Jacks tennis unchallenged with 12-0 record

OHS boys tennis team, left to right: Kim Gilbert (coach), Chris Wille, Trevor Schumacher, Nick Reasoner, Addison Wille, David Wang, Ethan Greene, Michael Bennett, Stephen Kallenberg, John Kirk (coach).

The boys tennis team has been on a terror winning streak their last several matches. The competition has been increasingly difficult as the teams in both division one and two have been in the top ten on the coaches’ poll.  Oakwood started last week by playing one the areas top teams in Division I.  The Fairmont Firebirds are ranked in the top eight locally, and the Jacks needed their best tennis against them.  The Jacks came out of the gate with blistering play from Nick Reasoner. He encountered Brad Richardson at first singles and won convincingly 6-2, 6-0.  Addison Wille at 2nd played Brendan Murphy and showed good finesse to win 6-2, 6-4. Mike Bennett at third singles played a very difficult match against Zach Vallandingham beating him 6-4, 7-5. The first doubles team of Kallenberg and Schumacher played the most exciting match of the day. The Jacks started their match slowly, losing the first set 1-6.  After collecting themselves the boys won the second set 6-4. The third set excited the crowd with some great shots and break of serve by both. However, Trevor Schumacher served for the match and held to win the best match of the day 6-4. The second doubles of Greene/Wang played a well hit match winning in three 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

The Jacks then played an exhausting schedule defeating Northmont Tuesday 5-0, Wednesday, Preble Shawnee 5-0, Thursday, Eaton 5-0 moving them to 9-0.  Reserve also won a Varsity match against Dixie.

The showdown match was this past Monday against the Alter Knights also tied with the Jacks for the number one spot in the Miami Valley coaches’ poll.  The premier match of the day was the first singles match between undefeated Nick Reasoner and the Knights leading player Tommy Graul.  Nick has played Tommy over the years in tournaments and each of them knows the other’s game. Nick lost the first set without much of a fight but roared back to play a second set that saw blistering serves, great overheads and incredible play at the net defeating Graul 1-6, 7-5, and 6-4.  Addison Wille played a good match against their second singles player, Chris Riccardella but lost to him 6-1, 6-2.  Mike Bennett played the longest match of the day and eventually lost to Ethan Bramman.  The first doubles team of Kallenberg/Schumacher won easily against Morgan and Hidmi and the third doubles of Wang/Greene defeated Schroeder and Keighley clinching the match for the Jacks!

Finally, after beating the undefeated Waynesville team on Tuesday 3-2 and winning the first round of the coaches’ team tournament against Cincinnati Summit Country Day 5-0, the Jacks have a 12-0 record and prepare for their next challenging match against Vandalia Butler, the number-one-rated division I team.  Go JACKS!

School Board accepts teacher’s resignation

The Oakwood Board of Education met on Monday, May 1 and accepted the resignation of Harman fifth grade teacher Velvet Welz effective May 1.

According to police records, Ms. Welz was charged with six counts of petty theft from three teachers in the Oakwood School district and confessed to two more thefts outside the Oakwood city limits at other teacher functions.

“The past several weeks have been difficult for all concerned, especially the students, staff, and families of Harman School – both past and present,” said Dr. Mary Jo Scalzo, superintendent of Oakwood Schools. “This resignation is in the best interests of the Oakwood School District and our students.”

Oakwood Investment Group LLC announces Sugar Camp buy

The Oakwood City Council had a full plate of staff and status reports, visitors and surprises on Monday evening. Absent but excused was councilmember Stanley Castleman. In the middle of the meeting, Oakwood resident Lee Schear appeared before the council and announced that “about six hours ago,” he and two other local investors, Sandy Mendelson and Allan Rinzler, had just closed on the purchase of NCR’s Sugar Camp property.

The three investors, who formed Oakwood Investment Group LLC, purchased the property for  “close to what the Miller -Valentine Group offered ($5.9 million). Another source quoted in the Dayton Business Journal gave the going price as “roughly $5.5 million.”

According to Schear, the group has purchased the total of 36 acres of property as a “mixed-use project.” Among the goals outlined in the overall plan is to save the buildings, earmarking two buildings for office space, and one for non-profit use.
“We want to make it a part of Oakwood instead of apart from Oakwood,” Schear said. Schear also spoke of the project as being a “low-intensity transition.”

Twelve acres might be leased to another development company as well. The possibility of residential use also has been batted about.

“We are very pleased to see the property sold to a development group with plans that appear to fit nicely with our zoning code and with the needs of our city,” said Oakwood City Manager Norbert Klopsch. “We are eager to work closely with the development group, the surrounding neighbors and the entire Oakwood community to ensure that the property is put to the highest and best use.”

In other developments, the proposal to rezone the residence at 20 Oak Knoll Drive from  R-4 Residential to CB Community Business District  was defeated unanimously by the city council, following the recommendation of the Oakwood Zoning Board.
In the visitor’s portion, Lt. Col. Ricardo Davila of Wright-Patterson AFB thanked Oakwood for its support of the “over 60 military families in Oakwood” He also announced that on May 6, a final flight of a Vietnam-era C-141 Starlifter will commence at 9:30 in the morning at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, where it will come in for a landing on the Area B runway before being prepared for exhibition on the museum grounds.

Wright Library Board President Judy Thompson announced that a telephone survey will be conducted in May by Paragon Research asking questions of library users what their likes and dislikes are regarding Wright Library.

The Oakwood Historical Society has been given a basement storage room in the Municipal/Safety building for storage of historical documents and records. The room will also have a scanner and a computer for use by historical society personnel.
The next formal meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 12, 2006.
