'Willow Grove'

The U.S. of A. had a big birthday party at Moraine Country Club last Wednesday evening. The back terrace was filled with red-white-‘n-blue costumes on the ladies and gents. Gloria Gardner was all-over red, white ‘n blue. One lady wore a navy T-shirt emblazoned with: “July 4th.Com” in sequins. “I made this years ago for one of Evelyn & Bill Lambert’s annual Fourth of July parties,” she told the Frank Zornigers. Bob Kegerreis asked: “What will I get if I punch in that address on my computer?” “Me!” was the answer.

Elly Butt was there with son David. “Saw your daughter, Barb Thomas at the TRI party last Saturday.” And another horse-lady was there…”do you remember me? I’m Patty Skilken…used to hunt with you years ago…” Followed by alotta “…you haven’t changed a bit…”

Bob Margolis, brother Jack Margolis & Audrey, Carol Levitan, Betsy Stavnitski, Bob & Kay Tormey, and Pat & Pam Carroll all added to the fun evening.

Cathy Beiser Black was ‘sporting’ a cane. “Hadda hip replacement,” was her excuse. “Come over to our table and see Courtney.” Courtney and her son and daughter were spending a week with Cathy and a great visit/reunion ensued. “I’m involved with the TRI riding program in Wyoming,” said Courtney. “I’m really enjoying it…” Everyone tried to make arrangements for Courtney to meet Betty Lou Townley, Dir. of TRI, and for Courtney to see Brentwood Riding Arena…but, alas everyone ran out of time. “Well do it on my next visit,” was the promise.

Aileen & Bud Welch were entertaining Nancy & Tom Gillaugh in honor of their recent nuptials. Seemed as though everyone came over to offer ‘best wishes.’ Nancy’s daughter, Liz Hardy, and her husband Rick Omler, came over from their group – to chat. Rick & Liz live in ‘The Castle’ on East Schantz. It’s one of Oakwood’s most famous and unique houses. Nancy persuaded Rick to tell her group about his exciting plans for the next several weeks. “Well, I’ve joined a group of eighteen who will bicycle along six hundred miles of the ‘Tour de France.’ Our accommodations are all arranged. Each morning we will start before the actual racers and then we stop after several hours for the Tour to pass. Then we ride on behind the official group to our next night’s stop. We will bike six hundred miles in six days. The entire race is 2,218 miles, Liz will meet me in Paris at the end of the race.”

After Rick and Liz had left the table, Nancy added: “Rick is CEO of WSI in Yellow Springs and he bicycles from his house on Schantz along the Bike Way to his office in Yellow Springs every morning!”

Ducky McGinnis, Oakwood High School grad, is visiting her Mother, Weezie. Ducky’s brother and sister-in-law, Carlo & Pam, had a ‘do’ for their friends on Wed. evening – the 4th. It was multi-generational – which makes for the best mix and most fun.

And another multi-generational gala was at Ginny Whalen’s on Ridgeway in honor of son Michael & Susan’s visit from Florida. Two of Mike’s children were with them plus each son had a friend and/or cousin with them. Cathy Whalen Kavanaugh & Tom had two of their children there – John & Ashley. Ashley was persuaded to tell her mother’s friends about her Olympic Trials experience on the two-woman-bob-sled event at Lake Placid! “We raced twice…first race we won and the in the second race we were third…we were going over eighty miles per hour…it’s terrifying…I was in back and was the brakeman!”

Bill & Susan Ferneding were there. Also Connie Breen, Wise Glossinger, and Bob Margolis….
