Ellen Vanderburgh, an OHS senior, ran the 2006 Chicago Marathon with her mother, Patty, on Oct. 22. Over 40,000 runners participated in this race - the second largest marathon in the world (behind New York). Together, they raised $8,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through the Team in Training Program. Patty and Ellen thought this would be a good way to combine their passion for running and service to the community. Ellen, Patty and her father, Paul, trained for the past four months running up to 20 miles at a time to prepare for the race. Paul ran the Columbus Marathon the week before Chicago. This was Ellen’s first, Patty’s second and Paul’s seventh marathon. Ellen’s training was hampered by a severe case of shin splints, which meant that she had to do much of the training on an exercise bike for the last two months prior to the race. Pictured above is Patty and Ellen approaching the finish line at the Chicago Marathon.

Above is a photo of Oakwood Troop 101 Tiger Cubs’ first achievement, that of obtaining their Bobcat badge. The Tiger Cubs had to demonstrate completion of eight separate tasks including memorizing the Cub Scout promise, motto, handshake, sign, and salute, and the law of the pack. The eight pictured Tiger Cubs are, from left to right, Bobby Rowlands, Aidan Maney, James Donnelly and Leo Flotron in the first (front) row, and Kaes Drumheller, Kaelen Patel, Stephen Gunzelman and Ben Keller in the second row, along with their Den Leader, Charlie Maney, in back.
