Schedule of Events

That Day in May, this year being held on Saturday, May 19,  packs a number of activities into one day of fun and celebration. Now in its 32th year, this special “day” has become a signature celebration sponsored by both the City of Oakwood and the Oakwood Rotary Club.

As always, That Day in May is heralded by a music concert in the Oakwood High School Stadium, sponsored by the Oakwood Fraternal Order of Police. For tickets or ticket information call 284-8212. In case of rain the concert will be held in the high school auditorium.

Saturday’s schedule, a full day of activities, is listed below:

  • Chalk Drawing Contest Afternoon Shafor Blvd. near Baseball Field
  • Displays & Refreshments 12 Noon - 4 p.m. Green Space - OHS Stadium

Oakwood Fun Run, 5K and 10K

The 32th annual Oakwood “That Day in May” Run will begin at 8:30 a.m Saturday, May 19, between the Oakwood High School and the Oakwood football field. Three “runs” are scheduled - a Fun Run, the 5K Run and the 10K Run. All three courses are certified, scenic and challenging.

Registration begins at 7:15 a.m. and closes promptly at 8:30 a.m. for the Fun Run and at 8:45 a.m. for the 5K and 10K Runs.

There are 11 age divisions for men and six age divisions for women runners. Award will go to the to three overall men’s ad women’s and the top three in each age division.

The cost for the 5K and 10K runs is $20. The Fun Run is free, or $10 with a T-shirt. ORRRC no shirt special: $10 (must show ORRRC card at packet pick up) Registration forms   are available at the Oakwood Community Center.

New Chalk Drawing Contest

New this year for “That Day In May” activities is a chalk drawing contest. Use your imagination and creativity. Come up with an idea and start drawing. It is for all ages with prizes for children and adults. The entry fee is $2 for a child and $5 for an adult. The  contest will be held on Shafor Boulevard between Spirea and Dellwood near the Oakwood High School baseball fields. This event promises to be a fun event!

The Oakwood Register sponsors a That Day in May Float Contest

As a part of the ‘That Day in May’ parade on May 19th there will be a neighborhood or group float contest.  All neighborhoods or groups are invited to get together and design a float for the ‘That Day in May’ parade.  The theme this year is “We Love a Parade!”  

Something new has been added this year – a chance to build and enter a float in the TDIM Parade.  Prizes will be awarded for first and second place. Get together with your neighbors, school chums, a church group, family(ies)…add your imagination and enter this year’s first Float Contest.

First Prize is a Pine Club Cookout, with dessert from Ashley’s and Ben & Jerry’s. Second Prize is a group bowling party at Capri Lanes.

Line up for the parade begins around 11:30 a.m. on Shafor Boulevard near Dorothy Lane Market.  If interested in entering the float contest, please contact Shaun Roberts, 643-0521 or email SRobertsmediator@aol.com.  Entry deadline is May 11, 2007.

Rotary Silent Auction

Don’t miss out. ‘That Day In May’ Rotary Silent Auction will take place Saturday, May 19, 2007 along with the rest of the  festivities planned for this anual community event. The silent auction will take place in the hallway near the Oakwood High School Cafeteria and will run from 8 am to 1 pm. There are a lot of items to bid on which includes over 20+ gift baskets, Dayton Dragon’s tickets, hot air balloon ride for 2, pictures, antiques, jewelry, architectural consultation services, Lake Erie weekend on sail boat, dinner for 12, 25” TV, handyman services, books, certificates from local businesses, limo ride, CD player, prints, paintings, Michigan Football game tickets, one hour flight instruction, oriental rug, patio planters, 14” Screen TV, gold and dinner for 4 at the Dayton Country Club, legal consultation, Dayton Dragon’s Box for 15, and lots, lots more. Value of items is over $8,500.

Oakwood Boosters Spirit Shop at TDIM

Spread your Oakwood spirit all year long. On May 19 at “That Day in May,” the Oakwood Athletic Boosters Spirit Shop will be open for business with several spring and summer clothing items available at special prices. Get your Oakwood shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops just in time for summer and show your school spirit! Look for the Boosters table from 12 noon to 4 p.m. in the fields behind the football stadium.
