Louis Lott's tribute to
Frank Lloyd Wright

Whispers Home seeking donations for charity

Whispers Home is rewarding women for helping other women.  In its second annual Sharing Support event, the Oakwood boutique is collecting gently-used bras to donate to Clothes that Work, a local charitable organization that provides work-appropriate clothing to individuals seeking employment.  In exchange for each bra donated, customers receive 30 percent off a new bra.

The Sharing Support event runs through Aug. 31.

Last year, nearly 300 bras were collected for Clothes That Work.  Whispers’ owner, Judy Wyatt, was delighted with the response and decided to make it a yearly event. “We’re fortunate to have such a generous community,” says Wyatt. “The Sharing Support event allows women the satisfaction of knowing their donated bras will – both literally and figuratively – provide support to others.”  Customers tell us they really appreciate the savings; however they enjoy the opportunity to help such a great organization even more.

When women bring their bra donations to Whispers and redeem their discount, they can also choose to take advantage of the shop’s free bra-fitting service.  Although a properly-fitted bra is important to a woman’s appearance, posture, and comfort, it’s been estimated that close to 70 percent of women wear the wrong size.

“We hear a lot of complaints about bras being uncomfortable. When properly fit, though, a bra should be both supportive and comfortable; that’s why we work with each customer to find her best solution,” Wyatt said. Whispers Home offers bras and briefs from manufacturers such as Chantelle, Wacoal, Simone Perele, Le Mystere, Hanky Panky, Prima Donna, Elle Macpherson, Huit, Princesse Tam Tam, and Hanro, in sizes ranging from 30 to 44 and AA to H.

In addition Whispers offers fine linens from Yves Delorme and Natori Home and sleepwear and loungewear from brands including Natori, Hanro, Feraud, Christine Vancouver, Scanty, Cosabella, Hanky Panky, Claire Pettibone and Vera Wang.

Whispers Home is located in the Shops of Oakwood at 2426 Far Hills Avenue and is open Monday through Friday 10-6 and Saturday 10-4.

Free program offered to cancer survivors

The Noble Circle Project for Women Surviving Cancer, a wellness program which benefits women in Dayton and the surrounding areas who have been diagnosed with cancer, will launch its fall program in September, 2007.

Eight Dayton area women, who initiated the project in 2003, had a desire to encourage other women with cancer to take an active role in improving their health and recovery. The goal of the program is to provide cancer survivors with the tools necessary to achieve significant gains in their health using a simple, natural approach.

Women may join the program at any point in their journey with the disease.

As a program of the Wellness Connection of the Dayton Region, the project focuses on complementary healing methods that can be used in conjunction with traditional medical treatment. Participants will engage in whole foods nutrition classes including cooking demonstrations, address the emotional issues related to cancer through a network of support, and experience the stress-reducing effects of practicing a form of gentle exercise and healing movement called qigong.

The fall program of The Noble Circle Project will kick-off with a weekend retreat Sept. 14-16 followed by 10 weeks of Thursday evening classes which will be  held at One Lincoln Park in Kettering.

The program is open   to women diagnosed with any type of cancer. The program is free to participants and enrollment is limited. Registrations will be accepted until Aug. 29.

For more information, call 937-885-4477, 937-434-9382, or go to www.noblecircle.org.

Deer expert to speak at OCC Aug. 23

Anthony Marr, international wildlife preservationist and founder of HEAL OUR PLANET EARTH (www.HOPE-CARE.org) will speak on the issue of urban deer management, Thursday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Oakwood Community Center.

The mass slaughter of urban and suburban deer is spreading like wild fire across the nation.  The Oakwood area is no exception.  Marr says that the three usual methods of killing urban deer - sharp shooting, bow hunting, and trap-and-bolt - are inhumane and ineffective.

“Few civilized people want to see deer and fawns killed by captive-bolts, bullets or arrows right in a neighbor’s backyard in full view of their traumatized children, but they shrug in resignation because they have been indoctrinated to accept killing as an indispensable solution to deer problems, Mars said.”I’m championing an alternative solution which is non-lethal, more effective, less expensive and is a very efficacious method that is 100 percent effective over three years or more.”

Marr will present the new Non-Violent Integrated Human-Deer Co-existence Strategy, based on various non-lethal control methods, including the newest one-dose-multi-year immunocontraception technologies, due for general certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as early as 2008.

The local animal rights/protection organization People/Animals Network is sponsoring Marr’s appearance in the lower level meeting room at the Oakwood Community Center.
