Do you know what a ‘crib’ is? You just think you do and that’s cause you’re too long out of school, or too long of tooth and you haven’t realized how antiquated your once-hot-slang-bromides are…
John Heck, Oakwood class of ’69, arrived on Oakwood Ave. about nine AM Sunday morning. “ I didn’t get to bed ‘til three cause that’s when the party finally ‘crashed’. We had about 16 senior high school boys and their girl friend for a cook-out on the roof of the Newcome (Monument and Main). It was a beautiful moon-light night…the girls left some time after one AM…the boys decided it was too cold to sleep on the roof garden so they all slept in the guest room…and one of the boys told me: “Mr. Heck, you’ve really gotta cool CRIB!” (See, you-all would have said ‘PAD’)
And here’s another one. Kate Heck, OHS ‘2000, Miami Univ. ’04,politely listened to her grandparents telling of eating in a diner with truck drivers wearing backward-bill-caps, tank-tops, and shoulder-to-wrist tattoos. “They wanted to chat and were great guys but we couldn’t keep our eyes off the tattoos.” “What you should have said to them,.” said Kate, “Was …‘You guys have great TATS!’”
A note from Sally & John Fisher – recently of West Dixon Ave. now of Palm City, FL. “I’ve been plant-purchasing and landscaping. (Remember Sally’s beautiful gardens on Dixon Ave.) We’re having friends for dinner next week – one’s Sally Crawford *(OHS)…the restoration company in Miami has promised to return pieces broken in our ‘move’ by Oct. 5th and I’ll be able to finish our décor…we miss you all…tell our many friends ‘hello’…”

Camargo Hunt’s Hunter Trials were last Saturday in Indian Hill (Cincy). They had a picture perfect day and the weather man certainly owed ‘em one. ‘Old Timers’ reminisced about their days of ‘showing’ in rain, sleet, etc.. and ‘…in my day we’d have dozens in each of the ‘qualified Classes’…The ‘course’ is on Clippinger’s Farm on Shawnee Run Road. “There are 125 entries,” said Ann Shephard. “Twenty five in the Outside course (the BIG fences) and one hundred in the Junior Class ring.” Morley Thompson, Jr , and Dr. John Babcock – both Joint Masters of Camargo, vied for blue ribbons in every ‘qualified’ class. Honey Hammer was John’s ‘groom’ – and Morley had his Mother’s wonderful man, Theodore, with him. (All Pat Thompsons old friends had to spend time with Theodore and reminisce, and wipe their eyes).
Hundreds of spectators lined the Outside course and competed in the Tailgate judging. The Bill Chatfields’ were there. “Just saw your parents,” one attendee told Anne – they were talking about Betsy & Lee Whitney. John Steele, Chili Rogers, Martha Hollister, Selma & Irv Harris. Old friends, Gerald & Betsy Pack, both MFH of Green Spring, NC, judged the show – again the reminisces flew and promises to continue in New York in Jan. of 2007 when the MFHA Assoc meets for their 100th anniversary.

A most colorful and unique invitation arrived by ‘dragon-fly’. ‘It’ was Chinese Red, and depicted dragons, and Chinese lanterns, and a unique address: Dayton Daily News Print Technology Center, 5000 Commerce Drive, Franklin, Ohio (that’s the huge edifice on your right as you speed down IR#75 past the Dayton Mall!
