I am in a unique situation. As a Wisconsonite, born and bred, I had never planned or hoped to leave my home. I love Waukesha, nearby Milwaukee and beautiful Wisconsin. It is a great place and its where my family and friends are/ Then, in February of 2006, my husband took a job in Miamisburg, Ohio. Because our youngest would be entering her senior year in the fall of 2006, it was decided that my husband, Doug, And I would begin this journey in separate states. After spending a rather tearful first week with him as he settled in, I returned to Wisconsin. Doug drove (and continues to drive) the six and ? hour one-way trip home many weekends and I travel down to Ohio for ten day visits many times. It is hard on all of us.
Doug really enjoys his new job and the company he works for and so we explored the surrounding area looking for the “right fit” – a place where we could be happy (or as happy as one can be when they are leaving behind loved ones and the place they call home). Neither of us felt suited for the country or the “cookie-cutter subdivision.” Realtors showed us an assortment of houses in a variety of areas, but nothing clicked – making the move all the more dismal. We wanted a true neighborhood, a walking community where community meant something.
Then, we stumbled upon the city of Oakwood (and George Kinzeler of Kinzeler Realty gave us our first taste of the locale and locals. His daughter, Kathy Mantica, became indispensable to us). Doug and I took a lot of walks, talked to people and came to the decision that we would make Oakwood our home and in July we purchased a home there. Our new neighbors have been more than kind, making a less than perfect situation so much more tolerable and even enjoyable. Whether I’m in Wisconsin or Ohio, I always read The Oakwood Register – it has been so informative. I want to thank you and commend you and your publication.
Yes, I wish I were staying in Wisconsin – but happy to have found Oakwood. Again, many thanks.
