Old-Fashioned Family Picnic

The public is invited to join the Oakwood Historical Society from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 15, for the annual Old-Fashioned Family Picnic on the grounds of the Long-Romspert Homestead, 1947 Far Hills Ave. Dinner will be served at 5:45 p.m. and features delicious broasted chicken, pulled pork BBQ, cole slaw, baked beans, fresh fruit and rolls all from K.D.’s Kettering BBQ. Cool drinks will also be provided with a cash bar for beer. Attendees are invited to bring a favorite dessert to share. Enjoy special displays, a 1908 Buick, tours of The Homestead or just sit back and visit with your fellow citizens on a summer evening.

Handicapped parking is available at The Homestead. Due to limited space, sidestreet parking is recommended or enjoy a walk to the picnic through Oakwood’s scenic neighborhoods.

Tickets are $11for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. Vacation Bible School at LCOS July 30-Aug. 3

Lutheran Church of Our Savior is offering a “net full of adventures at the Great Bible Reef” this summer, beginning on Monday, July 30 and continuing through Friday, Aug. 3. This Vacation Bible School is for everyone between the ages 0 to 100.

Participants at the Great Bible Reef will hear stories about Jesus, make cool crafts, learn catchy reef tunes, play super-fun games, do some zany skits, and make lots of new friends. Each day offers a new Bible story to explore. Dinner will be provided each evening at 5:30 for the whole family followed by activities from 6 to 8:15 p.m. Lutheran Church of Our Savior is located at 155 E. Summer IMAX schedule at Air Force Museum

Children and adults of all ages will enjoy the IMAX Theatre features this summer at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. From July through Sept. 3, the IMAX Theatre will operate on its summer schedule, offering a variety of films during the day including: Roving Mars, Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag and Straight Up! MOMs offer Relay for Life drawing contest

The MOMs Group of Oakwood is offering children ages two and up the chance to enter its MOMs Relay for Life Team drawing contest. All entries will be displayed at the MOMs campsite at Mack Hummon Field on July 13-14 during the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Oakwood.

The theme for the contest is “Hope Lights the Way.” Judging will take place Friday, July 13 during the Relay for Life event. Prizes will be awarded in three age categories. Winners will be notified and prizes can be picked up at the MOMs team tent.

St. Paul’s offers summer programs 

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Oakwood. has a busy summer planned, and the entire community is invited to take part! New this year, St. Paul’s will offer education for all ages at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings throughout the summer months. Children in Preschool through Grade 6 will meet in the Activity Room to read “Adventures with the People of God,” great stories from the Hebrew scriptures. Youth in Grades 7-12 will meet in the PaulPit to discuss events in the news, and how they relate to the Bible. Adults will meet in the Parish Hall to take part in St. Paul’s Summer Sundays, an informal exploration of the Scripture readings of the day.

At 10:30 a.m., children in Kindergarten-Grade 4 are invited to Children’s Chapel, held in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.  While adults and youth attend the regular church service, the younger children conduct their own service, which parallels the Liturgy of the Word taking place in the Sanctuary.

Worship services are held Sunday mornings at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., and on Wednesday mornings at 9:15 a.m.  Following the Wednesday morning service, everyone is welcome to meet in the Parish Library for prayer and scripture study at 10 a.m.

All children in Preschool through Grade 4 are invited to attend St. Paul’s Vacation Bible School.  “Lift-Off:

Soaring to New Heights with God!” will take place Sunday, July 22, through Thursday, July 26. We will meet from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. for dinner, Bible Stories, Crafts, Games, and lots of Fun!

Remodeling seminar July 23

A remodeling seminar will be held at Wright Library, 1776 Far Hills Ave. on Monday, July 23 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The program wll give tips on how to reduce the stress of home remodeling projects. The topics covered will be planning, finding and choosing a contractor, accepting bids, and getting the job done.

The program is sponsored by the Miami Valley Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and will be presented by Gary A. Porter, a Certified Remodeler and Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler. This program is free and will be held in the library meeting room. Advance registration is necessary. Whodunit @ Wright Library thru Aug. 5

Why should kids have all the fun?  This summer Wright Library will sponsor a reading club for adults, ages 18 and up.  The theme is “Whodunit@WrightLibrary,” which will complement the children’s reading club theme, “Get a Clue @ Your Library.”  The program will run June 9 through August 5.

To participate, just visit Wright Library and check out a book.  No advance registration is required. Participants can enter weekly prize drawings for each Wright Memorial Public Library book they read, or audio book they listen to.  They can also enter for reading or listening to the digital books available on the library’s web site. The “grand” prize will be awarded on August 5.  Entry forms for all prizes are available at the library.  To enter you must be at least 18 years of age.  Books must be checked out from Wright Library.  There is a limit of one entry per title per person.  

In conjunction with the Adult Summer Reading Club, the Library will host MysteryMatinee@WrightLibrary on two Sunday afternoons during the summer: July 22 – The Big Clock (1948); and August 5 – Witness for the Prosecution (1957).  The movies will be shown in the Library’s meeting room at 2 p.m.  Popcorn and drinks will be provided.  The Adult Summer Reading Club grand prize winner will be announced at the August 5th movie matinee.

Wright Library offers Teen Reading Club

Area teens in grades 6-12 are invited to YNK @ Your Library this summer by participating in Wright Library’s teen summer reading club through August 10. Teens may register to read for prizes as well as to take part in spe
cial events offered throughout the summer, including teen detective movies at the Crime Capers Cinema, Dance Dance Revolution, and Drop-Ins featuring mystery and forensic activities.

Super sleuths and daring detectives, preschool through grade five, are invited to join Get a Clue @ Your Library at Wright Library this summer. Registration is being accepted for OCC Youth Soccer. Boys and Girls entering grades 1-6 are encouraged to enroll. This is a recreational league, with an emphasis on skills and fun. Volunteer coaches are needed for all divisions. Registration ends Sunday, August 12

 Join Miss Pat for a Summer Special of Art, Music, & Me. Ice Cream Sun Day, for children ages 3-5. Children will play theme related games, stories, music, and a craft. Friday, July 20, 9:30-10:30, space is limited to 12 children.

Doll Making 101

Using moldable clay, polymer wire, fabric, and other assorted materials, students will create a standing doll that can range from serious to silly. Doll Making 101 is taught by Peter A. Berwald, who has been making and teaching doll-making for 12 years. Dolls are great projects for housewarming gifts, weddings, or as portfolio builder for budding artists. National Aviation Hall of Fame to induct 5

The National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) announced that actor and pilot, Michael Dorn, will serve as the Master-of-Ceremonies for the its 46th Annual Enshrinement Dinner & Ceremony in Dayton, Ohio, on July 21, 2007.

Mr. Dorn will lead the prestigious induction ceremony, widely referred to as “America’s Oscar Night of Aviation,” where five more American pioneers of flight are to be honored for their contributions to aviation. They will join the roster of 190 men and women previously so honored by the NAHF.

The Class of 2007 is: Walter J. Boyne, former Director of the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum, aviation historian and best-selling author; Steve Fossett, globetrotting adventurer who holds numerous world records in balloons, gliders and powered aircraft; Evelyn Bryan Johnson, a flight instructor who has logged more flight hours, trained more pilots, and given more FAA exams than any other pilot; Sally K. Ride, America’s first woman in space aboard NASA’s STS-7 Shuttle mission; and Frederick W. Smith, a former USMC combat pilot and innovative founder of FedEx Corporation.  All five will attend to personally accept their honor.

His acting career includes appearances on TV series such as ChiPs and, most notably, on multiple STAR TREK series and five of the big screen versions of the same.  In addition to acting, Mr. Dorn provides voiceover work for a number of animated productions and video games. He recently narrated the acclaimed PBS-TV documentary, RED TAIL REBORN, about the Tuskegee Airmen and an effort by a group to honor them by rebuilding and flying again a restored WWII-vintage P-51C Mustang that crashed in 2004.

Among a number of previous enshrinees expected to attend are astronaut Joe Engle, aerobatic legend Patty Wagstaff, test pilots Fitz Fulton and Joe Kittinger, Experimental Aircraft Association founder Paul Poberezny, and designer and record-setter Dick Rutan.

Butterfly House at Cox now open

The Butterfly House at Cox Arboretum MetroPark allows visitors to see native butterflies and moths in all stages of metamorphosis. The Butterfly House opens for the season and will remain open until Labor Day .. Hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Noon-4 p.m. Entrance to the park and the Butterfly House is free.  

The Butterfly House at Cox Arboretum is the only one in Ohio featuring species native to the region such as the Painted Lady, Red Admiral, Monarch, Viceroy, Wood Nymph, Silver Spotted Skipper,
Giant Swallowtail, Black Swallowtail, Spicebush Swallowtail, Tiger Swallowtail, Luna Moth, Cecropia Moth, Polyphemus Moth, Pipevine Swallowtail and Buckeye. Visitors can guide themselves through the Butterfly House or take advantage of the expertise of our volunteers. Visitors also receive educational brochures which track the lifecycle and habitat of native butterflies and moths and describe butterfly garden plants. Student tours are for grades kindergarten and up, last 45 minutes and must be scheduled ahead by calling 937-434-9005.
