Gary Kessler’s OHS wrestlers traveled to Eaton Friday and Saturday for the SWBL tournament, where the competition was fierce. The talented Jacks easily made it through the first two rounds on Friday night, going into Saturday morning with every team member still in the running.
Saturday’s rounds proved to be very competitive, and the Jacks came through with some impressive wins. Joel Turner and John Harmon had great matches, each coming from behind to win in the early brackets. Brandon Bustillo and DJ Jacbos also won matches at this level contributing team points. All four were unfortunately eliminated in the next rounds.
The big news of the tournament was the success of three Oakwood wrestlers: Paul Hochwalt (112), Matt Werst (160), and Jake Horlacher (285).
Paul Hochwalt finished first, fighting off some stiff competition along the way to the final rounds. His early matches were all close, coming down to the final minutes each time. He won them all however, and made it to the championship match where he faced a tough opponent who had beaten him in the past . Paul came out faster and more aggressive than he had been all weekend, and seemed to easily over power his very tough opponent, placing first for Oakwood! An especially impressive accomplishment for anyone, let alone a sophomore wrestler.
Matt Werst also faced tough competitors on his way to the finals rounds, winning each round but 1, placing him in the running for third and fourth. Matt won an extremely fast paced, physical match in the semi-finals despite a painful shoulder injury that occurred during the match when Matt’s arm was severely hyper extended. After a brief injury time –out, Matt, despite being in a great deal of pain, went on to win the match. Unfortunately, this injury prevented Matt from wrestling in the finals – he was forced to default, winning fourth.
Jake Horlacher also got off to a very physical start. On Friday night. Horlacher and his opponent were locked in an upright position when Horlacher made a strong, quick movement moving the wrestlers apart. The opponent tumbled into the wall and was unable to finish the match. Horlacher, who was winning 3-0 at this point, was the winner. Jake lost to the first seed early on Saturday- regrouped to easily pin his next opponent later in the day, and made it to the final rounds, where he won fourth.
Oakwood wrestlers have had impressive successes this year, consistently having four to five wrestlers named to the Dayton Daily News wrestling honor roll each week. They move onto sectionals this weekend, where they will contend for district placements.
