The National Spanish Honorary (Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica) recognizes high achievement in the study of the Spanish language. Students must have maintained three consecutive semester A’s in upper level Spanish classes and an overall 3.5 grade point average to be eligible for membership. This year 21 students were inducted into this prestigious honorary on Monday, March 12 in the library of Oakwood High School. Mrs. Elaine Long presided over the ceremony and President Patrick Murphy and Secretary Jillian Ellis conducted the initiation and presented “No hay que complicar la felicidad” by Marco Denevi. A video presentation of student commercials by Brad Thomas, Hallie Yarger, Derek McLachlan and Rachel Lehrner provide a light, comic interlude. The 2007 members are: Kristin Cobb, Sarah Deitz, Ginny Beth Fulford, Jennifer Hartel, Lilian Hartzell, Riley Hignite, Sean Huey, Austin Kellogg, Ashley Lynn, Sarah Maher, Derek McLachlan, Erin Requarth, Julia Sizek, Scott Slivken, Emily Steiner, Tiffany Taylor, Siobhan Tellez, Brad Thomas, Joe Vanderburgh, Kiley Wright and Hallie Yarger
The Oakwood School District is conducting five community meetings to inform the residents about the 1.8 mill Permanent Improvement Replacement Levy on the ballot May 8th. These meetings will begin with a question and answer period during which residents will hear what this levy is about, how it will help the district, and how passage of this levy will not increase their taxes. Participants will also tour the school to see first hand what was accomplished with the 2002 Bond Issue and what would be accomplished with the replacement of the Permanent Improvement Levy in May.
The meetings are scheduled as follows:
Tuesday, April 17th – Lange Elementary – 7:30 pm - Library
Wednesday, April 18th – Harman Elementary – 7:30 pm - Library
Tuesday, April 24th – Smith Elementary – 7:30 pm - Library
Monday, April 30th – Oakwood H.S./Junior High – 7:30 pm – Library
Tuesday, May 1st – Oakwood H.S./Junior High – 4:00 pm - Library
This Replacement Levy will not cost taxpayers more because the school district is able to lower the tax rate needed on the bonds sold after the Bond Levy in 2002.
This levy was originally passed by Oakwood voters in June 1978 and has been renewed by large margins five times since its original passage.
These meetings are being held to give residents the opportunity to visit their school buildings and see the infrastructure that needs to be maintained. Residents who have not visited our schools recently are especially encouraged to attend. If anyone has questions about the Replacement Levy or these scheduled meetings, they can contact Kevin Philo, the Oakwood School District’s Treasurer/Business Manager at 297-5332 or email kphilo@oakwood .k12.oh.us.
