Eagles wing Lumberjacks 31-7

The Eaton Eagles came to town on Friday and brought two aerial storms. The rain covered Mack Hummon Stadium, as well as flying footballs.  Eaton handled the Jacks over 300 yards passing and three TD tosses.

Oakwood received the kick off and went three and out.  The Eagles took Will Merritt’s punt to their 40.  The Eagles the scored on their third play, a bubble screen for the touchdown.  The teams exchanged three and outs. The Jacks keep grinding and AJ Lewis broke free for a 60-yard run.  Lewis was stopped on the one and appeared to be injured on the play.  The blocking of Brian Beck, Bob Holmes, Joe Lefforge, Bill Dresher, Sam Payne and Matt Money opened a hole and Chris Hardy slammed in for the score.  Scott Casebere converted the extra point and the game was tied 7 -7 with 5:52 left in the first quarter.

Eaton controlled the rest of the game. The Eagles scored 10 unanswered points and took a 17 – 7 lead in at halftime. The Jacks made some nice plays, but couldn’t score late in the half.  John Diefenderfer, Mitch Jones and Will Merritt received passes from Lewis.

The rains came and delayed the game 30 minutes.  After the delay, Eaton scored two more touchdowns. The Jacks fought hard, but couldn’t put it in the end zone.  Robby Sherk came up with an interception. JT Allen, Evan Murphy, Mitch Jones, Ben Scott and Tony Lamb all made multiple tackles. Tommy Lane even got into the action. Will Garner and Jesse Kell made nice blocks on the offensive side of the ball.

The Jacks, now 3 – 2 on the season, travel to Brookville for a contest with the Blue Devils on Friday.  Michael Cobb may return for the game, but AJ Lewis is out for at least a week.

Go Jacks!

OHS volleyball among top 10 in coaches poll

The Oakwood Varsity Volleyball ladies, ranked in the top ten of the area Coaches Poll of Division I-II teams, had another eventful week. They battled 5 opponents and came home with 2 wins.

The week began with a SWBL win on Tuesday against Valley View at Oakwood. The scores were 25-11, 25-23, and 25-12. All eleven members of the team contributed to the match win. In game 1, Katie Fritz served 7 winning points in a row and Liza Ambrose aced the team during her serving string. In game 2, Oakwood was trailing by 19-22 when Elysse Carpenter blocked a shot and turned the tide. 5 straight serving wins by Katie Fritz and a kill by Anne Murphy finished the game. Finally, the third game started with a single point by the opponent followed by 17 straight serving wins by Jennifer Wuebker.

On Thursday, the team traveled to Waynesville, a Division II opponent. There they won with a scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-23. Setters Lauren Enns and Brittany Kalbfleisch consistently fed the ball to Katie Fritz, Anne Murphy, Lili Hartzell, Elysse Carpenter, Alisa Kessler and Becky Wenzke. The two setters counted on passing from Meredith Baer, Liza Ambrose and Jennifer Wuebker.

The week ended with a trip up I-75 for a tournament hosted by Piqua High School on Saturday. Oakwood played Fort Loramie with a tough loss of 23-25, 18-25. The next match was against Graham. In the middle of the first game co-captains Lauren Enns and Katie Fritz collided resulting in injury to Enns. As a precaution, Enns was done for the day. This threw the team into a 5-1 offense with Brittany Kalbfleisch as the sole setter. The first game was a loss but the team rallied and came back with a second game win of 25-22. To close the match another battle ensued with Oakwood loosing 24-26 thus loosing the match. Immediately following the Graham match, Oakwood played Ada. This match resulted in a loss with a scores of 20-25 and 20-25.

The Oakwood Junior Varsity volleyball also ended the week with 2 match wins against Valley View and Waynesville. Strong serving and contributions by all team members resulted in the wins.

This week the Oakwood Varsity and Junior Varsity volleyball ladies travel to Tri County North on Monday, Milton Union on Tuesday and host Bellbrook in “The Pit” on Thursday. All games begin with J. V. at 5:30 pm followed by Varsity at 7 pm.

Jills soccer bumps Brookville 4-2

Brooke Klopsch gets ready to send the ball downfield.

The Oakwood girls varsity soccer team played just one game last week, hosting Brookville Tuesday night in Southwestern Buckeye League action. A moment of silence was observed before the game for Pat Finley, who had passed away the night before.  Mr. Finley was the father of Oakwood senior Sarah Finley. Each Oakwood player wore a pink leg band on which the name Pat was printed.  Oakwood senior Valerie Reaper gave a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem.

The game did not start out well for the Jills, as a defensive breakdown led to a Brookville goal just 25 seconds into the contest, Hannah Steck scoring an easy goal for the Lady Blue Devils.  Oakwood steadied and began controlling the action, scoring at the 24:39 mark on a Tory Danis goal, the assist from Brooke Klopsch.  Eleven minutes later Molly Breidenbach was led nicely on a pass from Rachel Huber.  Breaking away from the defenders, Breidenbach showed great patience and at the right moment slipped the ball past the Brookville goalkeeper.  Molly upped the Oakwood lead to 3-1 with 5:33 to go in the half when she emerged from a scramble in front of the goal to blast one into the back of the net.  Halftime score: Oakwood 3, Brookville 1.

Brooke Klopsch finished the scoring for the Jills 15 minutes into the second half, nailing a low shot from the right hand side just inside the left post.  Molly Breidenbach had a hand in this one, too, getting the assist. The Brookville girls didn’t quit, as five minutes later Hannah Steck struck again, breaking away from the Oakwood defense and scoring from the right hand side, making the final score Oakwood 4, Brookville 2. Oakwood had 28 shots, 19 of which were on goal.  Brookville had just 3 shots, 2 on goal.

This week Oakwood travels to Milton Union on Tuesday night, and hosts rival Bellbrook Thursday in a 7:30 SWBL showdown.  Oakwood and Bellbrook both enter the week undefeated in league play.

JV Jacks soccer shuts out Waynesville 2-0

Kyle Rieger heads the ball into the net. Oakwood won 2-0.

The Oakwood mens’ JV soccer team fought an aggressive Waynesville team for a 2-0 victory. The defense, led by Garrett Luther and Tim Fecher, once again proved strong, not letting Waynesville take many shots on goal. The Jacks midfield did an excellent job controlling the pace of the game and it was ultimately them, and not the forwards this week, that did the scoring for Oakwood.

Six minutes into the game, freshman midfielder Zach Rodabaugh took a hard shot from about 25 yards out which sailed into the upper left hand corner of the net. The Lumberjacks would take that 1-0 lead into half time. The second half found the game getting more physical and the Jacks keeping the pressure on the frustrated Waynesville keeper. Then, about 13 minutes into the half, the entire team pushed up on a corner kick placed perfectly by Jonny Rudwall.

Junior defender Kyle Rieger was in the right location to force the ball into the net for Oakwood’s second goal.  Lumberjack goal keepers Rudwall and Scott Harman continue to stay strong, only allowing four goals on the season. This victory brings the Junior Varsity record to 7-1-2.

Oakwood’s top three runners kept pace with the Brookville runners for the first two miles but pulled ahead during the last third of the race. Julia Sizek, Dani Reese and Elizabeth Connelly finished within eight seconds of each other in third, fourth and sixth places respectively. Liz Whalen and Natalie Denka both had strong
races finishing fourteenth and fifteenth. The last two runners for the varsity were Kara Hamilton and Sara Dietz who finished eighteenth and twentieth.

Davina McCarthy (16th), Autumn Bruno (17th), Hanna McCarthy (19th), Brittany White (20th) and Hallie Moberg (21st) also ran for the third place finishing reserve team.

Rounding out the Oakwood varsity finishers were Marc Skill (25th), Scott Slivken (27th) and Chris Wolcott (30th).

In the reserve run, the Jacks were lead by Tory Tomlinson (21st) and Will Reese (24th). Also completing the course were Ben Rodabaugh (30th), Andy Myers (33rd) and Evan Duffley (49th).

OHS golf team claims 2nd place in SWBL

The 2006 OHS varsity golf team.

The Oakwood golf team earned a share of the SWBL title with a second place finish at the league tournament held at Beechwood Golf Course last Thursday. The team went into the tournament undefeated in regular season matches but fell short of claiming the title outright by three strokes. Valley View won the event with a team score of 310.

In other tournament play, the Oakwood Jacks had a strong start to their season with a good finish at the Alter Invitational and medalist honors for senior captain Ben Boyer with a three under par 69. Competing in strong field of local teams and D-1 teams from around Ohio, Oakwood scored a .314.

Boyer has since finished as low individual in two other tournaments, the Columbus Academy Shoot out, at Columbus Country Club with an even par 72 and at the Butler Invitational at Cassel Hills Golf Course with a 72. Boyer tied his own school record this month by firing a 5 under par 31 on the front nine of Moraine Country Club in a match against Miami Valley School.

The Jacks have had solid performances all season from junior Ty Kern, who shot a one under par 34 on the front side of WGC Course in league play against Bellbrook. Kevin Hanes has also been solid for the Jacks, playing in all events this season. Seniors Chris Adams, Andy Yeoman and Tim Duning have each contributed to the team in nine hole and 18 hole events.

“Each of the guys has had a chance to step up for the team this season”, said head coach Jen Lohmeyer. ”Ben has certainly done a fine job leading the team. Juniors Joe Vanderburgh, Trevor Schumacher and Peter Martin have all done their job well and freshman Ronnie Stump finished strong for us at Cassel Hills. We have played well as a team and are having a lot of fun. The boys have worked hard all season. This week we will compete in the Sectional Tournament at Kitty Hawk. Only four teams advance to Districts, added Lohmeyer. We plan on being one of the four.”
