Shrove Tuesday at St. Paul’s

What do you get when you combine Dixieland jazz, prayer, pancakes, and the chance to help teens change their lives as they rebuild homes in impoverished rural Southern Ohio? The Shrove Tuesday celebration at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, that’s what—and the whole community is invited.

On Tuesday, Feb. 20, St. Paul’s will celebrate Mardi Gras with Dixieland Jazz Vespers at 5:45 p.m. in the church, at 33 W. Dixon Avenue. In true New Orleans Mardi Gras style, the prayers and readings of the traditional Evening Prayer service will be enlivened by spirituals sung to the accompaniment of a Dixieland jazz band.

Following the service, the band will lead everyone in a rousing chorus of “When the Saints Go Marching In,” as all go marching in to the Parish Hall. for the traditional Pancake Supper (with St. Paul’s own delicious additions of sausage and curried fruit).

The celebration and supper are free, but a free-will offering supports St. Paul’s annual Youth Mission Trip to rehabilitate housing in rural Athens County, an outreach that parish teens, their friends, and their mentors have carried out for six years.

The whole community is welcome to join in the celebration and supper. Please call St. Paul’s at 293-1154 to RSVP, so we’ll know how much food to prepare.

St. Paul’s will also welcome Lent with Ash Wednesday services in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit on February 21; Holy Eucharist with the Imposition of Ashes at 9:15 a.m. and 12: 15 p.m., and Evening Prayer with Imposition of Ashes at 6:00 p.m. For more information, contact the Church Office at 293-1154

E-mail notification system

Wright Library now offers patrons the option of receiving notices by e-mail, RSS or text messaging.  The Library has added this service by using the online e-mail reminder service, Library Elf.  Elf is an Internet-based tool for keeping track of what’s due, overdue and ready for pickup. Users can keep track of one or more library accounts in one place and receive reminders (sometimes called pre-overdue or early notification). Notices are sent when the user wants them — before items are due (up to seven days advance notice, weekly notice or every day reminders). To sign up, go to www.library-elf.com, have your e-mail address, library card number and PIN ready, and follow the simple instructions. This service is free to the Library and to its patrons. Anyone with questions about the Library Elf system can call the library at (937) 294-7171.

Wright Memorial Public Library is located at 1776 Far Hills Avenue in Oakwood.  Their web site is www.WrightLibrary.org.
