, age 79 of Centerville, passed away unexpectedly Dec. 1, 2006 at his home. Born Aug. 10, 1927 to Amanda & Carl Granzow. He along with his brothers & sister grew up during the depression years on Virginia Ave. in Dayton. Paul spent his summers learning tennis on the clay courts at Walnut Hills Park. He developed a life-long love of the sport both as a participant & spectator. He attended Parker Co-op (Patterson) & worked as a tool-maker at Frigidaire. It soon became apparent that Paul was not cut-out to be a tool-maker. All he produced was scrap. Upon graduation from high school in 1945, Paul enrolled at the University of Cincinnati in the engineering program. Anyone who knew Paul realized early on that engineering was not for him. Since he knew he would probably be drafted anyway, Paul flunked out his first year. Because of his charm, good looks & the advice from his older brother “Never volunteer for anything”. Paul spent the waning years of WW ll state-side in Washington D.C. & Camp Atterbury, Indiana. During a saxophone performance with the USO at Camp Atterbury, Paul developed an appendicitis attack & needed surgery. During his recovery, he took an aptitude test which indicated he should be a salesman or lawyer. He liked the idea of the law. With the help of the GI bill & various individuals, he began night classes at the Univ. of Dayton while working during the day. Since his grades were good, he was soon able to transfer to day classes. After completing two years of pre-law at UD, he transferred to the Univ. of Cincinnati law school where he ranked in the top 10 percent of his class & became Editor of the law review. Upon graduation in Oct. of 1950, Paul camped out on the doorstep of Wellmore (Baldy) Turner, a prominent Dayton attorney. Through his tenacity, Paul was finally granted an audience with Mr. Turner who promptly told him that anything he had learned in school & would use in practice, was purely coincidental. Paul became a partner of Turner, Wells & Granzow in Oct. 1956. Paul & Baldy became close through the years & Paul considered him a second Father. Paul continued with the firm until 1984 when he retired from the law practice to become Chairman of the Board of The Standard Register Company, a position he held until his death. With his partners, Nick Hollenkamp, Wayne Dawson, Ames Gardner & Joe Koenig, they practiced law with gusto & had fun doing it. Paul is preceded in death by his parents Amanda & Carl, brother Carl & sister Margaretann. Paul is survived by his beloved wife of 20 years Lana, former wife Joanne, his children Diane (David) Simpson, Barbara (Doug) Acker, Paula (Karl) Viehman & Douglas (Deb) Granzow, grandchildren Paul David Rudwall, Rachel Rudwall, Jonathan Rudwall, Diana Simpson, James Simpson, Andrew Viehman, Janie Viehman & Will Viehman, brother Ted (Judy) Granzow & numerous cousins. Family will receive friends Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006 from 5 to 8 PM at the Schlientz & Moore Funeral Home, 820 Miamisburg-Centerville Rd. (Rt 725).
