Rotary Readers at Smith School

A group of Oakwood Rotarians got involved in reading the book, “Andy and Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure” at Smith Elementary School recently. A copy of the hardcover book (by Miami Valley children’s book author, Andrew Shoup) was presented to each third grade child at Smith School to take home to their families. Shown in the picture are (L to R): back row: Jill Kollars, Jeff Blumer, Ted O’Conner, Gretchen Bullock, Jim Schmidt and Ann Snively; front row: Dick Stevens and Michael Vanderburgh.  (Photo taken by Melody Knostman of Smith Elementary School.)

Grants awarded by PTO to teachers and schools

Each year the PTO awards grants to teachers for items which are of benefit to the classroom and students but beyond the confines of the normal school budget.

This winter, Sara Feldmiller, PTO Teachers’ Grant Chair, awarded Mr. Loomis a grant for additional copies of a lunchtime math game, Blokus, for which students come in to play voluntarily during their lunch.  The game improves math and social skills.  Ann Whitehair received monies for books to enhance the SILR program.  Jen Lohmeyer received a generous donation which she will combine with other funds to purchase an elliptical machine.  Grant totals for Winter were $1,530.

In the Fall, grants were awarded for our Foreign Language department for the purchase of a Karaoke system to enhance the learning experience. In Science, the PTO grants helped purchase a USB Video Microscope used in biology and forensic science classes.  In addition, monies were used to acquire a mannequin and accessories for use in forensic science classes.  And finally for Science, grant funds were used to purchase Planispheres; previously there were not enough planispheres for each student to have one to work with exclusively.  The Yearbook and Newspaper staffs were awarded grants for software licenses, in part for use with a digital camera donated by Dr. Kronour. The Art department was awarded a grant for a digital camera, the Junior High English department received a grant to continue the “Memory Projects of Hope”, a creative writing service/learning project, and a grant was given to Junior High Guidance staff to fund incentives to be used as gifts by the Lumber Jacks Leaders to promote citizenship, good character, and positive interdependence among students.

The total amount granted in the Fall was $5,617. Students will certainly benefit from all of these purchases, and we applaud the continued creativity and commitment our teachers show when planning the most positive educational and social experiences possible.
