'Willow Grove'

Not until Sunday’s edition of the  ‘New York Times’, along with the TV news program ‘Sunday Morning’, did we locals realize we were actually ahead of the curve – news wise!   The Sunday NYTimes had a feature on amateur jazz musicians eligible for the AARP who are going strong.  They’re rehearsing every Thursday night in garages and playing ‘gigs’ on weekends – and many are stock brokers,  lawyers, etc.  The TV ‘Sunday Morning’ show featured Bob Segar who’s sixty three and is more in demand than ever for national concerts. His ‘Live Bullet’ album is on top of the ‘lists’.  “Yeah, we’ve gone from station wagons to jets!”

Well, last Friday noon some ‘locals’ met for their weekly lunch at ‘Limbo’s’ on W. Monument.  Dayton lawyer, recently retired, Bill McLaren, brought his daughter, Pam and her husband Alton Lott who’d driven in from the Kansas City area to spend Fathers Day.  Pam is the principal of KC school – and an alumna of Fairview High School. And Alton,  (here’s the reason for this…) is one of the countries top rated ‘Rockabilly’ stars!  He’s just off a ‘gig’ in Wisconsin – “…the biggest rock concert in the USA.

“Rock is more popular in Europe now than in the US.  I’ve just been invited to a series of concerts in England and in Spain.”

Alton gave ‘Round Town’ one of his CD’s and when he pulled it out of a large envelope one could see lots of ‘glossies’.  “Let us see those pictures…” and they were fascinating.  And, one of the photos was of Alton and Bob Seger!  “Yeah, we just played together in Wisconsin.  Bob still lives in Detroit.”

“And we’ve been having lunch with you several times each year and you’ve never told us anything about your fabulous career!  And Bill McLaren and Pam and Jack Heck are teepee-pole cousins!”

(Additional news item re:  Limbo’s)

The Limbo’s Lunch Crowd just learned the owner has sold the property – the restaurant is in an old Victorian house.   The restaurant will close June 28th!  The old house will be razed.  What will   all those down-town-lawyers do for lunch?

Humane Society news.  The Furry Skurry raised $47,000 which will go to funding their animal care, spay/neuter services, and animal neglect programs.  Over 1,200 people and their pets walked in the event!

‘Top Dog’ winner:  ‘George’ 3 year old Shepard mix and a ‘shelter’ dog. Owned by Kelly Vance.

‘Cutest Dog’ winner:  ‘Max’ 3 year old Terrier mix. Owned by Denise Wysong.
‘Dog/Owner Look Alike:  ‘Sammy’ 9 month old Glab (Golden Retriever & Black Lab mix).  Owned by Lisa McCune.
