Herbert E. Whalen, Jr., age 90, of Kettering passed away Monday, Feb. 12, 2007 at Kettering Medical Center. He was a member of St. Albert the Great Church. Herb was a graduate of Oakwood High School, attended the University of Dayton and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Finance. He worked as a General Agent at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. He was a member of the 30er’s, Miami Valley Hunt, Oregon Historical Society, member of the Dayton Rotary, on the board of the American Red Cross, and the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. Herb was past president of the Dayton Association of Insurance
and Financial Advisors, a life member of the Million Dollar “Round table, a founding partner of Dover Partners Inc. and member of the Miami Valley Estate Planning Council. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert E. and Marie (nee Schantz) Whalen Sr. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ginny Whalen (nee Berghoff); children Kathy (Jim) Kavanaugh of Washington Twp., Mike (Elizabeth) Whalen of FL and Bill (Susan) Whalen of Spring Valley; Herbert E. Whalen III “Hew” of FL, grandchildren James, Laura, John and Ashley Kavanaugh; Patrick, Joseph an Daniel Whalen and Adam and Colleen Whalen; sisters Janet Eilers of Kettering and Elaine Mitchell of Centerville; and brother John (Jayne) Whalen of IL. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Feb. 17 at 10 a.m. at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, Kettering. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Patricia Jane Howell (nee Duffy), age 81, of Oakwood, passed away peacefully on February 9 at Hospice of Dayton after an extended illness, and surrounded by her loving family. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Pat was the daughter of Charles and Hazel Duffy. Orphaned at age 9, Pat and her younger brother, James, moved to Centerville, Indiana and were raised by her aunt and uncle, George and Carly Early. Pat attended Indiana University and studied fashin design, and worked summers and holidays at Wright Patterson AFB in the waning days of World War II. She moved to Dayton permanently in 1946, worked at WPAFB full time in the Aero-Med Lab, and eventually became secretary to the Commanding General of the base when she married in 1949. After raising a family, she was a successful real estate agent until 1980. She co-founded and became President of Howell Rescue Systems until her retirement in 1990. Over the years Pat was an active member in numerous organizations, including the Evening Hours Garden Club. Progressive Mothers Club, The Dayton Country Club, Oakwood Woman’s Kiwanis and the Dayton Woman’s Club. Despite an active schedule, she always found time to be a Sunday School teacher, homeroom mother, Cub Scout Den Mother and many volunteer interests she could help our with. In addition to her parents and aunt and uncle, she was preceded in death by her brother James Duffy, and an infant son. Pat is survived by her three sons, Dan L., of Cincinnati and Dayton, James Lee (Pam) of Washington Township, and Todd (Kim) of Oakwood; and grandchildren Shelby, Spencer and Nathan. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m. at the Christ United Methodist Church. 3440 Shroyer Rd., Kettering, Ohio. Burial in David’s Cemetary. Family will receive friends from Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the Routsong funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd. at Woodman Drive in Kettering. Steven Drury Womsley, 34, of  Newport, RI died Monday, February 5, 2007 in Newport. He was the husband of Jody (Kingery) Womsley. He was born in Dayton, OH, on May 1, 1972. Steve was involved in the marine industry for over 26 years and owned Custom Yacht Outfitters. He attended Oakwood High School in Oakwood, OH, and attended Chapman University, in Orange, CA. He was a member of the Ida Lewis Yacht Club, Newport National Golf Club, and the International Yacht and Athletic Club. Steve’s true passions were sailing, fishing, hunting and golf. He embraced life, was a loving husband, exceptional father and a true friend. He leaves his wife Jody, his son, Alexander, his parents Bob and Lynn Womsley, his brother Rob Womsley, sister-in-law Stacey Womsley and two nieces McKay and Ashton Womsley. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 10, 2007, at 11 a.m. at St. Columba’s Chapel, 55 Vaucluse Avenue, Middletown, RI. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Steve’s memory to the Steven Womsley Memorial Fund which will go to benefit the Ukrainian Children’s Orphanage from which Alexander was adopted. Margaret Elsie (Wallace) Reger, age 82, passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at Walnut Creek Nursing Center.  Margaret was born October 19, 1924 to Alexander and Norah Wallace in Glasgow, Scotland. She moved to the United States in 1928 when she was 4 years old, and lived in Mt. Clemens, MI for 6 years and Sidney, OH for 6 years.  Margaret graduated from Sidney High School, June 3, 1943, attended DeForrest School of Electronics and took X-ray training at Belmont Hospital in Chicago.  She was an active volunteer at Womanline, a member of C.C.L. and was a past member of Southern Hills  United Methodist  Church. She married Harvey A. Reger on November 22, 1951 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Harvey passed away on August 3, 1983.  Margaret is survived by her 4 sons, Jeff (Cheryl) of Xenia, OH; Richard (Susan) of Auburn, IN and their children, Alyson, Adam and Andrew;  Randy (Nancy) of Worthington, OH and their children, Alec, Ben and Emily; and Bruce (Elizabeth) of Dayton, OH and their children, Madison and Sam; sister, Moira Moore; nieces, Holly Janney of Salt Lake City, UT and Heather Janney of Dayton. A memorial service was held Monday, February 5, 2007 at Routsong Funeral Home, Kettering Chapel,  with Pastor Dean Penrod officiating. Dr. Christopher E. Desch, There will be a Memorial Mass on Saturday, February 3  at 10 a.m. at the Alter High School Chapel. Dr. Desch, a cancer specialist living in Richmond, Virginia, passed away on December 10, 2006.  Dr. Desch was a 1973 graduate of Alter High School. He attended Ohio State University on the Chick Evans Scholarship for golf caddies, working summers at Dayton Country Club. He graduated from OSU’s School of Medicine in 1981, and was a prominent Richmond physician specializing in oncology, hematology and pain management. He leaves behind his wife Roxanne; son Toby; mother Geraldine; brothers David, Joseph, Matthew and Michael; and sister Tracy.

Mary Margaret (Peggy) Davis, dear sister, mother and friend, age 71, of Oakwood, passed away Saturday, January 27, 2007 at Heartland of Centerville. She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Kathleen McCormick; husband, Merrill Davis in 1996. Peggy was a resident of Oakwood for 45 years. She is survived by her children, Kathy Davis and husband Jeff Brown, Keith and Juanita Davis, Brian Davis and Corie Davis and husband Keeve Jaffe; grandchildren, Jael Jaffe, Rachael Jaffe, Nora Brown, Megan Hull and Ellen Hull; brothers and sisters-in-law, Daniel McCormick, Joseph and Rose McCormick and James and Bunnie McCormick; sister, Bernadette and husband Tom Winsen ; beloved sisters-law, Phyllis Edminston, Janice Davis and Nancy Nyrop and husband Richard and dearly beloved friends, Katie Pretzinger and Nancy Cauley and a host of nieces and nephews. Peggy was a childcare professional who loved her charges as her own and whose love was returned by the children of Sara and Jeff Martin, Charlie, Sam and Joey and by the children of Pam and Carlo McGinnis, Ann, Claire, Craig, Marie and Janie. She was an Oakwood Athletic Booster, Cub Scout and Campfire Leader and a Smith Elementary School and Epilepsy Association of Western Ohio volunteer.  Family will receive friends from 4-7:00 PM on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Mary Anne Eberhart  age 91, formerly of Youngstown, passed away January 15, 2007, at Sunrise Assisted Living of Oakwood, where she had been a very active resident for five years. Mary Anne was born on January 6, 1916 in Portsmouth, the daughter of John and Barbara (Kovacic) Baer. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Daniel Frederick Eberhart; and her daughter, Nancy Jean Eberhart. She is survived by daughter Linda (Roger) Williams of Oakwood; Three grandchildren: Jeaneen (John) Grismer of Dayton: Barbara (Kenneth) Mellenbruch of Minneapolis and Daniel (Sarah) Williams of Dayton; Five great-grandchildren: Joseph, Aimee, and Nicholas Mellenbruch; Kathryn Grismer and Alexander Williams. She was employed for many years by both Truscon Steel and Trailmobile Corp. of Youngstown, as a bookkeeper/accountant. Previously, Mary was a longtime member of St. Charles Catholic Church, 7345 Westview Drive, Youngstown. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Charles on Saturday, January 20; with a viewing held in the church welcoming area before the service. There was a graveside service following Mass at Calvary Cemetary.

Dorothy W. Frazer age 90 of Oakwood, passed away quietly in her sleep Saturday, January 20, 2007 at Lincoln Park Manor, four days before her 91st birthday.  She was born January 24, 1916 in Hamilton, Ohio.  She was preceded in death by her parents, the late Marc E. Welliver and Mable Barr Welliver; sisters, Ms. Betty Welliver and Mrs. Marcia Beckett, brother, Robert Welliver and her husband, retired Col. Andrew H. Frazer, U.S. Army reserve.  She is survived by her daughter, Anne Nelson of Kansas; four sons, Stuart (Bonnie) of Florida, Bruce and (Debbie) of Kettering, Robert (Donna) of Kettering, Marc (Tammy) of Beavercreek; sisters, Mrs. Virginia Sauer of Melbourne, Florida, Mrs. Barbara Howe of Middletown, and Mrs. Patricia Marshall of Middletown; brother, retired Capt. Marc (Buzz) Welliver, U.S. Coast Guard, of North Carolina; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren.  She was a graduate of Hamilton High School in 1933.  She attended San Diego State University as an art major where her favorite classmate was Gregory Peck. She loved being a homemaker, reading a good book, golfing, traveling, square dancing, quilting, and sewing doll cloths for her children.  A Memorial Service will be held  on Saturday, January 27th at 11 AM. at Tobias Funeral Home Ð Far Hills Chapel, 5471 Far    Hills Ave.  The family will receive friend from 10 AM until the time of service on Saturday.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Federation of the Blind, 1800 Johnson St., Baltimore, MD 21230. Albert J. “Bert” Smith, Jr., age 64, of Oakwood  passed away Sunday, January 7, 2007 at his home with his family by his side.  Bert was a graduate of Oakwood High School, attended Yale University and The Ohio State University.  Bert retired after 32 years of service at General Motors.  At the time of his retirement, he was the General Supervisor of the Physical Testing Lab.  He was a member of the Model A Ford Club and also a member of the General Motors Retiree Club.  Bert looked forward to his regular Wednesday lunches with friends and former co-workers. Bert enjoyed cars, Ohio State and Cleveland Browns football, NASCAR, and loved vacations on the water with his family surrounding him.  Bert was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Lib and Jud Smith, and his sister, Tacie Smith Aber. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Carol; children, Scott Justin Smith of Kettering, Elizabeth “Lisa” Suzanne (Jim) Corcoran of Beavercreek, and Molly Ann (Larry) Riggs of Centerville; grandchildren, Alexandria “Lexi” Leigh Corcoran, Justin James Corcoran and Dylan Michael Riggs; nephew, Stephen R. Aber, three nephews and a niece, as well as numerous cousins. Bert loved his grandbabies with all his heart.  Funeral services will be held Friday, January 12, 2007 at 1:00 PM at the Woodland Mausoleum, with Minister Keith Greer officiating. Charles E. Jay, age 83, retired architect of Oakwood, passed away at home on Wednesday, January 3rd.  He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Edwin Jay and Nelle (Martindale) Jay and a brother, Edwin D. Jay.  He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marjorie; two daughters, Julie McCracken of Del Mar, CA and Carrie Rogge of Kettering; a sister, Maryellen Wright of Celina, OH; a son-in-law, Lee McCracken; grandchildren, Leslie and Alex McCracken, and numerous nieces and great-nieces and nephews and great-nephews, and a host of dear friends.  A native of West Milton, OH, he graduated from Milton-Union High School and The Ohio State University, where he was a member of the marching band.  He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II and spent nearly three years overseas in England, France, and Belgium.  After college he worked for the architectural firm of Yount and Sullivan, which later became Sullivan, Lecklider and Jay (now known as the firm Pinnacle Architects).  His major architectural projects include Kettering Medical Center, the Dayton International Airport, Sinclair Community College (associate architects with the firm of Edward Durell Stone), buildings at Wright State University, Mead Data Center (Lexus-Nexus), libraries, schools, and corporate office buildings.  He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, serving as chapter president in 1972-1973.  He also was a member of the Engineers Club of Dayton and served on its Board of Governors, 1977-1980.  He played trumpet in the Kettering Civic Band for over 30 years and sometimes played with the TBDBITL alumni band at OSU, always returning to play and march with them on alumni reunion days at football games.  He was a member of Christ  United Methodist Church and a member of Masonic Lodge #577.  Memorial services will be held at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 East Stroop Road, Kettering, OH on Saturday, January 6th at 11 AM with the Rev. Don Frederick officiating.  There will be no visitation, and interment will be private.  The family will receive friends following the service.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Milton-Union  High School Scholarship Fund (c/o Milton-Union Alumni Association, Inc., P.O. Charlotte E. Bahl (Rogge) age 91, of Monroe, OH (formerly of Oakwood) passed away Thursday, December 28, 2006 at Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village. She was a member of Bellbrook Presbyterian Church. Charlotte was a 1933 graduate of Oakwood High School and attended Denison University. Charlotte was a leader for the Brownies and Girl Scouts, and was a “Tri Delt” at Denison. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross and Hospice of Dayton. Prior to getting married, Charlotte worked as a dental hygienist. Her family owned the Peerless Pantry, now known as the Peerless Mill Inn. Charlotte was an accountant with Dayton Wire Wheel, a family owned business. Charlotte was preceded in death by her infant son, Stephen, and her husband, Herbert, in 2003. She is survived by her 2 daughters, Sharon Gilmore and Leslie (Frank) Luhn; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at 10:00 AM at the Routsong Funeral Home, 6 Oakwood Ave. and Irving Ave. The Rev. Theresa Wood will be officiating. Leland V. “Junior” Norris, Jr. age 77, of Kettering, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at Miami Valley Hospital. Junior was a 1947 graduate of Fairmont High School and a charter member of the Kettering Fairmont Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1952, he received his B.S. Degree in Education from the University of Dayton, and served as captain of the 1952 UD Basketball team which included the trip to the NIT finals. From September 1953- June 1955, Junior was a teacher at Fairmont High School and coached basketball, baseball, and football. Junior served as the Montgomery County Clerk of Common Pleas Court from 1976 to 1988. Junior was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, the Masonic Lodge Riverview #7717 F&AM, Scottish Rite, A.A.S.R., Antioch Shrine Temple, the Flyer’s Club, a University of Dayton Varsity “D” Honorary Lifetime Member; member of the UD Athletic Hall of Fame, the Dayton Amateur Baseball Commission Hall of Fame and the Dayton Agonis Club. Junior was preceded in death by his parents, Leland Sr. and Gladys Norris, brother, Donald Norris and sister, Jean Crago. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Marilyn Norris; 4 children, Linda (Stuart) Petersen, Craig (Deb) Norris, John Norris and Patty (Bob) Baird; 3 grandchildren, Joe and John Norris and Lisa Petersen; 1 great-grandson, Joe Norris; 2 brothers, Edgar (Sharon) Norris and Ralph (Peg) Norris and sister, Marilyn Shoemaker as well as numerous nieces, nephews, close friends and former teammates. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at 10:00 AM at The Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 155 E. Thruston, Oakwood with The Rev. Gary Eichhorn officiating. Burial in David’s Cemetery.
