OHS wrestlers third out of twelve at Finneytown

Matt Werst champion in 160 pound class

Oakwood traveled to Finneytown (Cincinnati) on Saturday to take part in a twelve-team tournament with teams from Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Oakwood finished fourth, just a half a point out of third with 153.5 points.

In the first round, Paul Hochwalt (112), Daniel Jacobs (DJ) (103),  Joel Turner (140), Nolan Kronbergs (145), and Jake Horlacher (285) all registered pins. Joel looked like a freight train on a pumpkin as he pinned his Finneytown opponent in 51 seconds. Matt Werst (160) carved out a stack and arm bar to tech his Scott (KY) opponent 15-0.

In the second round Brandon Bustillo (125) dealt a pin to his opponent. Joel was now on a roll with his second pin, this one in 32 seconds. Nolan, down 8-2 fought back and stayed close and then hit an arm bar and over the head pin. Chris Klingensmith (189), wrestling up, reversed his Wyoming opponent and pinned him.

In the third round, Paul cruised to a pin in 38 seconds. DJ had a back and forth tough match before winning 10-6. Joel decided to try a little Russian magic and hit the Russian headlock to hip toss and pinned his third opponent from Urbana in 24 seconds. Matt Werst operated like a doctor in surgery and pinned his opponent from Conner (KY).

In the fourth round, Paul Hochwalt, Daniel Jacobs and Joel Turner won. Oakwood stood in first place at this point.

In the fifth round, Brandon Bustillo fought hard for an 11-3 win. Matt Werst used take down after take down to rack up points, then the fourth take down was fatal to his opponent from Finneytown as Matt Werst pinned him.

In the Championships and Place Matches, Oakwood had seven wrestlers in the competition. Wrestling for first place was Matt Werst (160). Matt, in what was one of the most exciting matches of the tourney- a real war, fell down to his Mt. Healthy opponent 8-2. But in what would be a great comeback began to shift momentum his way with takedowns and riding. Matt tied it up 11-11 with seconds left in the final period. His opponent was showing fatigue, and Matt hit another take down to win 13-11. Matt got first in the 160 weight class.

Daniel Jacobs was able to take third in the 103 weight class, countering his opponent for a 6-4 win.

Paul Hochwalt was able to fight hard in the 112 pound class moving out to a 7-2 lead. He pinned his opponent from Stebbins, to take third place.

Joel Turner had an amazing day pinning three opponents in less than 51 seconds and took second in the 140 pound weight class.

Nolan Kronbergs showed he has the skill and ability to go far in the road to state by taking third in the 145 pound weight class.

Brandon Bustillo came out aggressive on his Wyoming opponent and quickly took a 2-0 lead before dominating 19-5 for fifth place in the 125 pound weight class.
Jake Horlacher, just a freshman but very competitive this year, fought hard for sixth place in heavyweight.

The wrestling team moves on to Chaminade in a trimatch that includes Bellbrook on Wednesday at 5 p.m. They have another tournament next Saturday at Triad.
