Italian Renaissance on Schenck Avenue

The Humane Society’s ‘Pet Afflaire’ was a ‘howling’ success, as it has been every year.  For the past few years it’s been held at the Presidential Banquet Center – the first ‘Afflair’ was at Dayton Country Club who’s never recovered from their surprise of the hundreds of canine and feline (very well-behaved) ‘guests’.

Brian Weltge, Director of the Humane society, greeted the hundreds of canine ‘alumnae’ of the Society’s Shelter. The ‘Alumn’s’ handlers all commented on Brian’s ‘doggy’ tie. Barb O’Hara ‘wore’ her ‘Monsieur Moutasde’ around her neck! ‘Monsieur’ is a big, beautiful Persian cat.  Judy Comisar was there with her handsome ‘Springer Spaniel’ – a Humane Society alumn. “I’m just home from visiting my newest Grandchild,” said Judy.  “Daughter Ann just had a baby girl!  Yes, Brad is still in New York…I’ll tell him you asked about him.”

Table number fourteen was a ‘winner’ – Carolyn Young and her two daughters, Barbara Fryburg, Phyllis Kramer, Joyce Carr and Jane Scharrer.  Nearby was Lisa Reeder and her dog. Caryl Philips, Mike Houser,  and Steve Wargo had dogs in tow.

Joyce Overholser, President of the Society, introduced the ’06 Honoree, Deb Hunt. Deb has been a prime-mover in many phases of the  services and programs of the society. She’s a Board member, and an attorney with Sebaly, Shillito & Dyer.
The Matt Hecks, the Richard Mantias, the John Rions, the Bill Kaschs, the George Klings, Ann Kuntz, Tami Whalen, Richard Pohls were all part of thief big, happy crowd.

When Brian Weltge asked all the owners of dogs and cats adopted from the Humane Society to please stand – over half the diners stood.  And speaking of food – there were doggie-hors d’oeuvres, the table centerpieces were gigantic martini glasses – filled with dog bones, dessert was served in dog dishes, and all the dogs sitting and lying under the tables beside their ‘people’ – received lots of surreptitious ‘treats’ from the people-plates. The over-worked waiters had to serve tables by stepping over, around, and beside all sizes of paws and tails.  “I haven’t stepped on a tail this year,” said one waitress, “but I sure got one last year!”  And strangely enough there was very little barking, no fighting, - but lots of dogs who couldn’t wait to go home!

Saturday afternoon St Paul’s Episcopal Church was scene of the wedding of Hdiko Marcus and Dan Coughnour.  The wedding party was a wonderful family affair. The Maids of Honor were Lauren Marcus and Andrea Marcus, daughters of the bride, and Chelsea McCauley, daughter of the groom. The Best Man was Daniel Coughnour, son of the groom.  The Groomsmen were Attila Kassa, brother of the bride, and Cim Loose, cousin of the groom. The parents of the bride, Dr. Norman & Harriet Marcus, and the Flower Girl, Zoe Marcus, Grandaughter of the bride – all participated in the lovely ceremony.  The Rev. John Koepke III was the officiant.

Dan’s sister, Candy, and his brothers John and Tom were there.  Several of the groom’s parents friends were there – Jane Heywood, and Doris Skipton and her daughter Janet.  The reception was given at the Hope Hotel.
