Donovan awarded MVCA scholarship

The Miami Valley Counseling Association is proud to announce that Tina Donovan is the winner this year of the MVCA $750 scholarship.  Tina is a resident of Oakwood and attends the University of Dayton in the Community Counseling Program to soon complete her Master’s degree there.

Tina has a life-long passion for youth and that has been a major focus for her both personally and professionally.  Tina has witnessed an increase in crime and violence over the past five years in her work with the court system.  This prompted her interest in the emotion of anger and led her to write a bibliotherapy story called “Sparky Tales.”

This effort created by Tina assists children in coping with their anger in a positive, healthy manner.  Tina has taken the message on the road and tested the effectiveness of the story and activity-based, anger-management curriculum for second graders by presenting this bibliotherapy intervention at a local elementary school and also at South Community Inc.’s Partial Hospitalization Program for severely emotionally disabled children. Also, two counselors have clinically tested “Sparky Tales” and both reported seeing positive results.  Tina is pursuing publication of “Sparky Tales”.

The Miami Valley Counseling Center offered three scholarships to graduate counseling students who possess exceptional potential in the counseling profession.  These scholarships are part of the Wray Reiger Memorial Scholarships, in memory of one of our own influential counselors at Jefferson Township, Wray Reiger, whose contributions to the field are highly regarded.  The other two winners are Marianne Ruggles who was awarded a $250 scholarship and is also an Oakwood resident and graduate student at UD and Robin Fisher was awarded a $250 scholarship and is a graduate student at Wright State University and lives in Centerville, Ohio.

School building tours to highlight need for levy

Monday, April 30 – OHS./Junior High – 7:30 p.m. – Library
