The Oakwood varsity baseball jacks ran their league record to 3-0 with recent home wins over Bellbrook and Valley View.
Early against Bellbrook it was the Mitch Jones show, as the senior pitcher mowed down the Eagles batters in the 1st and 2nd innings, and then it was Jones who got Oakwood on the scoreboard with a two run HR in the home second. This incited a frenzy of hitting as the Jacks scored 6 more in the 2nd and 5 in the 3rd to take full command of the game.
Pitching with the lead, Jones challenged the Eagles to hit his pitches, and he went on to hold Bellbrook to 5 earned runs while his teammates added more runs each inning. Freshman pitcher Greg Amborse came on to relieve Jones and protected the hard earned lead, giving up only a single 5th inning run. By that time, Oakwood led 17-8, and senior designated hitter Brian Ditmer mercifully ended it with a line drive RBI single to right to plate the 18th run for the walk off run rule victory. Other hitting stars included junior Chris Hardy (triple, 3RBI’s, 2 runs), junior Josh Parrish (single, HR, 2 RBI, 4 runs), senior Kris Soward (3 hits and 3 runs), junior Andrew Carpenter and senior Jesse Kell (2 runs each), and Jones also doubled in another RBI later in the game.
Thursday Parrish pitched 6 exciting innings against Valley View. Early Lumberjack errors spotted the Spartans 2 unearned runs in the 1st, but then the junior right-hander retired the next 10 batters and allowed only one more hit and 1 earned run through 6. At the plate it was Andrew Carpenter’s day to shine brightly. The junior shortstop had homered in the 1st and singled in the 3rd, but the Jacks had stranded six runners and still trailed 3-1 in the 5th inning. Junior right fielder Ben Scott brought the fans to their feet when he lined the first pitch of the home 5th into the left field bleachers, and then two pitches later Carpenter blasted his 2nd long ball of the game to tie it at 3. The Jacks weren’t done though, as senior Matt Vail singled and Soward doubled for the RBI. In the 6th sophomore catcher Tony Lamb and Hardy led off with walks and scored on RBI efforts by Vail and Parrish. Carpenter then came on to relieve Parrish in the 7th and yielded only 1 meaningless run for the save as the Jacks prevailed 6-4.
Oakwood’s record is now 7-3. This week the Jacks host Belmont Friday at 5 p.m. and have road games at Brookville Wednesday, Franklin Thursday and Northridge Saturday.
