All-Stars trophy at Springfield

The Patterson Park American All-Star team won the local Springfield Tournament (eight teams in double elimination play). Haviland nets ITA semi-final

Oakwood High School Senior Kelsey Haviland completed her first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Tournament this past weekend at the Ohio State University.  Five high schoolers were entered in the draw of 64. Kelsey (12th seed) and Stephanie Danesis (Revere HS, Akron, OH) were the only high school players to advance in the tournament. Kelsey won 6-0, 6-0 in the 1st round against Jamie Oppenlander, Grand Valley State. The second round Haviland won 6-0, 6-2 against Stephanie Kurti of Mary Washington University, advancing to the third round Haviland faced off against the number seven seed Kristy Borza the number one player for University of Pittsburg  defeating her 6-3, 7-5.

In the quarter finals, Kelsey met up with number four seed, Ohio State player (Big 10 Conference player of the week), Christina Keesey. Haviland defeated Keesey in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.  Making it to the semi-finals were Elizabeth Lumpkin, UCLA, Kellie Schmitt, Marshall University, Kelsey Haviland, Oakwood High School and Neela Vaez, Purdue University.  Haviland fell to number five seed, Purdue’s Neela Vaez in a closely contested match 7-6, 6-4.

In August, Kelsey will travel to San Francisco, CA to compete in the Girls 18’s USTA National Championships at the University of California, Berkeley.
