Downtown Dayton will be ringing in the holidays on Friday, Nov. 24 with the musical event ‘Sounds of the Season.’ The community will experience festive music from local choirs and musical groups performing in the lobby of National City Center. The performances will begin at 5:30 p.m. and conclude at 7:45 p.m., just in time for the lighting of the holiday tree on Courthouse Square.
‘Sounds of the Season’ is a FREE musical celebration presented by the Dayton Holiday Festival and Culture Works. Groups performing this year include Horace Mann Elementary, Eleventh Hour, and the Kettering Children’s Choir.
This musical event is just one of the many free family activities taking place during the Dayton Holiday Festival’s Grande Illumination celebration on Friday, Nov. 24 from 4 to 9 p.m. Other activities will include carnival rides, horse drawn carriage rides, live entertainment on the Courthouse Square Main Stage, the Tike’s Shop, the Holiday Village, and the Gingerbread Homes for the Holidays Contest.
Downtown Dayton is lighting up the holidays with the help of the magical Holiday Village. Part of the Grande Illumination, the Kettering Tower Lobby will transform into a free festival featuring games, crafts, and even the chance to call Santa’s helpers. This family event, sponsored by Time Warner Cable Digital Phone, takes place on Friday, Nov. 24 from 4 to 9 p.m. The Kettering Tower is located at the southeast corner of Second and Main Streets.
This year’s Holiday Village will feature free crafts, carnival games, face painting and more. K12 Gallery for Young People will be among the special ‘fantasy shops’ where children can take part in hands-on holiday crafts. A favorite at the Holiday Village is Time Warner Cable’s ‘Dial-An-Elf’ phone bank, which will enable kids to call the North Pole and share their wish list with one of Santa’s official helpers!
The Holiday Village is a great place to bring the kids, and it has something for the adults too! An assortment of handmade items provided by local organizations will be available for purchase in the Marketplace. Unique items, from baked goods to jewelry, can make the perfect gifts for the upcoming holiday season.
Parents and Guardians can shop ‘til they drop while their child enjoys all of the benefits listed above plus visits from Santa. The Blast is from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. for children ages 3 to 12 years.
Cost: $7/hr for members and $8/hr for non-members. Each additional child in the same family receives a $1/hr. discount.
Registration must be made by Wednesday, Nov. 22.

Take time away from the kids to shop, run errands, have lunch with a friend or just relax - guilt free. While you take advantage of the gift of time, your child will enjoy experiments, games, crafts, a snack, and more. Children will make at least two gifts, which will be wrapped before they leave so they can surprise the recipients! According to families who brought their children last year “the gifts were a wonderful surprise and they were already wrapped—in paper the kids made!”
Programs are offered now through Dec. 20: Wednesdays: Nov. 22 – Dec. 20, noon-3:00 pm for ages 3 to 5 years, Saturdays: Nov. 25, Dec. 2 and Dec. 16, 9:30am-12:30pm for ages 3 to 12 years, Sunday: Dec. 10, 2-5:00pm for ages 3 to 12 years.

The DESC 25-Year/Retirees Club will hold its annual Christmas Luncheon Friday, Dec. 8, 11:30 a.m., at the Presidential Banquet Center, 3548 Presidential Way, Kettering. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. Retirees and former employees of DESC (Defense Electronics Supply Center) and Gentile Air Force Station, and their guests, are invited to attend.
Reservation deadline is Dec. 1 and may be made by calling Fran Hageman, 937/426-2492.
Originally formed as a social activity, the club performed more of an official function by enabling Center employees to “put a face with the name on the phone” when coordinating the numerous official activities of the Center. It is part of the reason DESC had a “family atmosphere” rather than serve as “just another place to work.”
Although DESC has closed its gates, the club survives, bringing old friends together through periodic luncheons, field trips and a very popular newsletter which keeps members informed of items of interest to them. Those interested in joining also should contact Hageman.
The Tike’s Shop, a local tradition that started decades ago at Rike’s department store, continues today at the corner of Second & Main Streets in the Schuster Center Wintergarden. The shop will open for this year’s holiday shopping season on Friday, November 24 from 3 to 9 p.m.
Part of the 2006 Dayton Holiday Festival, the Tike’s Shop continues to provide families with a magical and memorable shopping experience. Children can do their own holiday shopping with help from ‘elves’ who assist them in selecting gifts that stay within their budgets. Parents wait outside the shop while the children shop and wrap their purchases. Families can also enjoy the animated Wonderland Window displays before or after a visit to the Tike’s Shop, as well as other holiday activities in the Wintergarden on Saturdays.
Students from Miami Valley Youth Career Services operate the Tike’s Shop. The students help design the layout of the store, select merchandise for a kid’s budget, and manage the store throughout the holiday season.
“Every child in the community should experience the Tike’s Shop,” said Sandra K. Gudorf, interim president of the Downtown Dayton Partnership. “It is one of those downtown holiday memories that many adults experienced as children, and it is wonderful to see the tradition continue.” An extra attraction during selected hours will be visits from Santa Claus. This is a great opportunity for the kids to share their Christmas wish list and get a picture with the jolly old fellow!
For the 2006 holiday season, the Tike’s Shop will open:
Grande Illumination - Friday, November 24: 3-9 p.m. (see Santa from 4-8 p.m.)

December 18-22: 10 a.m.-7 p.m. (see Santa from 2-5 p.m.) * The Tike’s shop will be open until 6 p.m. on Dec. 17 & 23
The Tike’s Shop is managed by Miami Valley Youth Career Services. The store is generously sponsored by Reynolds & Reynolds, Z-93 Radio, ABC 22 & FOX 45. The Tike’s Shop is part of the 2006 Dayton Holiday Festival presented by Time Warner Cable Digital Phone. The Festival is also sponsored by the Downtown Dayton Partnership, the City of Dayton, Montgomery County and the Virginia W. Kettering Dayton Holiday Festival Fund. For more information, call (937) 224-1518 or visit www.downtowndayton.org.
At 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 26, the 2006 Dayton Children’s Parade will bring the streets of downtown Dayton to life with the bright colors and joyful sounds of the holiday season. This beloved annual event is part of the Dayton Holiday Festival’s annual kickoff of the holiday season, and is designed to be entertaining for families and kids of all ages. The Holiday Festival and Children’s Parade got their start more than 30 years ago, thanks to Mrs. Virginia Kettering and a group of volunteers who wanted to ensure that all area children would have an opportunity to enjoy the holiday season, regardless of their economic means.
This year’s Grand Marshal is “Curious George” from the animated PBS KIDS series based on the popular books by Margret and H.A. Rey. The goal of the series is to inspire children to explore science, engineering and math in the world around them. And what better guide is there for this kind of exploration than the world’s most curious monkey? Curious George’s appearance in the Dayton Children’s Parade is made possible by ThinkTV 16, which will also be teaming up with the Miami Valley Channel (cable 17) to broadcast the parade live for viewers in the Dayton area.
Parade spectators will be treated to lots of colorful floats, clowns, antique vehicles, and even a special “off-season” appearance by the Dayton Dragons’ mascot, Heater. For animal lovers, the 2006 parade will feature the Spittin’ Creek Llamas & Alpacas, 75 or more cheerful canines from the Gem City Dog
Obedience & Agility Club, and horses in every size from miniatures to Percherons.
The Dayton Children’s Parade will start on West Second Street near Wilkinson Street, head east to Main Street – arriving at the corner of Second and Main at the official start time of 2 p.m. — head south on Main to Fourth Street, and move west on Fourth, dispersing near Sinclair Community College. The parade takes place rain or shine, and lasts approximately one hour. For kids whose families come down early to claim a prime parade-viewing spot, the KeyBank Candy Cane Fun Run for kids 12 and under will begin at 1 p.m. Free registration will begin at 12 noon at Courthouse Square, and each runner will receive a goodie bag for participating.

The City of Oakwood is conducting the annual leaf collection program through Friday, December 22, 2006. The city is divided into ten sections with each being collected on a 2-week interval. The leaf collection program follows the same schedule as the brush and branch collection program. Leaves are to be placed in the street gutter and the brush and branch material in the tree lawn (the area behind the curb, just off the street). The two materials must not be co-mingled. Also, please remember that the leaf collection season is limited to the 10-week period in the fall of each year. Leaves should only be placed in the street during the fall program. All other times of the year, leaves and incidental yard debris must be placed with the brush and branch piles behind the curb, or, if in small quantities, with the regular household trash.
The brush and branch map found in the October-November “Oakwood Scene” shows the scheduled dates for these pickups. The city will make every effort to stay on this schedule, but may vary a bit from time to time based on weather conditions and other factors.
To help the city provide the best possible service, please remember the following things:
During the 10-week collection season, all leaves should be raked directly into the street gutter. Please make an effort to do this just a day or two before the scheduled pickup and make sure to pile the leaves in a narrow row to least obstruct the traveled roadway.
Under no circumstance should you place brush, branches or other yard debris in the street gutter with the leaves.
Do not bag the leaves - leave them loose.
Do not park vehicles in the street on the day your area is scheduled for leaf pickup.
Do not place pumpkins, corn stalks or bales of straw in with the leaves or your brush and branch materials.
The standard yard debris pickup and dumpster programs will continue through the leaf collection season.
However, as in the past, the special pickup program willbe suspended from October 16, 2006 until January 3, 2007. Please wait until after January 3, 2007 to schedule pickups for the 2007 calendar year.
If you have any additional questions, please contact Theresa Caldwell or Ken Perkins at the Public Works Center (298-0777).
