The Oakwood Jills varsity softball team returned from the Northridge Invitational Softball Tournament on Saturday, April 21 as Tournament champions. The team, coached by varsity coach Scott Herman, had a total of 28 hits and 25 runs in the two-games tournament.

Oakwood opened game one against the Meadowdale Lady Lions, with starting pitcher Cathryn Hardy throwing for the first three innings with six strike outs. Riley Hignite stepped in for innings four and five to strike out four more batters for the win. The final score was Oakwood 15, Meadowdale 2.
Cathryn Hardy took the mound to start game two against the Northridge Lady Bears. Riley Hignite came in to relieve Hardy after an injury and held Northridge scoreless, stalling the Lady Bears at eight runs for the two final innings of the game. At the top of the seventh, with Oakwood down by two runs, Cathryn Hardy started off the inning with a home run. The Jills rallied with three more runs on five hits, allowing Oakwood to go ahead for the victory. Third baseman Ellie Rodebeck, had the game winning hit with Lauren Luther scoring the game winning RBI. Luther went two for four in game two, and Courtney Pearce had a 12-pitch at bat in the sixth, sending off six powerful fouls and wearing down the Northridge pitcher. The Jills defense prevented Northridge from scoring in the top of the seventh, allowing Oakwood to come back with strong bats and win the game 10-8.
Jennifer Wuebker was named Most Valuable Player for the tournament, with a stellar performance behind the plate as catcher, batting five for nine, and bringing in three RBIs. Wuebker delivered two key put-outs, with one in the final inning of the championship game when she threw out a runner at second base to give the Jills the first critical two outs in the top of the seventh.
Catching in game one and playing first in game two, Haley Biteman, was six for eight in the tournament, scoring a total of three runs. Ali Botello, playing defense at second base and shortstop, was six for nine with an on-base percentage of .700. Going 5 for 9, Rodebeck scored three runs with two doubles, and Riley Hignite was three for seven in the tournament.
Coach Scott was delighted with the win: “I am really proud of this team. This was a total team effort. All the girls are really coming together, building skills, and gaining a lot of confidence. They have worked very hard, and we are starting to see the results.”

The OHS boy’s varsity baseball team closed out its regular season schedule last week with games against Brookville and West Carrollton.
Friday was senior recognition day and the 8 seniors were recognized in a ceremony before the game against Brookville. It was a warm hearted and nostalgic farewell, and that might have taken away part of the competitive edge as the Jacks started slowly and found themselves trailing 4-0 by the middle of the second inning. Junior pitcher Josh Parrish had already given up 4 hits and a walk, but seamed to settle into a groove after that, regaining his usual dominate style and limited the Bluedevils to just 3 more singles, a walk and no runs for the rest of the game. Unfortunately the offense took a little longer to get untracked, and the Lumberjacks still trailed 4-0 in the bottom of the 5th. Doubles by junior center fielder Chris Hardy and senior 3rd basemen Matt Vail sandwiched around a single by junior shortstop Andrew Carpenter produced 2 5th inning runs but the Jacks went down meekly in the 6th so still trailed 4-2 entering their last at bat in the 7th. Carpenter’s 1 out triple was followed by a sharp single by Vail and a double by Parrish to score one run, placing the tying run at 3rd and potential winning tally at 2nd. It was time for seniors to step up and that they did. Senior right fielder Mitch Jones battled deep into the count then launched a long fly ball to right field to easily score pinched runner J.T. Allen to tie the game at 4 with 2 outs, bringing Kris Soward to the plate. Soward had already singled twice in this game and had to be surprised when Brookville elected to pitch to him with first base open, and when he lined a second pitch to left field for the game winning single the near capacity crowd erupted with jubilation over the 5-4 win.
As if to prove this was no fluke, the Jacks hosted the West Carrollton Pirates on Saturday. Both teams hit the ball hard early, but the score was still tied at 2 when the Jacks came to bat in the bottom of the 4th. In an incredibly improbable fashion the first 6 Jacks batters that inning each slammed line drive hits on the first pitch they saw, scoring 5 runs on just 6 pitches! The damage probably would have been worse had the Pirates right fielder not made a fine running grab of a Matt Vail drive to right followed by a spectacular double play to quash the rally. As quickly as they grabbed that 7-2 lead, it evaporated when the Pirates erupted for seven 5th inning runs, highlighted by a pair of 3 run home runs after the Jacks had opened the inning with several errors. West Carrollton eventually built the lead to 3 runs before the Jacks opened the 6th inning with 4 straight hits, closing the score to 10-9 with Josh Parrish at the plate. Parrish had ended the last rally with that fateful double play, and was determined to do better this time. When the Private pitcher hung a curve out over the plate Parrish made good on his intentions, crashing a 3 run home run for a 12-10 lead which the Jacks would never relinquish. The hit parade continued and Oakwood eventually tallied 15 runs before the dust settled, for the 15-11 win. Other hitting stars this game included Hardy (3 hits, homerun, 4 RBI’s) and sophomore catcher Tony Lamb has his first 4 hit game with a double, triple and 2 RBI’s.
Coach Eric Oberding used the nightcap to get some players in different positions. Though the Jacks fell to the Pirates by an eventual 7-1 score, it was a positive atmosphere since the Jacks realized they really had nothing more to prove than tune up for the upcoming tournament.
The Lumberjacks are 17-8 overall, 8-4 in SWBL, tied for 2nd place. Oakwood is seeded 3rd in Division III, was awarded a 1st round bye and will host a second round game Thursday at 5 p.m.
The Junior Varsity baseball team finished the 2007 season with an 11-8 record. The defense was strong this year. Coaches Joel Douglas and Bob Morgan were vaguely surprised whenever any fly ball was not caught or a grounder made it through the infield. A very competitive Ben Quinn parlayed his strong disinclination to throw any pitch that was not very near or over the plate into a 1.39 earned run average and a 5-1 record. Tyler Philo swung back and forth between varsity and reserve but still
managed to win 2 games for the reserves with 33 strikeouts in 23 innings and a 1.21 earned run average. Freshman Ben Roess showed a great deal of promise, pitched in 6 games and finished with a record of 2 wins and 2 losses.
Offensively we had more outstanding hitters than the antiquated assistant coach can remember seeing on a reserve team. Freshmen Scott Harman and Corey Bohache batted .453 and .371 respectively. Several sophomores are going to make coach
Eric Oberding’s job very interesting next season as they join an already outstanding varsity team. Kyle Kissock played outstanding defense and hit a solid .439. Jack McIntyre may be the best defensive first baseman we’ve had in generations and hit .415, while pitcher Tyler Philo played an excellent third base while hitting .409. Outfielders Andrew Morris, John Whalen, and Justin Reeder caught everything in sight, ran the bases very well, and batted .293, .265, and .280 respectively.
