Jim & Midge Harlan called to say daughter, Stevie, would be in town this week – with her two children, Laura & Andy. Stevie graduated from Oakwood High School in the ‘70’s. Her big interest then (and now) was horses. And Stevie and her best friend, Annie Wagner, both hunted with the Miami Valley Hunt and boarded their horses at Ginny & Herb Whalen’s beautiful ‘Locust Wood Farm’ on Penewit Road. After college Stevie lived in Alaska for a number of years and now lives on Vashon Island off the coast of Washington between Tacoma and Seattle.
“Vashon has a population of about seven thousand. The kids went to grade school to a private academy we helped establish. Then high school was on the mainland. When I was showing the horses I had to transport them in my trailer, via the ferry boats….now the traffic has gotten so heavy on the commercial ferries we mostly use our own boat…”
“Laura is now in pre-Vet school in Colorado and Andy has just finished his Freshman year at Palo Alto. He’s into Cross-Country Track and so enjoyed meeting Walter Schaller at Dayton Country Club on Saturday evening. When Andy heard about Walter’s track-shoe project of sending used running shoes to Africa, Andy promised to send “…alotta pairs to Walter…I get about five hundred miles per pair…”
Stevie is getting together, on Sunday evening, with several old friends from high school days – Kathy Whalen Kavanaugh, and Hank Hull. “I’m so sorry Annie Wagner, DVM, is not here…but I did get to see her mother, Eloise,” said Stevie. Barbara Butt Thomas was involved with a picnic of her own so she and her daughter, Laura, had to ‘regret’. Laura Thomas, Ellie Butt’s grand daughter, is soon leaving for Washington, DC for an internship with a Washington newspaper. “Then it’s back to Miami Univ. to finish her Senior year,” added Barb.
Barb, of course, is still ‘into’ horses. “I’ve got six brood mares on the farm and a filly in training in Lexington. Didn’t you enjoy the TRI fund raiser at Susan & John Berry’s several weeks ago…it was great to see you…”

Irv Beiser called about a meeting on August 22nd to gain input about the 3 ? acres on the West side of Houk Stream. As you’ve read, the City of Oakwood has purchased this tract adjacent to the existing park running along the East side of the Stream. It will be a gift to the City to honor our centennial in 2008. All of the landowners in this area are delighted with the decision.

Dale Huffman devoted a column last week – to Maggie Fitzgibbons. Maggie was long-time ‘Woman’s Editor’ of the Dayton Daily News, and a great and cherished friend to all she knew. The photo carried with the ‘copy’ depicted Maggie and her friend Russ Guerra, Dayton Police Officer, & Detective, taken in l963 – with snow blowing horizontally across their faces.
Two great friends of Maggie’s were mentioned – Jeff Rose, a retired Mead Corp. executive, and neighbor, and Winnie Fiedler. And Dale quoted: “Colleague Phyllis Fraser Hull’s testimonial to Maggie when she retired from the News…”

A small group of friends and family gathered on Sunday at the home of Mike Houser and Steve Wargo to celebrate the engagement of Laura Norwalk to Gregory Bendelius. Laura, the daughter of Tom Norwalk of Devereaux Road, lives in New York City where she is a Worth fashion consultant. Her fiancé, also a New Yorker, works for Unisys. Among the celebrants were Greg’s mother, father and brother, who had flown in from New Jersey. Leslie Norwalk, Laura’s sister, arrived from Washington D. C. to add her congratulations. Leslie has just recently resigned as Acting Administrator, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. She is an attorney with Epstein Becker & Green, a prominent Washington law firm. Both Norwalk girls are Oakwood High School graduates. A May wedding is planned.
