Oakwood Invitational scores Jacks wrestlers 4th

Oakwood hosted a six team invitational during the break between Christmas and New Years with a surprising level of support for the wrestlers.  The contests matched the spirit of the crowd as Oakwood started off strong by handily beating Northwest 50-26 and Tri-county North 54-27.  A close loss of 35-28 to a tough Dixie team was fol lowed by losses to runner-up Northeastern and eventual champion Coldwater.

The team was paced by first place finishers Joel Turner and Paul Hochwalt.  Matt Werst defeated four foes on his way to a second place.  Other multiple match winners who placed in the top three were Daniel Jacobs, Brandon Bustillo, Nolan
Kronbergs and Alec Livada.

Here’s the individual placement:

103 pounds, Daniel Jacobs 2nd
112 pounds, Paul Hochwalt 1st
125 pounds, Brandon Bustillo  2nd
140 pounds, Joel Turner 1st
145 pounds, Nolan Kronbergs  2nd
160 pounds, Matt Werst 2nd
189 pounds, Alec Livada 3rd
Heavyweight, Jake Horlacher  3rd

Jr. High mat Jacks take 4th at Northridge

Saturday the Junior High wrestling team advanced five wrestlers to the finals and two to the consolation finals which helped the Jacks team take home fourth place in the 19th annual Northridge Invitational tournament.  Missing a couple of key wrestlers this weekend due to illness, Oakwood finished just 20 points out of second place.

Leading the way for the Jacks was Alex Kooser and the returning champ Will LeBoeuf who both took home the title with 1st place finishes. Ian McEvoy, Kevin Lee, and Jamison Kordik hung tough in the final matches of the night to place 2nd, with Dan Pohlman and Taylor Rhodes taking home 3rd and 4th respectively.

Oakwood competes with Kettering Middle School on Wednesday night and is back home for their only home match of the year on January 20th in the Pit for the Oakwood Duals Invitational tournament.  Please come out and cheer them on.

Grapplers out-muscle Division I Carroll

Intense practices paid off Friday night when Oakwood varsity wrestlers came out fighting and took revenge on a well-respected Carroll high school team. Carroll, a Division I school with two returning state placers was no match for the Jacks.

The team came out fast and hard with Oakwood’s first four wrestlers scoring pins before the fans had time to get comfortable in their seats.  Joel Turner (140), Nolan Kronbergs (145), John Harmon (152) and Matt Werst in a surprise move up to wrestle at weight class 171 staked the team to a 24 point lead that they never relinquished. Paul Hochwalt (112) and Jake Horlacher (285) pinned their opponents in hard- fought, crucial matches to make it a total of six team pins in a 42-34 victory. This avenged an earlier loss to Carroll in the Firebird tourney last month.

Many familiar with Oakwood wrestling said it had been a number of years since the crowd was on their feet cheering the whole match like they were Friday night. The next match for Oakwood will be on Jan. 13 at Bellbrook, please come and support the Jacks!
