OHS senior Kris Soward pitched a no hitter.
The Oakwood Varsity baseball team is hot, winning six of their last eight games. Unfortunately those losses were to league rivals Eaton and Franklin.
Monday the Jacks were well positioned when they overcame a three-run deficit to Eaton. Senior left fielder Mitch Jones and sophomore catcher Tony Lamb smashed RBI singles to forge the tie after six, however three Oakwood errors and a walk helped the visiting Eagle to score five seventh inning runs to send the Jacks to an 11-6 defeat Wednesday at Brookville Jones starred on the mound and at the plate. The right-hander needed only eighty-one pitches for the complete game victory. He yielded just one run on five hits and a walk while ringing up five strikeouts. At the plate Jones homered, singled, walked, scored in two runs and knocked in two… but he had plenty of help en route to the 10-1 win. Junior shortstop Andrew Carpenter had three hits and two RBIs, senior third baseman Matt Vail slashed two hits and scored twice, junior right fielder Josh Parrish doubled, singled, scored one and had an RBI, and Lamb tripled in a run and scored once.

Andrew Carpenter #24, hits home run at Valley View.
Thursday at Franklin Parrish locked in a pitcher’s dual and in six innings gave up only three runs on six hits to the powerful Wildcat lineup. The Jacks, however, couldn’t score until two outs in the seventh inning when Carpenter coaxed a bases loaded walk and Vail shot a screamer into left center for the tying RBIs to send the game into extra innings. When the Jacks added three more in the eighth, the game seemed secure, but the Wildcats took advantage of lax Lumberjack defense to score three of their own in the bottom of the eighth. Oakwood pitching remained solid but the Jacks would not score again and Franklin eventually won 7-6 in ten innings to run their league leading record to 6-0.
On Friday, Oakwood stepped out of the league schedule to host D-II Belmont. Senior Jesse Kell was awarded his second start on the mound and he responded with a gem. The crafty right-hander allowed only two harmless singles, struck out four and one earned run in the run rule shortened 12-2 win. Kell’s pitches moved so well that he did walk five and hit two, but it was that movement that kept batters off balance all afternoon. The Lumberjacks started slowly and only led 2-0 in the fourth but then they erupted for ten runs to put it away. Junior right fielder Ben Scott led the barrage with three hits, two runs, and three RBIs. Other big sticks included Vail (three hits and two RBIs), senior DH Brian Ditmer (single, double, 3 RBIs) and junior left fielder JT Allen (single, walk, one RBI, one run), while Carpenter and Jones each doubled and scored two runs.
This week the Jacks travel to Bellbrook Wednesday and Valley View Friday.
