Colonial Revival on Oakwood Avenue

WHATTA-DAY-IN-MAY !!!  First-off – it began with a beautiful morning and a big crowd of participants in the 5K and 10K RACE which began and ended at the High School Athletic Field.  The winner of the Men’s Division was Ben Forman.  And the winner of the Women’s Division – was Ann Williams.  Frank Clemens took first in the Fun Run. After the races, the crowds headed for the cafeteria of the Oakwood High School for the Oakwood ROTARY’S Pancake Breakfast.  Well, almost everyone headed to breakfast – leaving Tom Routsong  to dismantle the speaker system on the track.

Coming from breakfast and out the south-side-door of the high school there was a little  Oakwood trash-collection-three-wheeler having a difficult time backing into a parking spot.  The ‘driver’ was wearing a Rotary shirt and when he spotted his ‘audience’ he just turned off the ignition and got out.  The ‘driver’ was Oakwood City Manager Norbert Klopsch.   “Well, I didn’t hit that wall – or that new van did I?”
he asked.

Jack Wagner reported the  PARADE  was forming on Shafer Avenue and Orchard was supposed to begin by 12:00 noon.  So, hundreds headed south to watch the logistics of organizing hundreds of paraders, trucks, tractors, convertibles, fire engines, signs, marching bands, police cars from all over the area…..”Every house and garage in Oakwood must be empty!” remarked one spectator.’

Mike Kelly, former Oakwood City Manager, was the GRAND MARSHALL of the parade – so his convertible led off. The fabulous Oakwood High School Marching Band was next…and then the Oakwood High School football team, and the wrestling team, and the cheerleaders, and acrobats, and the Boy Scouts, and the Cub Scouts, and a great Bagpipe Band, and Mayor Judy Cook, and Vice Mayor Carlo McGinnis,  and John Gray driving a John Deere tractor, and Stan Castleman driving a 1918 Ford Truck, and Sally Riffle waving and Sally Solarek driving…and a 30’s
fire engine, and…and a handsome ’48 Cadillac…

Participants were tossing wrapped candy, favors, tiny footballs, lolli-pops,… the children on the curb were diving for the treats and counting their ‘loot’. The PARADE was over a half hour long….and one of the best ever – specially since spectators knew the paraders and  received a wave in return for their cheers!

Dance Group’s Spring Dance was at Moraine Country Club on Friday evening.  The May party always has a big turn-out for members are back from Florida and the “…haven’t seen you since last fall”… is oft repeated.

Dr. Jim & Doneece Sheridan had their usual table with friends Dr. Ken Pohl & Angela, and Katy Common. Marty & Fred Ohmer, Bob & Marty Wind, Tom & Nancy Gillaugh, Wise Glossinger & Dotty Bachus, and Bud & Aileen Welch filled a near-by table. Aileen got ‘raves’ on her new hair cut.  Blitz & Mary Creager had fun reminiscing about the old Charlie Seville estate where “…my father and I  rode years
ago”, added one in the group.

Laurie Streit got lots of compliments on her black and white gown.  Dr. John & Jane Mitikides, Bill & Ginny Cuthbertson, Dr. Kent & Wendy Scholl, Dr. Art & Jean Boc, Harry & Marty Ebeling were there. Michael & Barbara Frank, Jon & Marilyn Hart`, and Bob Lowden, Harold & Cherriann chatted between dances.  The group enjoyed the music of ‘The Knights of Rhythm’.  “It’s terrific to hear the music of the 40’ and 50’s…it’s so ‘danceable!”

Don & Correne Moran, Wayne & Betty Morse, Dale & Aldene Nash, and Walter & Pat Porter  were table-hopping and having fun.  Bill & Lorrie Quinlivan,  Jim & Rena Roberts, and Ed  & Rosie Reagan, and Roger & Lois Sutherland did find their assigned tables.

Lee & Sudy Wiedeke, Sergio & Lynn Alejandrino, and Earl & Betty Holton were having fun.  Betty was chair. of  the party and was told by all “…what a wonderful evening!”
