'Willow Grove'

Last weekend Dr. Ludolph Van der Hoeven, an Oakwoodite, and most admired amateur pianist, was soloist with the Bryn Mawr Chamber Music Orchestra. “I played two of my most favorite compositions…the 3rd movement of a Brahms concerto, and the 2nd movement of a Chopin concerto.”

“Bryn Mawr is a beautiful suburb of Philadelphia…did Francene go with you? Dot Landis, your fellow resident of ‘The Carillon’, mentioned your concert…”

“Yes Francene was with me. I was pleased with the praise I received from the Chamber Music orchestra members …such musicians are always tough and outspoken critics!”

“We still miss you as neighbors across Houk Stream and the times you’ve played for us in that magnificent Gardener House drawing room.”  (Every old manse in Oakwood is known by the name of the original owner – no matter if you’ve owned
the house for fifty years!

And another ‘Carillon’ resident had some interesting news to report.   Milly Hubler and her daughter Holly (Oakwood H.S. grad) have returned from a trip to the Amazon Rain Forest and the Galapagos Islands of Equador.  “Holly’s completed her third year as a U.S. Dept. of State Foreign Service employee in the Dominican Republic.  Her next post is in Paris where she’ll serve as Assistant to the Honorable Louise Oliner, Ambassador to the U.S. Mission to UNESCO.”

The running controversy  between the Wright Brothers Family Foundation and the Neighborhood Residents and the Oakwood Planning Commission, and the fate of Hawthorn Hill… has been ‘covered’ in great detail.  Again the issue is ‘tabled’ and…tune in again in sixty days for… details at eleven.  Channel 7 was there.

The City’s chambers were filled for the most recent meeting.  Joan Chambers was an early arrival. Michelle Hogan Reeder, Shirley Murphy, Rob Connelly, Irv Bieser, the Tony Huffmans, Mary Matthews, and of course Steve Wright and his sister, Amanda Lane.

Bill & Cynthia Butt,  Marlene Maimon, Judy Cook, Marv & Laurie Keller were all part of the sell-out crowd.  Unfortunately, none of the speakers could be heard… there seemed to be no amplification even though mikes were in evidence. Fortunately, OPC Chair Bill Kendell was clearly understood.

“Fiesta Under The Stars” read the colorful invitation.  “Join the American Institute of Wine & Food at a poolside fiesta featuring the music, food, and wine of Latin America…on Friday the 22nd at the home of Dr. John & Jane Mitakides,  Split Rail Road…”

Reading the menu causes  ‘mouth watering’.  The instructions read:  Casual dress – sombreros optional.
