OHS baseball seniors recognized

The Oakwood Lumberjack baseball community took the opportunity at last week’s home game vs. Milton Union to recognize seniors Matt Bacso, Aaron Huber and Michael Mount.  Bacso has already lettered twice in baseball and has started at shortstop for two seasons. Matt has become a fixture in the leadoff spot.

He leads the team with 30 hits, 23 runs scored, and 12 stolen bases and is second in average (.448) and slugging percentage (.806).

Huber has posted two wins with 19 innings pitched and he leads all pitchers with a 2.63 ERA. At the plate, the burly right hand batter is third on the team hitting .346.

Michael Mount has caught all but nine innings this year. Equally important, the right hand thrower bats from the left side and is Oakwood’s only left handed batter. He is fourth on the team in hitting (.333) with two homeruns, 11 runs scored and slugging percentage .500.

Bat Jacks capture three wins

The Oakwood High School varsity baseball team got back in the winning column with a strong week, posting league wins over Valley View, Milton Union and Preble Shawnee sandwiched around a non-league loss against neighborhood rival Fairmont.

Monday head coach Eric Oberding sent senior Aaron Huber to the mound.  The Jacks started strong with three-second inning runs while Huber extended his scoreless pitching streak by holding the Spartans off the board till the fourth inning. The visitors finally strung together a walk, single and a double for two runs, but the crafty senior hurler regained control and squelched the uprising.  Oakwood then put it away with nine late runs while Huber allowed only one more Spartan base runner en route to the complete game victory.  Hitting leaders were sophomore Andrew Carpenter with a single, homer and three RBIs, junior Sam Payne with two hits and two runs scored and senior Matt Bacso and junior Matt Vail with two hits each.

On Wednesday junior Kris Soward garnered his second win of the season with a complete game over Milton Union.  Soward held the potent Bulldog bats to two runs as he scattered six hits.  Lumberjack bats remained lively as they rolled to the 10-2 win.  Hitting star was sophomore Chris Hardy with a single, a home run, and four RBIs.  Other big bats belonged to Carpenter and Vail with two hits and two runs each.

On Thursday junior Mitch Jones went to the mound.  The hard throwing junior was in complete control, and all suspense was dispelled when the Jacks pounded Preble pitching for eight runs in their first two at-bats en route to a convincing 13-5 win.  The Lumberjacks enjoyed good relief work by Chris Hardy and Andrew Carpenter.  Hitting stars were Bacso with two hits, two runs and three RBIs, sophomore Josh Parrish with four RBIs, Vail with a homerun and two RBIs and Michael Mount with a hit, two walks and three runs scored.

The Jacks return to action next week when they complete the SWBL schedule and begin tournament play at home Thursday, May 4 against Preble Shawnee.

Junior Patrick Murphy, official team statistician, scorer and student manager, has set up the OHS varsity baseball website at www.oakwoodbaseball.ontheinter.net for further information about statistics and box scores. Please check the athletic department website about the schedule including rain out make-ups.

Reserve baseball on winning side

An unusually pleasant group of young men on the reserve baseball team are heading for their first winning season in the last three years thanks to some excellent starting pitching by Tyler (How many strikeouts do I have?) Philo, Ben (Who needs a reliever?) Quinn, and Alex (I’m a closer, not a starter.) Byrd.  Andrew Morris and Tony Lamb are effective relievers for the team this season.  Philo’s record is 4-0, with 33 strikeouts in 25 innings.  The durable Ben Quinn has 3 complete games and a 2-2 record.  Byrd (.000), Lamb (3.50), and Morris (3.70)  have the best earned run averages.

The top 6 hitters on the team this year are John Whalen (.467), Tony Lamb (.423), Ben Scott (.375), Tyler Philo (.357), Ben Wallace (.324), and Jack McIntyre (.286). Whalen leads the team in hits (14), walks (12), and on-base average (.628).  Tony Lamb has the most stolen bases with 11.  Jack McIntyre and Stuart Hull have batted in the most runs.

So far the team record is 7 wins and 4 losses.  We finish the season with five games scheduled for this week.  Our final home game is Wednesday, May 4.  Please wish us good luck.
