It was the best of times, it was the very best of times, indeed, as the Oakwood Jacks and Jills successfully defended their SWBL Championship titles at the Beavercreek Y last Saturday night. It was a packed house with teams from Bellbrook, Valley View, Franklin, Waynesville, Eaton, Carlisle, Brookville, and Lemon Monroe all looking to take the title from our swimmers, but both teams won easily thanks to great efforts by all swimmers, lots of depth in all the events, and enthusiastic, wildly cheering teammates surrounding the pool! The Jills earned 183 points over second place Bellbrook (124) to win the title for the 5th year in a row, and the Jacks garnered 189 points over second place Bellbrook (135) to win for the second year in a row. This team is well represented from all grades, but hats off to the departing seniors who have done a superb job nearly doubling the team membership (since their freshman year) and mentoring the younger swimmers to believe that the Oakwood Swim Team can and will dominate the SWBL Championship!

Congratulations to our Diving Team as well! The Jacks and the Jills each contributed 12 points to the SWBL Championship total as well! For the Jills, Caroline Hartel took 4th place, Stephanie Williams, 5th, and Elissa Mosman finished in 6th place. Once again, Peter Martin was the top Jack diver earning 4th place, Peter Schweizer -5th, Will Reese - 7th, and Mitch Jones finished in 8th place. This is a fine group of Oakwood students who have worked hard and represented our community well with their good sportsmanship!
Congratulations to coaches Bryan Ammer, Monica Brouwer, and Steve Wilhoit for their excellent guidance, unending patience, and endless hours of support!
As Michael Beall (Sr) knocks down several free throws, his younger brother Jeff celebrates.
The Jacks beat Waynesville in a home game last Friday 81-52 and has advanced to a 15-1 record.
The team shot a 63 percent field goal percentage (30/48). This is very impressive. (and helped us reach the 80 point level) This is the most points the Jacks have scored this season. 80 point games are pretty rare in high school basketball.
Robby Sherk was the leading scorer with 19 points and had 9 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals; Scott Casebere had 12 points bucketed including 4-for-4 in free throws, 2 rebounds and 3 assists; Jake Mays, Will Merritt, and John Richardson all dunked in eight points; Chris Hardy sunk 7 points; and Tommy Lambert and Will Garner knocked in six points for the game.
The team also shot an impressive 80 percent in free throws (16/20). Michael Beall (5/5) and Scott Casebere (4/4) helped with this impressive number. Also, Coach Stone put Michael Beall in the game with four minutes left and he scored seven points in that time - a 3-point basket and 4-for-4 in free throws.
The Jacks will play again this Tuesday at the Nutter Center against Milton-Union.

The Oakwood varsity wrestling team’s best performance of the year was truly a team effort as Oakwood narrowly edged out Plymouth by three points for second place in this weekend’s ten team tourney at Triad High School. Everyone contributed as the team rebounded very strongly from a sub-par performance at CJ - eight wrestlers to place in the top four of their weight class.
Oakwood started off very quickly and aggressively in the early rounds and kept the momentum going all day. DJ Jacobs started the team off right in the first round with a pin, followed by pins from Paul Hochwalt, Nolan Kronbergs, John Harman, Matt Werst, and Alec Livada. The team steadily moved up in team totals from fourth to third in the next few rounds as Brandon Bustillo, Joel Turner, and Brian Graeser joined in the pin parade with arm bars or just good old fashioned strength moves prevailing. The niftiest move of the day was a third round match where Joel Turner executed a lat toss with a hip toss-down went the second seeded Plymouth opponent. Easily the most pleasant surprise of the day was the outstanding play of Brian Graeser in the always tough 171 lb class as he pinned his three opponents from Triad, Plymouth and Ben Logan. The only real controversy was at 189 where Alec Livada tied with two others for third but lost out on tiebreakers and
out of the top four finishers.
In the Championships and place matches, Oakwood had eight wrestlers in the competition with second through fifth place team overall still up for grabs. Jacobs, Hochwalt (3 pins), Bustillo, and Werst (3 pins) had already locked in their places, so it was up to Joel Turner to make the move. He didn’t disappoint with a 17-2 crushing of his opponent. John Harmon followed, moving up a place with a sound 14-8 drubbing. Nolan fought hard but was pinned in the second round and Brian Graeser lost his chance at first with a tough decision to the eventual winner from McComb. In the end, they had just enough at 214.5 to move into a very well deserved second place finish. Ben Logan finished at 301, Plymouth at 221 and McComb at 198 rounded out the top four.
The wrestling team will be at Madison this week as prep for the SWBL tourney this weekend in Eaton. Come out and see the team as they bear down on the upcoming Sectionals in two weeks!
