Soccer Jacks go 2-2 in preseason tourney

Last year, Oakwood won medals for second place in the District Championship. Twelve seniors graduated, including seven starters, but returning lettermen include seniors Simon Gifford, John Harman, Brian Telek, and Addison Wille, juniors Andrew Morris and Tristan Schnader, and sophomore Scott Harman.

On July 21-22, the Jacks played a four game tournament at Greenview HS, facing Bishop Fenwick (2006 record 7-10-1) in the first game. The first half was a midfield battle, but eventually the Jacks took control of midfield through work by Schnader and sophomores Zach Rodabaugh, Marcel Georgin and Liam Jackson. The midfield fed forwards Morris and junior Philip Wille for a number of quality shots. Finally, Schnader threaded a pass to Philip Wille who found junior Zach Hood for the hard shot at 12 yards. Because of its power, the Fenwick goalie barely knocked it away, and it fell to Morris who slid the ball into the yawning net at 5 yards. The second half found Fenwick’s runs at goal stopped by the defensive wall of Telek, Gifford, Hood and senior Kyle Rieger. Gifford pressured the Fenwick strikers and made several steals. Fenwick managed few quality shots, one blast from the top of the box which goalie Scott Harman saved, lunging outstretched into the upper right corner for the block. Oakwood broke quickly. Schnader chipped 20 yards over the Fenwick defense to feed the onrushing Wille. As the Fenwick keeper came out, Wille slipped the ball to sophomore Tim Fecher who shot past the post. Next, Wille charged solo down the wing, weaving through the defense, netting the shot on the ground. Minutes later, Rodabaugh found Morris who fed Wille, who completed his brace by netting again. It was a 3-0 shutout for the Jacks, who had more quality shots and outshot Fenwick 19-18. Harman had 6 saves.

The 2nd game was against a strong Yellow Springs team who outshot the Jacks 32-6. Four of the shots came from Schnader in midfield as the Jacks had trouble breaching the Springs’ defense for closer shots. Brilliant moments included sliding tackles by John Harman, one of which surgically stole the ball from an amazed Springs striker and another crunching slide which blocked a point blank shot on the Oakwood goal. Telek was a rock that Springs could not penetrate, and junior Garrett Luther was hard nosed on defense as well, but it wasn’t enough as Oakwood fell 4-0. Scott Harman had 8 saves.

Oakwood next played Springfield Catholic who beat the Jacks in the 2006 District Finals. Like Yellow Springs, they had lost only one or two seniors. Oakwood’s best chances came early in the second half. At nine minutes, Schnader sent a long cross which bounced off a defender to Morris who lined a goal from the eighteen. Minutes later, Rodabaugh drew a foul 35 yards out, and Schnader took the kick which Addison Wille skimmed with his head. The ball landed for Morris who drilled it one foot wide of the far post. Although Oakwood outshot Catholic 15-14, Catholic won 5-1, scoring once on a PK and once on an unavoidable, freakish own goal. Harman had 4 saves.

A tired Jacks’ team faced West Liberty Salem in their 4th, but possibly best game. At 15 minutes, Addison Wille fed Schnader in midfield who threaded the 25 yard pass on the ground between two defenders. Morris, on the run and sandwiched between the defenders, snagged the pass and maintained possession to drill the hard ground shot into the netting. Two minutes later, Schnader made a tearing run across midfield and passed to Philip Wille. Wille one-touched back to Schnader, who found sophomore Liam Jackson, who shot past the keeper for the score. An Oakwood defensive mix-up allowed West Liberty to score, but the Jacks roared back with a drive by Morris who found Jackson who shot. The ball fell to Schnader at 18 yards who blasted it into the far side netting for the Jacks’ third goal.

The second half saw the Jacks’ new defense starting to gel, lead by Telek and Gifford, with strong performances from Hood, Luther and Rieger. Telek’s free kicks were putting pressure on opposing teams throughout the tournament, and he also started Oakwood counterattacks. At 8 minutes, he sent a long pass to junior Jake Basnett who found Addison Wille on the run. Wille lofted a 35 yard precision pass to Morris for the thundering shot. West Liberty then countered, cutting into the Jacks’ defense for the point blank shot at 6 yards. However, Scott Harman made the amazing reflex save, one handed. But the rebound fell to a West Liberty player for the tap-in score. The Jacks countered with Basnett finding Addision Wille who sliced his way through several defenders and into the box where the keeper came out and upended Wille with his arms. No card was given to the goalie, but Wille then scored from the spot.

Although West Liberty outshot the Jacks 16-14, Oakwood’s shots had greater quality, insuring the 4-2 win. Harman made 7 saves, including a total of three one-handed lunging finger tip saves at full stretch.
