Former Oakwood resident now Unitarian minister

Twelve years ago, when Amy MacMillan lost her 45 year old husband to cancer, she was extremely grateful to the members of her church, Miami Valley Unitarian Fellowship, for their love and support.  This experience led her to a decision to train for the ministry. A ministry that has proven successful so far—the membership of her previous church in the Washington D.C. area more than doubled in her time there.

The members of Miami Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship recently completed an almost two year process of searching for a minis ter. That search found Reverend Amy (MacMillan) Russell and brings her back to her religious roots. “I’m glad to be back in the Dayton area where I have so many fond memories” Amy says.

Reverend Russell, who spent 14 years at NCR in counseling and training, graduated from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Her first service with Miami Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship was  Aug. 19 with an Oct. 21 installation date.

Oakwood icon pens 3rd of trilogy

Growing Up In Dayton is the third of three tomes from the bright and creative mind of John K. (Jack) Matthews, Jr. Carrying with it an autobiographical twist, the book depicts the many experiences, opportunities and adventures afforded Mr. Matthews over eight decades of creative thought. Matthews anecdotes are accompanied by many pictures that commemorate a lifetime of deeply felt memories as well as documents such as letters home from college and other desiridata kept within the family archives.

The only son of John and Dorothy Matthews,  his family moved to Oakwood in 1943 and he has stayed ever since. He quipped that Oakwood had a tony, high-falutin’ reputation even back then. “You’re moving out to Snob Hill,” one of his friends said to him.

The book was preceded by his two previous efforts, Giving Something Back and Son of Giving Something Back. All three books are in stock at the Oakwood Register office, 435 Patterson Rd., and are available in exchange for a monetary contribution to the Dayton Foundation.

Fundy Duddy

HIding behind the pages of the Oakwood Register  is Jack Matthews, taken on his recent trip to the Bay of Fundy in Newfoundland. This photo just might mark the start of something new for the Register. Jack will receive two passes to the Neon Movies. Do the same (have picture taken in exotic locale with Register in tow) and your photo will be published in the Register and you, too, will receive Neon Movies passes.
