combat Engineers. He landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day. James received the Jubile de la Liberte medal from France in a ceremony at Memorial Hall in 2002. Mr. Coughlin retired as a Division Head from Rikes/Federated Department Stores after 43 years. He was a member of Holy Angels Parish, and a long time member of the Dayton Country Club. James Coughlin was an inspiration to his family, and his solid character, steadfast loyalty and constant humor will be deeply and forever missed. Preceded in death by his parents, James and Theodora (Dilhoff) Coughlin; his wife of 43 years, Mary Buckley Coughlin, sisters; Mary, Mildred (Sally), Gertrude, and Anne; brothers: Edward and Tom. Survived by his daughter Deborah Coughlin Anderson (James) of Oakwood; Sons, James Theodore Coughlin Jr. of Kettering, Dr. Timothy David Coughlin (Monica) of Reno, Neveda, Robert Buckley Coughlin (Amy) of Dayton; sister Aurelia (Rela) of Hopkinton, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Genevieve Coughlin of Columbus, Ohio and Kathleen Block of Vermillion, South Dakota; brother-in-law, Henry Knapke of St. Petersburg, FL, and many nieces and nephews. James was a devoted grandfather to Jennifer Coughlin Sidley (David), Carly Noel Coughlin, Zachary Barker Coughlin, Kathryn Boyd Anderson, Margaret Timmons Anderson, Kathryn Sarah Coughlin, Mary Elizabeth Coughlin, Emily Altair Coughlin, Michael Gray, Lea Kincaid, and great grandson, Ben Kincaid. Sandra A. Ellison (Nee Lewis), age 66 passed from this earth to our Lord on January 19, 2006 after a year long battle with cancer.  She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and lifelong friend to many.  Sandy was born in Richmond, IN and moved to the St. Petersburg area in 1941.  She graduated from St. Pete High School in 1957 and was secretary of the Class of ‘57 Reunion Committee. During Sandy’s full life, she was a state-level tennis player, teaching professional, and business woman.  Her kindness and compassion for others was shown as a caregiver on the Lavender Team at the Hospice of the Florida Suncoast.  She is survived by her children Alan Livada of Dayton, OH and Dana Livada of Lenoir, NC; sister, Cheryl Lewis of Vancouver, WA; grandchildren, Alec and Maxwell Livada of Dayton, OH and Lauren Livada of Lenoir, NC. Frederick N. Young, age 74, of Washington Township, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2006 at home. He was born January 1, 1932, in Dayton to Robert and Kathryn Patterson Young. He graduated Oakwood High School, summa cum laude Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT and Harvard Law School. He was a prominent attorney and judge and was a partner of Young and Alexander, L.P.A. He served eight years in the Ohio House of Representatives, and twelve years as Judge in the Ohio Second District Court of Appeals. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joyce Canney Young, daughters and sons-in-law: Margaret Young and Bill Wilson, Dayton; Shirley and Joseph Spelman, Stafford, VA; Ann and Anders Sjostrom, Aland, Finland; Mary Young, St. Petersburg, Florida; three grandchildren, Robert and Tracy Spelman and Johanna Sjostrom; sister and brother in law Kathryn and Carl Ellis, Oakwood, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be remembered by many friends. He was very active in community affairs, including service as the first counsel and as President of the Children’s Medical Center Board, as the first counsel and as President of the Wright State University Board of Trustees, President of Dayton Carillon Park, Chair of the Montgomery County Republican Party and Member of the Board of Human Race Theater. He was a devoted member of Beta Theta Pi frater nity. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Bicycle Club, Dayton Forty- Niners, the Dayton Kiwanis, and the vestry of Saint George’s Church. He was a member of the Dayton Bar Association, the Dayton Lawyers’s Club, and the Ohio Judicial Conference. The family received friends from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, January 15, 2006 at the Tobias funeral Home, Far Hills Chapel, 5471 Far Hills Ave., at Rahn Rd. The Memorial service was held on Monday, January 16, 2006 at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 5520 Far Hills Ave, Rev. Carol W. Hull officiating. Linda C. Lord, (nee Corwin), age 66, of Kettering passed away Thursday, December 12, 2006 at Miami Valley Hospital after a long courageous battle with lung cancer and heart disease.  Linda was a 1957 graduate of Oakwood High School and committee treasurer for her class reunions. She was a member of Oakwood United Methodist Church as well as a board member. Linda was also a member of the Oakwood Historical Society and past president of the Republican Woman’s Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lord in 1994, her parents, Myron F. and Doris Corwin and sister Sylvia Paratore. Linda is survived by her 3 daughters, Shari (Ray) Cartwright of Jacksonville, FL, Karen (Stephen) White of Kettering and Tammy (Roger) Alexander also of Jacksonville, FL; 3 grandchildren, Ashley Alexander, and Julia and James White; and numerous nieces and nephews.  A memorial service will be held Monday, January 16, 2006 at 3 p.m. at Oakwood United Methodist Church, 206 E. Janet Oelman Swartsel, age 92, died December 9, 2005 after a short illness. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter F. Oelman in 1979 and her second husband Richard Swartsel in 1988. Janet was a lifetime resident of Dayton and Oakwood. She was a graduate of Oakwood High School and Western College for Women. Janet was active in many civic affairs including the Red Cross, Junior League, Dayton Senior Center and the Widows Home. Janet was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Oakwood where she served on the Vestry, was President of the Women’s Board and Directress of the Alter Guild.  Janet is survived by a son, William Oelman (Sue) of Hinsdale, Illinois; daughter, Barbara Champion (Kay) of Houston, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Oelman Music Fund at St. Paul’s Church, 33 W. Dixon Avenue, Dayton, OH 45419.  A Memorial Service was be held on January 7, 2006 at St. Paul’s Church. The family will receive friends in the Cloister after the service.
  

Harrison Campbell Berkeley, Jr., age 88, died peacefully in his Oakwood home on Sunday, January 1, 2006.  He was born January 13, 1917 in St. Louis, Missouri.  As a boy he lived in New York City and Paris, France before moving with his family to Dayton in 1927.  Mr. Berkeley attended Oakwood  High School.  He graduated from the Episcopal High School in Virginia and went on to Yale  University where he was treasurer of the class of 1940, and received a degree in Chemical Engineering.  During WWII, Mr. Berkeley was commissioned Lt. JG in the US Navy from 1943-1945.  He served as Chief Navigator on the Destroyer Gamble in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign.  After the war, he was employed by Specialty Papers and later by Vulcan Tool as Vice President and head of Production Tube Cutting. He co-founded the Association for Manufacturers and Tube Cutting and was given a Lifetime Achievement award for his work in this field. Mr. Berkeley was a member of Ye Old Buzz Fuzz Club and the Miami Valley Hunt and Polo Club, where he served as President from 1963-1964. He was a volunteer tutor for adult literacy in Dayton from 1990-1999. Mr. Berkeley “Hutch” was known to all as a true gentleman and an optimist in all things. His modest demeanor and wonderful, jovial personality will be sorely missed by his loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Wilshire and his brother, Griffith.  He is survived by his two children, Anne C. Berkeley and her daughter, Dinah Alice and Van H.W. Berkeley and his wife, Donna. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, January 13, 2006 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 33 W. Dixon Ave., Dayton with Rev. John F. Mary Beatty Reid, age 90, of Kettering, passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2005 at Liberty Retirement Community. Mary graduated from Steele  High School. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Robert “Bob” Reid on December 19, 2005. Mary was also preceded in death by two sisters, Charlotte and Marguerite and two brothers, Frank and Robert. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Anne Beatty of California and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was loved and will be missed. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 6, 2006 at the Routsong Funeral Home, 6 Oakwood Ave, Oakwood with Rev. Brooks Heck officiating. Robert W. “Bob” Reid, age 91, of Kettering, passed away Monday, December 19, 2005 at Liberty Retirement Community. Bob attended Oakwood City Schools and Culver Military Academy. He was the former owner of four Goody Goody Restaurants located in Tampa, FL, Santa Monica, CA, and Dayton, OH on Third Street and Salem Avenue, and was a former member of the Kettering Rotary Club. At the time of his death, Bob was survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Mary, who then died eight days later on December 27, 2005. Bob is survived by many nieces,
nephews and cousins. He was loved and will be missed. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m on Friday, January 6, 2006 at Routsong Funeral Home, 6 Oakwood Ave., Oakwood with Rev. Brooks Heck officiating. Bob and Mary’s family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Vera A. Holm, passed away December 16, 2005 in Bozeman, Montana. She was a teacher, musician, and artist. Her oil paintings of landscapes are treasured around the nation. She loved travel and nature. Born in 1909 to German immigrant missionaries to America, she was a graduate of Wartburg College in 1930 and earned a master’s degree from the University of Dubuque in 1951. During World War II she was employed by the U. S. Dept. of the Navy in Washington DC. She was the first married elementary school teacher to be hired in Dubuque, Iowa. She directed choirs and was an accompanist. Predeceasing her was her husband, the Rev. Dr. Bernard J. Holm who taught at Berkeley, the University of Maryland, Yale University and University of Austin. He was president of Wartburg Seminary from 1948 to 1977. Also predeceasing her was her mother Alfrieda and her father, the Rev. Dr. William Knappe, a professor of history and theology. Mourning Vera locally are the Holm family including Carol Holm, the Emerys, grandchildren Chris Holm and Elizabeth Holm Maze, and great-grandchild Isaac Maze. Private memorials were held.

Stephen B. Smith, Sr., age 87, of West Chester, formerly of Newtown Square, died Monday, Dec. 12 at home. He was the husband of Mary Clayton Smith. Born in Dayton on Dec. 23, 1917 he was the son of the late Adolph Smith and Janet Marley. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He loved to golf all over the world. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Stephen B. Smith, Jr., and wife Carol, of Jacksonville, Fla; Clayton K. Smith, and wife Sarah, of Boxford, Mass; Michael M. Smith, and wife Diane, of Exton; and Mary Tovin McCarthy, and husband John, of West Chester; his grandchildren, Theodore B. Smith, Emily B. Smith, Abigail K. Smith, Clayton K. Smith, Jr., and Marlay C. Smith; and a brother, Marlay Smith of Jenners Pond. His life celebration was held at the Donohue Funeral Home, 1527 West Chester Pike, Westown, on Friday, Dec. 23. Harold F. Tolnitch, age 79, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died Wednesday, December 28, 2005, at Kettering Memorial Hospital of pneumonia and heart failure.  He was preceded in death by his parents, George F. and Ann Tolnitch; brother, John Tolnitch; sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Walsh; and Mrs. Pat Hayes.  Harold was a National Sales Manager and Engineer retiring in 1993 from Universal Tool Co.  He leaves his wife of 49 years, Marilyn Floridis Tolnitch; 3 children, Dr. Lisa Tolnitch, of Raleigh, NC, Amy Tolnitch and husband, Jeff Rohr, of Cincinnati; and son, George G. Tolnitch, of Dayton; granddaughter, Styrling Rohr, of Cincinnati; also two sisters, Mrs. Geraldine Church, of New York and Marian Lewis, of FL; plus many nieces and nephews and friends.  Harold graduated from Rome Free Academy in Rome, NY, Princeton University and Lemoyne College.  He served as a paratrooper, in the Eleventh Airbourne Unit in South Pacific during WWII and the occupation of Japan.  He was chosen as the personal guard of General MacArthur for the first entry of American Troops into Japan and the previous signing of the treaty between the United States and Japan.  The family wants to extend thanks to Kettering Hospital Nurses, Dr. Brown and Dr. Singer, and the support of Hospital Chaplain, Sandy.  They also would like to thank his home care nurse aides for their loving care; Interim Health Care, Bill Webb, personal nurse; and long time physician, Dr. C.S. Kadakia.  Harold fought many health battles for the past eight years, and survived all of them until now.  His wife told him it was his training as a paratrooper in WWII that made him such a survivor.  Visitation was held Friday, December 30, 2005 at Routsong Funeral Home, 6 Oakwood Ave., Oakwood.  Funeral services were held Saturday, December 31, 2005 at St. George Episcopal Church, 5520 Far Hills Ave. Dayton with The Rev. John Sullivan Jr., age 93, of Oakwood, retired architect, was born August 25, 1912 in Cincinnati, Ohio and died Sunday, December 18, 2005 in Dayton, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Law Pogue Ricketts Sullivan. He is survived by his daughters, Frances Repperger and Stephanie Hunter. Mr. Sullivan was graduated from Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati, received his Bachelors in architecture from Cornell University and a Masters in architecture from M.I.T. He held memberships in Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Tau Beta Pi Honor Society, American Institute of Architects, the Engineers Club of Dayton and the MacDowell Society of Cincinnati. He was president of the Board of Trustees at the Dayton Art Institute for 14 years; Chairman of the Patterson Homestead Advisory Board for 37 years; Director of the Dayton Foundation for 9 years; first President of the Board of The Muse Machine; and President of the Board of Trustees of the Montgomery County Historical Society for 3 years. His major architectural projects include: Kettering Medical Center, Dayton International Airport, Grandview Hospital, Cox Heart Institute, Sinclair Community College (associate architects) and three buildings at Wright State University. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Dayton Foundation, 2300 Kettering Tower, Dayton, OH 45423 for the benefit of Dayton History at Carillon Park. Jon Deitloff Funeral Centre assisting the family. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 11 a.m. in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 33 W. Dixon Ave. in Oakwood.
