Zelinskas breaks hurdles record

Zelinskas broke 18-year-old hurdles record.

Liberty senior Arlene Zelinskas broke an 18-year-old school record in the 55-meter hurdles, clocking a 7.99 during the semifinals of the event to highlight day one action at the Virginia Tech Invitational.

Zelinskas’ record-breaking effort allowed her to advance to Saturday’s 55-meter hurdle final with the sixth-fastest qualifying time. She had previously equaled Delethea Quarles’ school-record 8.11 effort during the preliminary round. The senior was not finished for the day, as she also tied for fifth in the high jump, clearing 5-5.

Arlene Zelinskas picked up where she left off last season. The multi-event performer was the named the Women’s Outstanding Track Performer at the 2006 Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships after winning the pentathlon and the 60-meter hurdles.

Zelinskas graduated from Oakwood High School in 2002.

Schmitz also finished 3rd in the 500 Free with a time of 5:30.00. Freshman David Ireland buoyed the team effort with a third place in the 200 IM and a second place in the 100 Fly. Senior Michael Cobb contributed with a time of 52.06 in the 100 Free for second place and a third place in the 100 Back. Sophomore Brent Turner took third in the 100 Breast, and Chase Doman received a second place in the 100 Back. Junior Andrew Carpenter won the 50 Free race with an incredible time of 24.26. The Jacks 400 Free Relay team of Ireland, Doman, Turner, and Schmitz finished 3rd in a near photo finish in which the anchor swimmers for Beavercreek, Oakwood, and Springboro swam their 100 nearly neck and neck for the entire race in an extremely exciting finish.

For the Jills, Freshman Ellen Viereckl finished third in the 50 Free and Sophomore Alexandra Harmony was third in the 100 Fly. The 200 Medley, 200 Free, and 400 Free Relay teams all took 4th place.

Paul Hochwalt gets ready to pin his opponent.

On Saturday, Gary Kesler’s varsity wrestlers traveled to Bellbrook for an extremely tough day of competition, coming home with two first place finishers, one second- and one third place winner. The Jacks faced some of the toughest competition they have come up against all season with some matches coming down to the last seconds.

Captains Matt Werst and Paul Hochwalt wrestled great matches all day earning first place in their classes. D.J. Jacobs worked his way to a second place finish, and captain Joel Turner earned third place with an amazing come-back in the semifinals. Alec Livada and Jake Horlacher finished fifth.

Quality coaching along with tough practices are paying off for the Jacks as they continue to improve with each match.
