Washington Township firefighting crew.
Over the course of the past several weeks, Washington Township Fire Department crews have been able to utilize a building located at 5540 Far Hills Avenue donated by Ferneding Insurance for firefighter training. This enabled crews to enhance their skills in search, rescue, hose line deployment, wall breaching, overhaul techniques, roof ventilation, forced entry and numerous other exercises. Depicted in some of the photos a crew is conducting a roof ventilation exercise which allows heat to escape and curbs the potential for “back-drafts.”
According to Fire Chief, Ken Parks, “The training received from the use of the building has proven to be invaluable.” Per Dan Ferneding, “Not only will these exercises potentially reduce insurance claim expenses, but ultimately and more importantly save lives – both of firefighters and citizens.” The building will be demolished and Ferneding Insurance will construct a new building in its place to better accommodate the expanding needs of the agency and its clients. Ferneding Insurance is currently located at 533 E. Stroop Road in Kettering. The agency was founded in 1950 by John C. Ferneding.
