Bowman’s  celebrate 60th

Congratulations to Robert and Thelma Bowman of Kettering, who have just celebrated their 60th anniversary of marriage. Originally from Kentucky – Robert from Manchester, Thelma from Annville - they met while in high school through a mutual friend.

During WWII Thelma served as a secretary in an Army ammunition depot in Kentucky; Robert fought with the 442nd Japanese Combat Team in military campaigns in both Africa and Italy. After the war, the couple got together again. They married in 1947.

Thelma’s first job was teaching in a one-room schoolhouse that included students in all eight grades. In 1953 the couple moved to Dayton where Thelma began a 35-year teaching career at Beavercreek’s Beavertown Elementary School. Robert’s  career was in the insurance industry.

Though the couple has no children, they do have a God-daughter, Jamie Burkes, who lives in Columbus, Ohio.

When asked to what Robert attributes such a long and happy marriage, he said, “I sit down and listen and let her do all the talking.”

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 107  will be awarding the 2007 Citizen Service Award to William Hager on Monday, April 9 during their monthly meeting. The Citizen Service Award is awarded to people who support FOP members in a variety of ways. Among other things, Hager has been supportive of their efforts over the years by tirelessly promoting the effectiveness and responsiveness of the Oakwood Safety officers as police, medic and firefighters, playing the Easter Bunny at the Annual  FOP Easter Egg Hunt and donating some of his office furniture for them to use at their monthly meetings.

Golden Nugget diner to re-open April 2

After a major fire two years ago and a complete reconstruction of both the interior and exterior of the building, the landmark restaurant, The Golden Nugget, at the corner of West Dorothy Lane and South Dixie Drive is scheduled to reopen on Monday morning, April 2. A “full-house’ is expected throughout the day and a number of families have won seats in contests put on by some media outlets in the Miami Valley area.

Both the interior and exterior have undergone complete renovations with the front façade featuring an Art Deco-style turret in the classic diner style and the interior appears considerably more upscale than the previous restaurant.

Most of the same wait staff will be there and the “regulars” are expected to return with a vengeance. The diner boasts a following that goes back to the early 60’s.
