Smith Gardens Perennial Sale April 20-21

The twenty-first annual Friends of Smith Gardens “Perennial Sale” will be held on Friday, April 20th and Saturday, April 21 at the Oakwood Community Center, 105 Patterson Road.  The hours are from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.  Over 100 varieties of plants will be available including perennials, hostas, ferns, herbs, ornamental grasses, daylilies and some annuals.

All plant material is Ohio grown, within a 100 miles of Dayton.  All of the growers are known for their excellent quality plants.  Plant material will be potted in 3”and 41/2” pots, quarts and gallon containers and will arrive in Oakwood the day of the sale so all the plants are fresh from the growers and the best of quality.

This fundraising event is open to the public with proceeds going to the care and maintenance of Smith Gardens.

Sunrise Easter Service at Carillon Park April 8

Carillon Historical Park and Greater Dayton Christian Connections are pleased topresent their annual Easter Sunrise Service at Deeds Carillon in Carillon Historical Park on Sunday, April 8 at 6:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to attend this ecumenical service.

Attendees should bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. Admission is free.

Col. and Mrs. Edward Deeds began the Easter Sunrise Service to give the community an opportunity to come together for a non denominational service.

This tradition was established in 1942 when Mrs. Deeds first played the Carillon as an opening for Easter ceremonies.

Week of Easter services at St. Paul’s

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, located at 33 W. Dixon Avenue in Oakwood, invites the community to celebrate Easter by attending our Holy Week services.

On Wednesday, April 4, we will conduct our regular Holy Eucharist at 9:15 a.m. We also will have the Tenebrae service at 6 p.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. The word “tenebrae” is Latin for shadows. The purpose of this service is to recreate emotional aspects of the passion story.  Please note:  childcare will not be offered during these services.

On Maundy Thursday, April 5, the service of Holy Eucharist takes place at 7 p.m.

On Good Friday, April 6, St. Paul’s will offer the Good Friday Liturgy at both 12:15 p.m. and at 6 p.m.  Please note: childcare will not be available during the 12:15 p.m. service.

The Easter Vigil service will take place at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 7.  The word vigil means “waiting and watching,” and the service has its roots in the early Christian community’s reliving of the night hours that Jesus’ friends spent keeping vigil by his tomb.  The service of Holy Eucharist and Baptism will be followed by a reception in the St. Paul’s Cloister.

On Sunday, April 8, we will celebrate Easter services at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m.  Between services, at 10:15 a.m., St. Paul’s will host an Easter Egg Hunt for the children who are age Toddler-Grade 4.  Children are encouraged to bring their own baskets for the hunt.  Childcare is offered at every service, except where noted. We hope you will join us!

If you have any questions, please contact Mike Wenclewicz at the Public Works Department at 298-0777.

Oakwood Avenue to be repaved north of Rt. 48

Sometime this spring, a city contractor will repave Oakwood Avenue from Five Points north to Irving Avenue/Springhouse Road. The project will take approximately three months to complete. After the street is repaved, the city will change the existing pavement markings to clearly delineate single lanes in each direction and to delineate left turn bays at Schantz Avenue.  Some on-street parking will change as well.

The city will conduct an informational meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10 for the purpose of explaining the project and answering questions. All property owners along this section of Oakwood Avenue received personal invitations to the meeting, but it is open to the public. The meeting will take place in the council chambers at the city building, 30 Park Avenue.

If you have any questions, contact Engineering and Public Works Director Kevin Weaver at 298-0777 (weaver@oakwood.oh.us)
