Colonial Revival on Oakwood Avenue

4 top track finishers headed to regional meet

The Oakwood High School track team started down the path toward Jesse Owens’ Memorial Stadium last Thursday and Saturday, competing in the Dayton District Division II meet held at Welcome Stadium. In the finals the top four finishers move on to the regional meet next Thursday and Saturday also at Welcome Stadium.

The top finisher for the Jill’s, and only one of two runners who finished in first ahead of Kettering Archbishop Alter, was Julia Sizek who finished first in the 3200m run. Dani Reese finished second in the 1600m run setting a new Oakwood High School record at 5:15.17. Reese finished third in the 800m run and also anchored two relays: the second place finishing 4x800m relay with Sizek, Lucy Schafer, and Liz Whalen; and the fourth place finishing 4x400m relay with Schafer, Laura German, and Whalen. Senior Liz Whalen also qualified for next weeks regional with a fourth place finish in the 800m run. Other Jills who placed were Shannon Hallinan who was sixth in the 1600m run, Shafer fifth in the 400m dash, and Liz Connelly sixth in the 3200m run. The Jills finished fifth place in the team standings.

The top finisher from the Jacks was Freshman Peter Hix, who proved his record setting SWBL Conference Meet performance was for real by finishing second in the 1600m run at 4:34.85, only a second and a half slower than last week. Jake Mays finished third in the discus with at throw of 146-07 and seventh in the shot put. Jason Hewer finished fourth in the 3200m run and will be running again next week. The Jack’s 4x800m relay team of Nathan Thomas, Gabe Svobodny, Tristan Schnader and Peter Hix finished fifth. The 4x400m relay team with Ben Hogan, Hix, Sean Huey and anchored by Nathan Thomas also finished fifth. The Jacks finished eighth in the team standings.

Note that Mr. Hix’s 1600m run time for the SWBL Conference meet was 4:33.40, not 5:33:40 as I wrote last week. My apologies.

Jacks baseball scores 12-11 walk-off win

The Oakwood boy’s varsity baseball team was awarded a #3 seed in the post-season tournament as a reward for their 17-8 regular season record.  The Jacks drew a 1st round bye and hosted the 4th seeded Carlisle Indians (16-8) overall.

Senior Kris Soward started on the mound for the Jacks and did well until the 3rd when a 2 out fielding error opened the gates and let in 3 unearned runs.  The Jacks responded with a rampage in their half of the 3rd as centerfielder Chris Hardy “took one for team” right in the side and junior shortstop Andrew Carpenter blasted a homer to left.  The Jacks weren’t done however, as singles by junior Josh Parrish and seniors Matt Vail, Soward and Mitch Jones plated 2 runs and senior outfielder Jesse Kell matched the entire Carlisle score with a no doubter 3 run home run high over the stands behind left center field.

Josh Parrish starred on the mound and at the plate for Oakwood against Carlisle: Parrish smashed 4 base hits and gave up no earned runs in 7 innings of spectacular relief.

Fourth year coach Eric Oberding felt relief help for Soward on the mound would be timely…but Carlisle jumped on the Lumberjack reliever with 5 straight base runners capped by a grand-slam homer for six runs to jump to a 9-7 lead, and still no outs!  Oberding then turned to Parrish to stem the hemorrhage of scoring, and the junior right-hander responded with his best effort of the season.  Parrish shut Carlisle out the rest of regulation on only one hit, and in one stretch retired 11 straight batters!

Oakwood had trouble getting back in the scoring column though, and still trailed 9-7
in the 6th when Soward and Jones walked and moved up on sophomore Tony Lambs sacrifice where Hardy knocked them in with a single to center to send the game to extra innings.  Parrish wavered slightly in the 8th, allowing 2 unearned runs on only 1 hit.  The Jacks were down to their final out with one on base when Carpenter drew a walk, and again consecutive hits by Vail, Parrish, Soward and Jones tied the score at 11. From that point Parrish assumed complete control and pitched hitless ball in the 9th and 10th.

Finally in the 10th won when Carpenter doubled, Parrish singled him to 3rd and Soward sacrificed him home for the 12-11 walk-off win to send the jubilant Lumberjack faithful home happy.
