DI team wins Renaissance Award

On Saturday, April 22, 2006 the state competition for Destination Imagination was held in Fairfield Ohio. The Harman Elementary sixth grade team of Annie, Jack, Anne, Claire, Dan, Max and Amanda competed in the Kidz Rulez Challenge.

This team has been together for three years and they continue to learn, have fun and as an added bonus… they have earned awards along the way.  This year after win
ning first place at regionals in March and collecting two special awards, they earned a trip to the state competition.

At the state competition the team earned a special Renaissance Award for the creation of an enormous dragon that is an integral part of their main performance.  The dragon they created is approximately 8 ? feet tall and 12 feet long. The team collected thousands of pop tops and glued them to the dragon as part of his scales. The pop tops were used to represent Dayton. Since they were invented in Dayton it was perfect. Plus, once the competitions are completed, the team will remove the pop tops and donate them to the Ronald McDonald House.

The team also earned first place in their challenge at state and will be going to Destination Imagination Global Competition held at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The team managers are Anne Ross and Jane Winch.

OHS Speech and Debate Showcase May 2

Head Coach Candis Pees retiring

The Oakwood High School Spring Speech and Debate Showcase will be held on Wednesday, May 2 in the Oakwood High School Auditorium at 7 p.m.  This year’s showcase will be free of charge and open to the public in honor of the retirement of Head Coach Candis Pees.

With the 2005-2006 season’s competition coming to a close, this year’s showcase is particularly poignant:  After teaching and coaching Oakwood’s speakers for many years, head coach Candis Pees is formally retiring. The success of Oakwood’s debate and speech teams has ‘put Oakwood on the map,’ and Mrs. Pees has been integral in establishing that reputation. But more important has been her work with students—on and off the team. Her jovial wit, her searing judgment, her novel instincts, her state of perpetual animation, and her deep love and respect for both the discipline and the students cannot be replaced.

At this year’s showcase, there will be several performances:  last year’s national qualifiers—Kira Mikityanskaya and David Frydman—will be performing their duo piece, and national qualifier and state champion Micah Stock will be performing his dramatic interpretation. First-time final round qualifier Brad Thomas will be performing his humorous interpretation, and semi-finalist Valerie Reaper will be performing her dramatic interpretation of Zelda Fitzgerald (a contrast to her recent stint as Maria in the OHS production of The Sound of Music).  Senior Annie Greene will present her original oratory, and senior Michael Mount will be demonstrating his prowess in his national qualifying event, domestic extemporaneous speaking.

Attending this free public event would be a fine way to honor the contributions over time of a singular woman as well as to speed the national qualifiers—junior Micah Stock and Georgetown-bound Michael Mount—on their way to the National competition in Dallas in June.

She has coached nine state champions in as many years: Christa Potter in prose poetry and Scott Liapis and Katie Pees in duet acting in 1995; Alan Brothers in dramatic interpretation in 1996; Chris Salamone in humorous interpretation in 1997; Joy Robinson in dramatic interpretation in 2002, Beth Stelling in humorous interpretation in 2003; and Will Allan in humorous interpretation in 2004, as well as Micah Stock this year.

Stock market team finishes 9th in region

As the business teacher at the high school I am always looking for opportunities to get information out there about all the neat things my students do!

Since February the Personal Financial Management classes have been in on-line stock market simulation...more specifically the Ohio Stock Market Simulation: (http://www.ohiosms.com/oh_dayton.shtml).

Each class was broken up into groups of three or four students and given $10,000 to invest as they wish for a 10-week period. They had the option of buying a long position or short selling and real-life numbers were used. The conclusion of the simulation was Friday, April 21. Oakwood entered a total of eight teams in
the simulation, in our Dayton region there were 120-some teams entered from various schools in our region and even more statewide. One group finished ninth in our region!
