Charlotte E. Bahl (Rogge) age 91, of Monroe, OH (formerly of Oakwood) passed away Thursday, December 28, 2006 at Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village. She was a member of Bellbrook Presbyterian Church. Charlotte was a 1933 graduate of Oakwood High School and attended Denison University. Charlotte was a leader for the Brownies and Girl Scouts, and was a “Tri Delt” at Denison. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross and Hospice of Dayton. Prior to getting married, Charlotte worked as a dental hygienist. Her family owned the Peerless Pantry, now known as the Peerless Mill Inn. Charlotte was an accountant with Dayton Wire Wheel, a family owned business. Charlotte was preceded in death by her infant son, Stephen, and her husband, Herbert, in 2003. She is survived by her 2 daughters, Sharon Gilmore and Leslie (Frank) Luhn; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at 10:00 AM at the Routsong Funeral Home, 6 Oakwood Ave. and Irving Ave. The Rev. Theresa Wood will be officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH 45420. Leland V. “Junior” Norris, Jr. age 77, of Kettering, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at Miami Valley Hospital. Junior was a 1947 graduate of Fairmont High School and a charter member of the Kettering Fairmont Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1952, he received his B.S. Degree in Education from the University of Dayton, and served as captain of the 1952 UD Basketball team which included the trip to the NIT finals. From September 1953- June 1955, Junior was a teacher at Fairmont High School and coached basketball, baseball, and football. Junior served as the Montgomery County Clerk of Common Pleas Court from 1976 to 1988. Junior was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, the Masonic Lodge Riverview #7717 F&AM, Scottish Rite, A.A.S.R., Antioch Shrine Temple, the Flyer’s Club, a University of Dayton Varsity “D” Honorary Lifetime Member; member of the UD Athletic Hall of Fame, the Dayton Amateur Baseball Commission Hall of Fame and the Dayton Agonis Club. Junior was preceded in death by his parents, Leland Sr. and Gladys Norris, brother, Donald Norris and sister, Jean Crago. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Marilyn Norris; 4 children, Linda (Stuart) Petersen, Craig (Deb) Norris, John Norris and Patty (Bob) Baird; 3 grandchildren, Joe and John Norris and Lisa Petersen; 1 great-grandson, Joe Norris; 2 brothers, Edgar (Sharon) Norris and Ralph (Peg) Norris and sister, Marilyn Shoemaker as well as numerous nieces, nephews, close friends and former teammates. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at 10:00 AM at The Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 155 E. Thruston, Oakwood with The Rev. Gary Eichhorn officiating. Burial in David’s Cemetery. Harry C. Richards age 97, of Kettering passed away on Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006 at Hospice of Dayton. Harry graduated from Purdue University in 1932, later attending The Harvard Business School. He was the President of Transmission, Inc. that he co-owned with his brother Bob Richards. Harry was a member of Dayton Rotary Club for 55 years, Engineer Club, Fur, Fin and Feather Club, Spring Run Fishing Club, Dayton Country Club, Diamond Lake Yacht Club in Michigan and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for nearly 50 years. He served during WWII, as commanding officer of the 303rd Field Artillery. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Cleia Richards; first wife, Louise Richards in 1969; second wife, Elizabeth Harbottle in 1985 and brother, Jack Richards in 1994. Harry is survived by his daughters, Lynne Richards-Garner of Kettering, OH, Gail Denise of Cincinnati, OH and Jill (Mark) Bridges of Tampa, FL; brother, Robert (Angela) Richards of Dayton; 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 1 niece and 1 nephew. A memorial service will be held, followed by a reception at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 33 W. Dixon Ave., Oakwood on Saturday, January 13, 2007, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jack Koepke officiating. Madonna (Wine) Goss age 83 of Washington Township, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2006 at Miami Valley Hospital. Madonna was a graduate of Roosevelt H.S. and Manchester College. She also completed numerous graduate studies including Westminster Choir College; Juilliard School of Music; and the Cincinnati conservatory. In 1946 she began her teaching career in Alexandria, OH teaching vocal and instrumental music in all 12 grades. She returned to the Dayton area in 1948 where she taught choral music and organ at Roosevelt High School. Madonna taught in Oakwood and 21 years in the Kettering School System before retiring in 1983. Many of her students were selected to sing with the Ohio Honors Choir who toured Europe several times as she accompanied and was an assistant director. On a subsequent tour she took her own students and parent chaperones to Austria to sing with choirs from other countries in concert. She will be remembered as a devoted teacher and second “mom” to many students as well as for the outstanding productions of Broadway Musicals she directed at Kettering Fairmont East High School. Her 50-year organ career began while she was still in high school. Madonna was an organist at College Street Church of the Brethren, Ohmer Park Methodist, Memorial Baptist, South Park Methodist and Dayton First Baptist Church, where she was a member. During those years, she also directed choirs at First Baptist and Fairmont Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the American Guild of Organists and past Dean of the Dayton Chapter AGO, Secretary and Historian for 12 years of Ohio Choral Directors Association, President of Delta Omicron Music Fraternity, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, member of The Dayton Music Club, member and board member of the Dayton Women’s Club and Choral Director of the first three “Muse Machine” musical productions. In 1984 she received the honor of being inducted into the “Chester A. Roush” Hall of Fame. Preceded in death by her husband, Ted, and her parents, Dr. Norman B. and Grace E. Wine. Survived by son, Craig Goss, daughter Sherri Kertesz and grandsons, Larry and Stephen Kertesz; relatives and many loving friends. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 29, 2006 at 2:00 PM at the Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering, with The Rev. David Turner officiating. Private burial. Thomas Callaghan Ferneding, born January 21, 1918 in Dayton Ohio, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 11, 2006 surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his wife Arlene of forty years, who served as a Navy nurse, Lt. Cmdr. NC USN during WWII, also an identical twin brother, John C. Ferneding, Lt. Cmdr., USNR, from Dayton, Ohio, and sister Jane B. Ferneding, of Dayton, Ohio. Thomas, a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, entered Naval service in 1940 and served as Lt. Cmdr., where he first met Arlene in the South Pacific Theatre. He participated in many naval battles (Midway, Coral Sea, Iwo Jima, and Guadalcanal) in the South Pacific aboard several heavy cruisers and escort carriers. A survivor of the USS Astoria CA-34, a heavy cruiser, was sunk at the night battle of Savo Island by a Japanese naval force. He was severely injured and received the Purple Heart medal plus other service decorations. Returning home at war’s end and moving to Scottsdale, Arizona with his family, he engaged in real estate investments, property developments and management. Following a business transfer to Tacoma, Washington, he served as Western Divisional Sales Manager for Duro Test Corporation of New Jersey. He is survived by his sister Anne Ferneding of Dayton, Ohio. Also surviving are three sons, Michael Ferneding, James Ferneding of University Place, WA and Thomas (Lauri) Ferneding of Beaverton, Oregon, and four daughters, Patricia Jelliffe of Euless, Texas, Susan (Thomas) Crowther of Everett, WA, Lisa (Greg) Cooper of Spanaway, WA, and Barbara (Steve) Buchberger of University Place, WA. Grandfather to Julie, Scribner, and Christopher Jelliffe, Kimberly (Todd) Bryan, Brian and Scott Williams, Steven and Jennifer Ferneding, Patrick, Kevin and Katherine Gallagher, Kyle, Brad and Lauren Buchberger. Great-grandchildren Riley and Taylor Bryan, and extended family in Ohio. Step-grandchildren Steven Cooper, Todd, Drew and Courtney Crowther. Memberships: Navy League of the United States, Tacoma, WA Council, DAV Disabled American Veterans, AmVets, Military Order Of The Purple Heart, Boy Scouts of America (Eagle Scout), Notre Dame Club of Western Washington, St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Visitation was held on Thursday, December 14th at New Tacoma Funeral Home. A memorial service was held at 1:30 p.m. on December 15, 2006 in the Evergreen Chapel, New Tacoma Cemetery.

Eugene M. “Gene” Mitchell, age 83, of Kettering, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006 at Kettering Memorial Hospital.  He was born July 3, 1923 in Cincinnati, OH.  He is preceded in death by his son, Daniel E., his parents, Eugene Daniel and Marie (Healon) Mitchell and sister, Marie Jennings of Cincinnati. Mr. Mitchell is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Eleanor “Jean” Mitchell, sons, James and Thomas of Kettering, and loving nieces and nephews and friends.  Mr. Mitchell was a Navy PT Boat Veteran of WWII. Mr. Mitchell graduated (with honors) from the University of Dayton in 1950 and successfully completed courses from the Wharton School of Finance in PA.  Mr. Mitchell was president of Dayton-Walther International and Vice-Chairman of the Dayton Walther Corporation.  He was currently president of Business Communications Services Inc. and was on the board of directors of many corporations including the Dayton Walther Corporation, Euchlid Corporation, Grote Corporation, Verity Corporation, BCS Inc., Outdoor Sportsman  Inc. Mr. Mitchell was chairman of the Heavy Duty Business Forum, a “life” member of the Truck Trailer Manufacturers Association (TTMA) and was over a 50-year active member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Mr. Mitchell was a longtime member of St. Albert the Great Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at 12:00 noon at St. Albert the Great Church in Kettering, OH 45429.  Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Dayton. Mr. Mitchell’s family will receive guests at a visitation on Monday, December 18th from 5-8:00 PM at the Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering. Obituary from the December 12 issue...

Arlene (nee Johnson) Jacobi Carlton Tallian, passed away peacefully on Nov. 24, 2006 in Bend, Oregon. She and her husband had resided in Bend for several years. Born to the cabinetmaker John Christian Johnson and his wife Dorothea Ries on October 1, 1916, Arlene resided in Clinton, Iowa until after the death of her husband Dr. Albert F. Jacobi. In 1960, she moved to California where she married the retired businessman and rancher Dick Carlton. They lived in Carmel, San Francisco, LaJolla, and Honolulu. Upon Dick’s death in 1988, she moved to Jackson, Wyoming. There she met Walter Tallian, a retired banker from Chicago and they married. Arlene spent her life appreciating the beauty in the world and added to it with her special style. She designed a dozen of her homes, using contemporary ideas and materials to complement the unique building sites. One house was featured in House Beautiful. Talented in many ways, she began knitting at her grandmother Ries’ knee and knitted all her families sweaters for 75 years. She was a talented seam stress, first stitching all of her uniforms for nurse’s training at Jane Lamb Hospital. She did needlepoint and beading and sculpture. She began all oil painting in the 1980’s and became an accomplished painter in the last five years. Her eyesight and eye for detail was superb. She is survived by her husband Walter Tallian, three children: Carol Jacobi Holm of Dayton, Ohio; Fred Jacobi of Margate, Florida and Cathie Jacobi Uchiyama of Salina, California; along with six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Mourning her locally is the Holm family, including Carol, Chris Holm, Elizabeth, and Isaac Maze. Arrangements were private.
