Despite less practice time due to high water and unseasonably cold weather, local rowers of the Greater Dayton Rowing Association brought home both gold and silver medals from the Oakridge Dogwood Invitational regatta, held in Oakridge, Tennessee on April 28, 2007.
The regatta was attended by 41 clubs from 24 cities and 9 states. “This is a great start to our sprint season,” said Charlie Doyle, GDRA Junior Rowing coach. “Some of our experienced rowers placed well but others—only novices at this point—held their own in their races as well.”
Adult rowers from GDRA also competed in the regatta. The following are those who placed in their 2,000-meter sprint events.

Coming into last Monday’s Division II battle between two of the area’s top tennis teams, it was anyone’s guess as to how it would play out. Oakwood had lost only once to a Division II school, a heartbreaker against Miami Valley without Oakwood’s number two player in the lineup. Oakwood was just coming off a rousing victory over perennial state powerhouse Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy. C-J was undefeated against local D II competition, including wins over Miami Valley and Alter.
C-J took the first and second singles positions (Joe Piechota over Addison Wille, 6-2, 6-3 and Conrad Klank over Brittany White, 6-2, 6-0), while Greene and Wang of Oakwood defeated Quill and Holmes at first doubles, 6-3, 6-4. That left the team score at 2-1 in favor of C-J.
At the conclusion of those first three matches, both the third singles and second doubles matches were entering a decisive third set. Nate Wallace of C-J had lost the first set to Isaac Hong 6-4, but came back to win the second 6-3. Wallace’s backboard consistency kicked in, and he prevailed at the third singles position in the third set 6-2. The second doubles position went more deeply into the third set, with Harris and Schumacher of Oakwood losing to Holmes and Iberico of C-J 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
It was a tough 4-1 loss for Oakwood and a rare win for C-J over a team that has often achieved the top ranking in Division II tennis in the Dayton area. The Lumberjacks continued their competition in the state team tournament with a match against Tipp City on Monday (May 14). Joe Piechota and Lucas Iberico are Oakwood residents.
