It all begins at 5:30 p.m. on Schantz Avenue just outside the Oakwood High School stadium. The cost for this meal deal is $6. The tailgate party is spon sored by the Oakwood Band Parents Association.

Come soak up the atmosphere, be with friends, and have a fantastic steak hot off the grill. See you there!

Jacks 2-2 in soccer preseason

Last year, the team was strong and won the District Championship. Eight seniors graduated, but this season has twelve seniors on the team, and on paper the team may be even more powerful than last year. Coaches Jeremy Storost, Don Groff and Kyle Duwell return, as do seniors John Loftus, Michael Neal, Bob Fecher, and Matt Vail in addition to this year’s captains Scott Casebere, Josh Curley and Jessie Sellers.  Other returnees include juniors Simon Gifford, John Harman, Brian Telek and Addison Wille, and returning sophomore Tristan Schnader. New varsity players include seniors Jordan Lee, Jonathan Liston, Colin Pierce, Shai Neiger, and Nicolo Vezzoso. Sophomore Andrew Morris and freshman goalie Scott Harman, who have been playing both varsity and JV, appear to be continuing on varsity as well. Unfortunately Sellers, Vail, Gifford and Vezzoso are all sidelined or injured at this time, though their returns are expected.

The preseason Ohio Cup Tournament saw Oakwood finish second in Division III.Individual scrimmages followed. Against Division I Vandalia-Butler, Oakwood won 2-0 with Oakwood generally dominating the field. Oakwood’s first goal came when Bob Fecher tore down the left wing and made a powerful shot which the goalie could only deflect weakly. Addison Wille one touched the ball for the first goal. The second goal came when Tristan Schnader lofted a soft pass at an angle which landed in front of Wille who completed a textbook finish on the ground to the lower left corner of the net.  Although a Division I team, Vandalia-Butler were outclassed on the day.

Oakwood’s defensive third was rarely penetrated due to a strong performance by Josh Curley and Oakwood’s sparkling defense, and goalie Colin Pierce made a tremendous leaping, finger-tip save to preserve the shut out.

The second scrimmage was away to a strong Lemmon-Monroe side, which had won their respective Division III Championship last year. The Oakwood defense was strong with few lapses, and Curley, along with John Harman, Mike Neal and Simon Gifford, put in strong defensive performances against a talented Lemmon attack. Scott Casebere scored the first goal for Oakwood, unassisted on a free kick, which
came from the right side outside the box. Casebere exploited a small gap inLemmon’s wall with precision, nailing the ball through the gap to score at the near post. Lemmon came back with an indefensible shot just outside the box to tie the game. Thereafter the game seesawed with several chances for both sides, but in the waning minutes, Lemmon scored its final goal on a fast break which snatched the game 2-1 for Lemmon-Monroe.

In its third scrimmage, Oakwood faced Yellow Springs who scored early From the field and followed with a PK making the score 2-0. However, Casebere then made a 40 yard blazing run down the right wing and crossed an arcing ball which was headed into the net by Schnader, in traffic in front the goal. The rest of the game was nip and tuck with Oakwood playing harder and winning more balls. John Harman displayed strong physical presence in the back field with numerous defensive headers. In the second half, Scott Harman took over in goal and made several important saves. However, Springs won a corner kick, and it was Brian Telek, on the near post, who cleared the ball off the goaline for the save. Later, Mike Neal’s tenacity held off a Springs offensive and countered with a through pass to free Addison Wille streaking toward the goal, a good chance. Bob Fecher saved another off the goaline on a corner kick by Springs, but in the end Yellow Springs scored again for a final of 3-1.

The final game of the preseason came when 32 soccer alumni, many of the greatest soccer stars from Oakwood’s past from 1995-2006, came to play the varsity boys. In past years it was unusual for the varsity to win this encounter. The alumni had the advantage of using three platoons while the varsity had more limited subs. The alumni began with domination, but this changed in favor of the varsity as the game went on. Scott Harman had several important saves in the game, and the varsity defense again proved very difficult to break down. The break for the varsity came in the second half with a counter attack beginning with a clear from Colin Pierce, to John Harman, to Addison Wille who assisted Andrew Morris who sprinted with Two defenders on his heels to score from the right side past the goalie. Later, Caseberepassed to Schnader who sent a through ball to Wille who slammed The ball off the post, recovered by Morris to assist Schnader as he buried The ball into the upper right netting. Varsity won the historic victory, 2-0.

Alumnae 3, Varsity 2

It was a hard-fought victory for the OHS field hockey alumnae on Saturday morning when they held their annual pre-season scrimmage against the varsity O team.

Pictured above are the victorious alumnae and below are the varsity players after they partook in a shaving cream fight.
