Cub Scouts from Pack 151 spent last Saturday morning at Wegerzyn Gardens learning about model rockets and shooting some into the stratosphere, never to be seen again!

Thursday 9/21/06, Boy Scout Pack 101 had it’s first Pack meeting of the year, headed up by a new Cubmaster, John Fisk. Mr. Fisk introduced a new tradition to the scouts last night, and that is an award for “Scout of the Month”.
Corey received the “Shining Light” award because of his positive attitude, dedication to attending meetings, willingness to help out and wearing full uniform to all meetings.

A group of Oakwood girls celebrated Jaclyn Frank’s ninth birthday and got in the spirit for the Eaton game with a tailgate party. They had a great time.
On Saturday, Sept. 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the lighted courtyard at Stivers School for the Arts will be the site of a luncheon/fashion show/holiday gift bazaar to benefit the piano and handbell department.
Fashions will be presented by Oakwood’s own “On the Avenue.” Guest will enjoy a luncheon catered by Benhams and motivational speaker Jennifer Kerns.Music will be provided by Stivers advanced students.
Hostesses for the event are Cissy Matthews, chair, Piano Department and Oakwood resident Tanya Noffsinger, adjunct faculty.

“Home in the Dome” is the theme of the 2006 Oakwood High School Homecoming Dance. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 8:30 to 11 p.m. in the West Gym.
Tickets are $20 per couple or $15 per single in advance or $25 per couple at the door. Contact members of OHS Student Council for tickets or more information.
Harman and Smith Schools and the community of students and parents will be joining schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Week during the week of Oct. 2 - 6, 2006.
Children and family members will be walking to school on Oakwood streets that converge on the front lawns of both schools. Many of the children will be using the cross walks at the Schantz, Dixon and Aberdeen street corners on Far Hills. Much of the walking and biking traffic will be at its height between 8:00 and 8:30 am every day between Monday and Friday.
Approximately half of the student body from Harman and Smith will walking to school all week along with parents, teachers and community leaders. Participants are encouraged to continue the walking and biking well beyond the October event – walking is part of a healthy, active lifestyle.
A tug-of-war game is part of the Harvest Festival.
The annual Edwin D. Smith Elementary PTO Harvest Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7, at 1701 Shafor Blvd. The sale of pumpkins and baked goods is meant as a community event to bring Oakwood neighbors together. “It’s much like a block party,” said PTO President Cindy DeLon, “There are free crafts and games for the children and plenty of baked goods for the parents to enjoy.”
Mark Guerrero who marshals over 50 volunteers the day of the event, guarantees that his team stands ready to help customers haul pumpkins, straw and corn shocks. Families can construct a scarecrow using straw, wood and wire provided by the PTO at no charge.
There will be plenty of small pumpkins to paint and competitive, old-fashioned field games begin at noon. Bakers Sean and Kate Halpin will be baking their fresh apple, pumpkin and pecan pies. Lynn Huelsman and Mary Kehner have again expanded their baked goods product line to include chocolate candies, ethnic breads, doggie and kitty treats (no kidding) and infused sugars.
The Universal 1 Credit Union, in partnership with Oakwood High School, will celebrate the grand opening of the first student-run Credit Union on Friday, Sept. 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Oakwood High School. This branch is the first in the Dayton/Miami Valley area which is a student-run and serves OHS students grades 7-12, faculty and staff members.
This branch will give students the opportunity to experience the responsibilities involved in running a small credit union office, as well as to develop personal financial management skills. OHS Teacher Advisors will assist the student volunteers in this operation.

“See You At The Pole” (SYATP), a national day of student prayer, will take place at Oakwood High School, around the flagpole on the front lawn, on Wednesday, Sept. 27. from 7:30 – 8 a.m.
SYATP is a student-initiated, student organized, and student-led event in which students meet at their school flagpole to pray for their school, friends, teachers, government, and their nation, and is scheduled annually on the fourth Wednesday in September. It is not a demonstration, political rally, nor a stand for or against anything.
Coordinator for Oakwood High School’s participation in this SYATP is OHS sophomore, Beka Bolmida.
