Four Oakwood High School students took second place in the High School Division in a field of students from 15 counties in a Stock Market Simulation contest which concluded recently through the Center for Economic Education held at Wright State University. Lead by OHS School Advisor Jamie Walker, senior Airi O’Brien, junior Ashley Lynn, senior Matt Kearns and senior Nick Rudy bested 167 teams in the competition.
Each of the student teams is given $100,000 in play money to invest,” said D.R. Fannin, who directs the CEE. “They develop and manage a portfolio to learn the basic economics of buying and selling through a stock exchange.”
In the case of the OHS team, they yielded a $11,804 profit from the multiple transactions undertaken during the contest. Coming out ahead of the OHS team with first place was Wilmington High School that barely edged out Oakwood with $11,884 – a mere $80 difference.
The winning teams received cash prizes at a campus luncheon. Included was a tour of the new MTC Technologies Training Center, which replicates a Wall Street environment for Wright State business students.
The Oakwood Schools Education Foundation will host its third annual golf outing fundraiser Sept. 24 at the Dayton Country Club. Kevin Payne is serving as this year’s honorary chair. In its first two years the outing has raised over $39,000.
The Foundation annually provides significant support for quality initiatives beyond the scope of publicly funded education, including teacher and administrative grants, scholarships, and special wish list initiatives.
